Hey TL! I'm Pr0nogo, lead designer of Cosmonarchy Brood War, a vast and ambitious conversion that does something very different with Starcraft 1. I feel like we're at the stage where our game state, balance, and map designs could benefit from being exposed to the enthusiast crowd here, so I'm interested in your guys' feedback on the project!
It's with that in mind that I'll be posting "castover" videos, where I commentate replays between some of our players. The skill level varies pretty wildly, so I'll post a short summary with each link. Hopefully these sorts of videos will help get people familiar enough with the project to share their impressions - and if you have any input on my casting/observing, feel free to share that as well!
26 October '23: Hamster vs neblime - ZvT, 2 games Here's a ZvT between Hamster, a relative newcomer with some decent RTS chops, and neblime, finalist of our previous tournament and potentially on track to win the current one! It's got some pretty good back and forth and contains two matches on a new, work-in-progress map by community member Btyb88.
I'll post more videos as they come out, but you can always check the castover playlist to see videos from before this post!
Cheers!

That's awesome. Love to see it. Thank you.

Thanks G5!
27 October '23 DeadInfested vs 3crow - PvT, PvP, 5 games Today's commentary is of lower-level players DeadInfested (P) and 3crow (T, then P). 5 games of cheese and aggro plays! If you like seeing rusty/new players muck about, you'll like this cast.

This mod which from what I understand will be a separate game in future is really fun! More people should try it.

I'd enjoy seeing a new tileset *wink*.

In other news, we just concluded Ascension #5, and the grand finals was a banger! You guys should definitely check out the final match of the tournament - truly a battle to be remembered.

29 October '23 neblime vs The Shambler - TvP, 3 games I took a day off from castovers to cast the final three series of Ascension #5. Today's video brings a few matches that were played as practice for the grand finals, with The Shambler off-racing as Protoss to spar with neblime's Terran. There were lots of these matches submitted for casting, so enjoy the first three of them!
|
30 October '23 Hamster vs MoonHunter - PvT, 1 game A short one for today, but this cheese had to be immortalized with its own video. Two relative newcomers duke it out, with Hamster offracing as Protoss and MoonHunter deploying some never-before-seen proxy play!
|
31 October '23 neblime vs The Shambler - TvP, 3 games Part 2 of the grand finals practice matches between two of our top players! neblime continues to... pioneer...? bio play vs Gateway Protoss. A spooky affair indeed!

mmm, if you make a game out of this wouldnt a lawsuit follow? Even more after Blizzard changed their policy for games created in their editors, etc.?

When we release our own RTS games, we'll have made them in our own engine. Cosmonarchy BW is a prototype for what our own RTS games will look like in the future - since we'll have our own settings/IPs, assets, code, and etc, there's no chance for a lawsuit.
2 November '23 Hamster vs neblime - ZvT, 1 game Hamster and neblime lock horns again, this time on new competitive map Sideshow. This was a banger match where you get to see some of the later-stage tech, especially for Terran!
|
3 November '23 DeadInfested vs MoonHunter - PvT, 3 games These matches were tourney practice for both players, where DeadInfested tried to play more aggressively than his usual pattern, and MoonHunter tried to survive Gateway all-ins - interesting stuff ahead of Saturday's group stage!

Any particular rationale for renaming many of the units and buildings?
|
On November 04 2023 01:56 sophisticated wrote: Any particular rationale for renaming many of the units and buildings?
Yessir! The default names are a mixed bag, mostly surface-level descriptions of what the unit's combat role was. Not only do the new names have more character to them, they are also super useful for when you're comparing a given unit to its SC1 counterpart - I can explicate the differences between the Marine and the Maverick, or the Dragoon and the Dracadin, in a far easier manner now.
The Zerg names are a mouthful for most, but they do have internal consistency: -osk means production structure -ith means defense/utility structure -leth means support/utility unit -rokor means short-range unit -lisk means mid-range unit -thalor means long-range unit
I have heard from lots of people that it's not easy to parse the project due to the renames, so my commentary does try to work in the old names to help people identify what I'm talking about a bit more easily - but with time and familiarity, players figure things out.

7 November '23 neblime vs Hamster - TvZ - 4 games This cast spends a bit of time on narratives and upcoming Ascension playoffs, but there's plenty of action to be had between these players! They get a bit more decisive and aggressive in this video.

I DL'd CMBW recently and have a couple questions. 1: How do I get the comp to actually play against me? & 2: can I configure my own custom hotkeys?

You can open this in notepad. It's located in the release or prerelease folders. Thanks for checking it out!

