Does anyone else enjoy playing on really ridiculous maps? Obviously for competitive purposes, maps need to be as balanced as possible, but every now and then it's really fun to whip out some crazy-ass map and give it a spin. For example, not too long ago I took a UMS Battlecraft map, removed all the units and triggers, sprinkled minerals and gas throughout, placed 8 starting locations and called it a melee map. Playing on it was good times, even though some positions were disadvantaged; some start locations were on islands, or blocked off by mineral patches. The pathfinding was nightmarish, there was no room to build, and everything was in tank range of everything else --- but that was fine since we were playing TvT. It was a blast. Anyway, just something to think about if you ever get sick of playing on Python or whatever.
(PS: Looks like I don't have that map anymore, but the effect is pretty easy to recreate.)

EDIT: This is a pretty stupid thread so it might be happier in General, I dunno.
May the BeSt man win.

Why not just play that Seven Sins map. That was was hilariously awesome. IIRC someone actually owned a min patch >_> I'm not sure if we had to mine it to kill them or not.

I can beat any protoss on (8)Zerg Flyer Full

I think I could even bet money and play a BO5.

That's like the most imbalanced map ever, poor protoss cant even build a single probe : )

at first I thought you came up against one of those "1v1 obs" games on b.net. Where it's UMS and the creator gets 99999999999999999 gas and minerals. I came up against one guy doing that, and kind of figured something was wrong when he wall-d in completely when i scouted him first but surprisingly won the game. (what a noob).

There was a map that resembled the world- that was kind of cool to play.
The seven sins one is also pretty awesome.

We should hold a Blizzard Maps Challenge. Some of those maps are just insanely ridiculously poorly designed for modern play:

Hah! Power Lines made me laugh. Took me a while to figure out what was wrong with it, though.

Chain Lightning looks kinda cool if you ask me.

It'd be nice if people posted links to the maps like Grand did.

I think thats what it was designed for. It probably has a UMS setting, right?

Obviously in a FFA battle it would suck. Not much expo's either.

I think that'd be a fun game though. ^^

If your partner is Z and your P/T, that could kinda suck. Force him to build the opposite way, I guess? lol

Yeah! Unabalanced maps are great fun to play, I especially like maps where the starting locations are 'unbalanced/different' like one might have a ramp, another is wide open, one is an island, ect..makes for some really chaotic/creative play

@GI: good taste, 3/4 of your picks are my favs! (dont care for meltdown). I love playing zerg on trench wars, getting fast speedlings/burrow. Then hit the enemy from both sides of his base, burrowing/unborrowing as his units try to save their buildings, haha. So fun ;p

And three kinddoms is kinda what I was talking about with start locations, but I do like them even more unbalanced then that^^

(PS you forgot the map names for the last two ;p)

Crystallis was the best map ever xD

Wow, looking at some of these old maps, Power Lines especially, makes me remember the days when we would host 2v2 Blizzard games or FFA on Dark Continent. Those were good times

Terran can't lose on Crystallis...unless they play vs terran. I actually had an account that I only played 1v1s on that map.

No, technically the 12 is suppose to take the expansion right below them. There is a hunter, the original and that the 3 expo doesn't have a gas.

There are ways to make pictures. IIRC there is scm2jpg and also a program that adjusts your windows to change your right click menu... I have it somewhere but forget what it's called..

Good god, I remember playing a "FFA" on Three Kingdoms, it was a fucking ridiculous game.

I joined a pubbie FFA on this game, and randomed zerg. The other two guys were both Terran. I went fast lurks and sent them over to one dude's base, and was raping his shit when I realized that the two guys actually knew each other and were allied. What basically ensued was me killing both their mains with sauron/lurk and them heavily fortifying the bottom main with tanks/turrets. I used some choice words to describe their faggotry in making an FFA which was actually a 2v1, but they spoke some other language, forgot what it was.

So I built guardians to crack their final base, but I was pissed so after i destroyed all their units i just pulled back and sent only like 3 drones to kill all their supply depots. Fuckers drop-hacked me shortly after.

Crappy maps.

I've been playing Friends 98, Three Kingdoms and Meltdown A LOT with friends, honestly. Especially Three Kingdoms (since we were like 3 all the time, one Terran, one Zerg, and one Protoss. It was fun.)

I remember playing New Gettysberg, Triumvirate, Dire Straits, and Bone Canyon a lot. Bone Canyon was expecially good imo, probably one of the most balanced Blizzard-made maps.

I basically only play blizzard maps, to be honest. Some of them are actually pretty good, and fairly balanced. Some of them actually, even allow macro games. Not to the extent of say...Andromeda, but thats just a ridiculous map anyways. They have some nice variation, its great fun. You just have to find the right map!

when blizzard ladder was still around i remember having a ffa on winter conquest (or something like that?) and another island space map which was like 196x196 or 256x256. The winter one went just over 2 hours and the other game went close to 3:40 minutes TT

I won both lol, but God did it take a fucking long time.