Awesome, thanks! I was playing on BW maps. I've also enabled grid hotkeys, which 90% matches my SC:R keys (I even had remapped attack to E) - but had some specific setting like r for stim (since 1r2r3r is so much easier than z). Just don't want to screw with my BW instincts too much...
ALSO, while I have you, are there cheat codes like "black sheep wall" et al? Thanks again.

I definitely understand not wanting to screw with your BW instincts - though as pointed out in this crash course video, the micro especially is really different. Looking forward to hearing your impressions if you have any!
Cheat codes are gone, but if you want to see the map state, you can open the console with the tilde key (left of the 1 key on the home row), type "vis all" without the quote marks, and hit enter - this gives you vision of all players on the map. You can toggle it off with "vis all off".
GLHF!

8 November 2023 neblime vs Hamster - TvZ - 2 games Today, we finish off the seven-game set of these two players. It was a cool series with a little bit of everything - macro games, cheeses, and early aggression with constant trades. You'll get to see a good amount of early pressure in this video!

10 November '23 The Shambler vs neblime - ZvT - 3 games Some practice games from before the tournament, from two fairly-competitive players! The Shambler tries to hit his favored three-base timings, against some novel compositions from neblime, along with the classic Terran drop play we've all come to expect from him.

20 November '23 Hamster vs Veeq7 - RvR - 3 games We're back on new desert map Fata Morgana by Veeq7. The map's author duels Ascension #6 finalist Hamster, both playing as random. Lots of risky play, sometimes punished, and sometimes not!

This looks really cool but ultimately too overwhelming to understand all the units. I’ll have to wait to get into it until a campaign or tutorial is released, or maybe a video for each race with a unit-by-unit and building-by-building breakdown of strengths/weaknesses/roles.

We are working on educational material, for sure - it's a must-have for something like this. For now, the best way to learn is probably by fighting our souped-up AI.

29 November '23 The Shambler vs Newt - PvT - 3 games I've been busy casting loads of Ascension #7's Gauntlet Stage, the open qualifier into the tournament proper. Today I made time to catch up on some matches that were played earlier in the month, including this one between Newt - a new Terran player who has qualified to the Group Stage! - and The Shambler, a veteran player opting into his second-best race of Protoss.

i've watched some of these and i think there's a lot of really cool stuff going on here. i also really appreciate having another rts that's closely related to the wc2/bw/sc2 lineage when most rtses diverged quite significantly. i've worked on some multiplayer games and mods myself and i can really tell how much hard work you've put into not just building a game but also building a community around it. it's really not easy.
i wanted to say two things that i am certain other people have said to you and there's a fair chance you're sick of hearing them but i think is really necessary for me to say. 1) the 1.16 requirement is really hurting the reach of this game, 1.16 is such a pain in the ass to deal with and have on my computer and honestly for me personally this is the biggest thing that has kept me from installing it myself. and i know i'm not alone in that regard with BW mods in general. i am very aware solutions to this are very difficult. but i think you just gotta go for a solution to this anyway.
2) the unit names are confusing and it's enough to hurt the reach of your game. i'm serious. i'm not just saying that because they're different than bw. i've watched and played many rtses, many that have many units. including some mods for other rtses, that have many units, like say, total annihilation: escalation, and so on. and cosmonarchy is by far the most confusing in this regard. it's not even close.
your FAQ mentions that the bw unit names are only simple and descriptive but honestly it's been my opinion for years that this has been bw's *strength*. competitive games are very complex to learn and anything you can do to simplify things without harming the core gameplay does a lot. you also gotta keep in mind that this gets more difficult with how many different units you have, and you have a lot.
and also the names that have been chosen are obscure words with an unclear relationship to the gameplay. you have a few good ones like "trojan" but many of them just, like, what is a "harakan"? i understand you feel the names are an appeal to what is flavorful. but there's no emotional resonance in that name for me at all, and wiktionary says it's a finnish verb? or "fulcrum" is a word that i happen to know, but i don't understand how or why that actually should be something that i have to remember is a factory. and many people will simply not know that word. it adds a ton of cognitive load to trying to understand the game, and i don't think it's doing the things you seem to want it to be doing.
hearing you on commentary it's just like "the barathrums are fighting against the accusators on the high ground but he's gotta watch out for the rubicon that's about to pop out of his fragrant cogitator. but oh no! he built a lyrical miracle instead!". i tried to choose words that i don't think are any of your existing units in that sentence to drive home what i mean.
i hope that doesn't sound mean. i like a lot of what you're doing and i put the effort into writing this because i do think that. and i really hope cosmonarchy goes well and your life goes well.