ROFL! How the hell did yolu manage that?

The only thing I coudl guess is you turtled in quite well and they just gave up and left.

That would be great, though. I'd be laughing all day.

Raises another question, though: How the hell did you fall asleep during a SC game? O_O

I'm thinking it was a team game? perhaps a 7v1 cpu, or some sort of non-melee ums? Otherwise I can't see losing after you fall asleep even if you turtle really well. Since all noobs knows what breaks turtles (since noobs love to cannon and better people beat them with what outranges cannons.)

That said, how DO you fall asleep playing SC?

So fun with friends! What's especially fun is if you have an inhouse 4v4, and let you guys CHOOSE starting locations. Do you wanna split into parallel 2v2s? 3v1 and 3v1? Or all on the same side?

Actually my friends and I used to play a lot of large team games (5 to 8 players) and we exhausted hunters pretty quickly, so we moved onto a lot of the 6 and 8 player maps on panschk. It's a really good data base for playable melee maps.

He goes T and you either have to go P or Z or he leaves the game.
All his buildings and units were free and his marines did 9 damage instead of 6.
Also he was fucking awful lol , went mass valks as a counter to my carriers when he had 3/3 metal but i guess when you have free units it doesn't matter? lol

that blood bath map looks awesome
BB is good for a change of pace because it takes the expansion aspect out and strips sc down to it's basics

my fav blizzard maps.... challenger , triumvirate , bridge too near , dire and rivalry
i think they're pretty decent to be honest considering they probably rushed through them at the end of sc's development cycle
Once again back is the incredible!

I made only 20 tanks or so and the game was mine, I could play 1v7 vs them and still win rofl

I remember playing on that map too I think it was a 3v3 and I went Terran. One of my protoss opponents spawned next to me and once I had 2 tanks and a dropship he left :D

Twin bloodbath looks cool I have to try it later with some friends.

Some of the most fun games ive ever played have been all random 2v2 on random blizz maps (done the old school way of closing your eyes and picking out of a list randomly)

the fact that i suck horribly at t is negated by the often ridiculous imbalance on some maps.

honestly tho, with some balance tweaking, a lot of these maps would be kinda cool.

It's a really good data base for playable melee maps.

holy shit thats awesome

Oh my god. I love some of these maps so much. I remember massing scouts on primeval isles and owning all of my friends. I am officially the FFA and random map king in my group! We will play three kingdom FFA some times, and it is a very funny map to play on.

me: "lol i love mass siege tanks best strategy ever" (by mass at the time i meant like 10)

The problem with all these giant maps, is that you forget how small a 200/200 army is on them. You basically have to be Toss and using recall if you want to defend anything, and even then, that only saves you while your army is in transit, because recalling all your weakened units to defend a base generally spells death o.o

That said, I kind of want to FFA on one of these maps.

Hahaha

I remember when I was that bad. (Come to think of it, I'm not that much better then I was back then XD)

The early days of SC were so great....

"zerg: lol which one"
"me: wat"

"*your forces are under attack*
me: wat"

XD When did that word get so funny?

I remember enjoying "Baby Steps". Thats a pretty cool looking map

I've played this guy on west a couple of times recently who did this on a rigged version of Luna.
He goes T and you either have to go P or Z or he leaves the game.
All his buildings and units were free and his marines did 9 damage instead of 6.
Also he was fucking awful lol , went mass valks as a counter to my carriers when he had 3/3 metal but i guess when you have free units it doesn't matter? lol

I just played a game on Killing Fields. I won't bother with an image but just imagine a 256x256 8-player land map with expos all over the place. This was a "1v1 Noobs" game. (I'm a noob, having switched fairly recently from UMS.)

me: wow, never played this map
DeluxeNoobie: yeah i don't like getting rushed

I went CC first since I figured I was in no immediate danger, and proceeded to send out about 3 scouting SCV's and a floating barracks in an attempt to understand the geography and find my opponent. It turned out that he'd started in the position adjacent to mine. With my double gas I managed to produce a good-sized army of gols and tanks (he was massing wraiths) and a couple dropships and plunked my whole army on the high ground separating our mains.

DeluxeNoobie: you're not a noobie
me: am so
DeluxeNoobie: no you're a noobie hunter
DeluxeNoobie: you have maphack on
DeluxeNoobie: you can see the whole map
[at this point I had 5 goliaths, 3 wraiths, a barracks and an engineering bay scouting around the map; but it didn't matter because he hadn't even expanded.]

me: no i am a noob also
me: just less of a noob than you
DeluxeNoobie: fuck you noobie rapist
DeluxeNoobie: i am going to put you on my whore list

Then he nuked one of my 5 expansions and disconnected.

haha. 3 kingdoms looks horrendously imbalanced with advantage for Terran in TvP. and the map where it's hard to secure your third, i think was actually the very first map that i ever played online in multiplayer. me and some friends were at a chess tournament, and between games, there were some computers that had sc installed, so we were playing. haha, i was so noob back then.

Hahahaha, in 2000 or something, i played with a old friend in this map.(he's still playing actually.) And i get 2 gas, harrassed with 4-5 mutalisks (microing like mad, i had 3k mins and 2k gas),he made a lot of bunkers, then i teched to guardians and owned him. And our opinion that, mutalisks are imba in island maps.

A fun one for playing with friends that hasn't been mentioned is Hidden Shrine. Pretty nice little 6 player map for rushing and stuff. 6 players on it is a little much, but it's good for 2v2s.

I stumbled on a group of 6 people starting up a game, and asked if I could join. Thought I was pretty decent, so they put me on the team with their local "gosu," against the other 5. Wound up something like TTvZTTPP I think, with a decent number of randoms in there. As it turned out, the good player was ~150 APM and followed the pro scene, I was like ~70 APM with some game knowledge at the time, and the rest were 40 APM noobs. After about 8 minutes and 2 tank drops, it was 2v3. I got in a harassment fight with one of the remaining three (who was the best player of the other five), while my ally took about 5 bases and massed BCs, and we steamrolled them.

For 6+ player mayhem, Homeworld, Tribes, and Theatre of War are other fun ones we used a lot.

We should hold a Blizzard Maps Challenge. Some of those maps are just insanely ridiculously poorly designed for modern play:

Yeah that would be great fun!

(show matches with some top TSL players on goofy maps could be cool too?)

Any ideas on Terran strategy?

This is advice from someone rather shitty but who has a lot experience playing Terran in LANs against randoms that are completely shitty players and don't follow progaming:

Lakeshore has cliffable mineral lines at the mains. You don't even need dropships.

Lay mines on the ramp exit from the base or wall it in somehow, and get siege tanks on top of the cliff over the mineral line. If this is a local tournament this will probably work wonders against newer players, they won't even see it coming.
Now, I'm not sure how this'll work against someone like an ICCUP D or something. Probably not that well.

On Hot Zone if your opponent in the bottom right, dropships will be able to put tanks in places where they can attack some enemy buildings.

If your opponent has drop tech in either case, support your tanks with golis/mnms stationed around them.

Use the foothold given by cliffed tanks to drop tanks further inside the bases.

On both maps, set up tank contains, lower level players don't know how to break them very well and they just turtle up and mass battlecruisers or something stupid like that. Keep scanning them. If they start getting carriers or bcs then just go for Flash-esque mass goliaths and 3/3 upgrades on them. If they mass guardians go for mass science vessels, SK-Terran and irradiate/stimrine them to death.

During the contain expand expand expand. Newer players on local LAN events like that don't know how to deal with expansions like that. And when they expand just be like lol@u and run in 4 vultures (or marines in tvz) or cliff the expo with tanks.

Also: Don't fast expo. Expect cheese. If it's a zerg player, chances are he's heard of the dreaded "zerg rush" sometime in 1998 and maybe he even used it from time to time on oldschool blizz ladder games. Proxy builds will be unlikely however. Laugh when they wonder "zerglings must have been nerfed or something".

incredibly epic FFA on sharewood forest
replay 1.10 here: http://download.yousendit.com/FCCA80C8797440A3

5 players from blizzforums, noone knowing the map and the game to be frank

I executed a not so fast muta opening + ling attacks (without upgrades of course)
One of the terrans made few vultures and then proceeded to 1 base battlecruisers.
One protoss went mass arbiters and the other mass reaver/corsair/carrier.
The zerg went mass sunken and spores with hydras.

Guess who won (I was the 2nd ^^).

I have returned

Oh well the tournament was yesterday anyways, and it was an online tournament. I didn't last long anyways. We didn't end up using Lake Shore, but we did use another map called "Death Valley." It was pretty ridiculous. The lower left spot mined slower than usual because the SCV's took retarded paths. Actually, I lost on that map because when I made a supply at 8, my SCV got stuck behind Mineral blocks, a supply depot, and a doodad which I did not see. Then the opponent sent masslings :/

On Hot Zone, I basically threw the game away. My opponent double expoed at beginning, so I sent a force and destroyed one. I comsatted his main and I thought I could sunk break (but I didn't ). If I had even stepped a little to the left before his main I would have seen his other expo (undefended) with his spire there, and that probably would have given me the victory. Regardless, I suck against Lurkers and it only took 5 to take me down :/

By the way, you really do need dropships on Lake Shore. That picture does not go into enough detail as to how MASSIVE that map really is. There are so many turns and tiny ramps everywhere. I think it would take roughly 2-3 minutes to get your army to your opponent's base if they were cross positions.

So are we gonna do the Random Blizz Map, Random Race, FFA/TM/etc. Tourny, or at least some games?

I'd TOTALLY be up for it.