On March 22 2024 22:30 quaristice wrote: i am very aware solutions to this are very difficult. but i think you just gotta go for a solution to this anyway. We are pretty close to dropping our updated launcher, which will automate the whole installation process of 1.16.1, Cosmonarchy, cncdraw, defender exceptions, and firewall rules. From there, you'll only have to set up the virtual VPN we use for vLAN games, and you'll be golden. We broadly agree that the installation process is too involved currently, so we are looking forward to deploying the new launcher!
On March 22 2024 22:30 quaristice wrote: the unit names are confusing and it's enough to hurt the reach of your game. i'm serious. That's okay with us! The complaints about core gameplay (e.g. techtree sizes) vastly outnumber the complaints about the names, believe it or not. At the end of the day, I have a vision, and I'm okay with leaving behind people who don't connect with that vision. When you try to be all things to all people, you end up like Stormgate.
On March 22 2024 22:30 quaristice wrote: your FAQ mentions that the bw unit names are only simple and descriptive but honestly it's been my opinion for years that this has been bw's *strength*. We can disagree there! I know the unit is never actually built in the game, but an anti-flagship gunboat being called "Scout" is a huge miss -- and if you know what a "Machine Shop" actually is, you start to wonder how that gives you access to artillery tanks... This comes back to vision, and mine is definitely different from Blizzard's, but also far more purposeful, whether players connect with it or not.

We're working on tutorials and other singleplayer content to help people learn things better, and it's pretty exciting to see them come to fruition! But even the tutorials emphasize that you must fail, in order to learn, in order to succeed. If every unit was named something uninspired like Scout or Charger or Ultralisk, you'd still end up having no idea what was going on for your first few matches, precisely because of the volume of techtree options we provide to players.
On March 22 2024 22:30 quaristice wrote: and also the names that have been chosen are obscure words with an unclear relationship to the gameplay. This is factually untrue -- one of the examples you gave is the Harakan, which is another spelling of Huracan, the Mayan god of storms and fire. All the Terran names are grounded within human history, mythology, religion, and vernacular.
The other races are aliens, and I think it's fine for them to be a bit harder to penetrate (or a lot, in the case of the Zerg). At the end of the day though, you have access to really easy shorthand (e.g. Zoryusthaleth becomes Zoryus), which short-circuits a lot of the issues.

Once a week or so, I get a negative comment about the unit names, but nobody's given up playing because they believed the names were wack. I think it grows on people, by and large, even if they're uncertain at the onset.
Cheers!

I took a quick look. I have two thoughts which could perhaps be useful for you.
1. I wonder if your project could introduce the FOURTH side to the battle: the "Infested". Not a race per se, but a mix of terran, zerg and infested-terrain units. If technically doable, i think it could be one neat feature.
2. You've mentioned you're working on a new tileset. Itself great news, this also perhaps brings an opportunity many would not see or underestimate: namely, for you to reap players' instinctive desire to see beautiful "living" landscapes. This is something which has the potential to "glue" your players to their screens for a long, _long_ time, if done right.
"Living" landscapes - are scenery and backgrounds which present much "life" (does not have to be animated - can be all static imagery). "Life" means just that - living beings (plants, animals). You see, humans are hardwired to enjoy being in a healthy, thriving natural environment - lush growth, ample green colors, plenty of small animals going around, etc. Humans, genetically, are hunter-gatherers, and RTS players are genetically humans like any other.
This simple thing was one of main, if somewhat "hidden", reasons to the stunning success of World of Warcraft: it featured many regions / areas with their distinct, sometimes extremely lush, "ecosystems". All sorts of trees, animals, small plants, etc. Even Warcraft 2, as early and simple-graphic as it is, is significantly "triggering" natural response of enjoying seeing "living, thriving" things in a player - in compare to titles it competes against, at the time of its release.
So if you'll be able to do it right, some vivid, mostly varios shades of green, "alien" yet "triggering built-in hunter-gatherer in humans" landscapes / tilesets - could improve CBW serious deal. Especially since original BW's tilesets are much lacking in this regard.
P.S. It can be difficult to do it right, though. There are some big-name games which tried to capitalize on this approach, but much failed. Perhaps most well known one - is "Civilization: Beyond Earth", with its clear major effort to create high quality tilesets which would feel alive and attractive, on this instinctive level - but it largely doesn't; somehow it's "not feeling alive" shades or blue and yellow being way frequently used, and overall "dimmed" feel for most of that game's biomes.
|
Hey FinsT! Thanks for your thoughts.
The fourth race is already planned and in early development, you can find its techtree page here: https://www.fraudsclub.com/cosmonarchy-bw/askosi.php
As for infestation, you can already infest any unit or structure using these two Zerg units: the Matraleth and the Akistrokor. More units with this feature will be added a bit later, especially for one of the factions (which are only available outside of melee play).
The new tileset we are working on is actually a Zerg-themed biome called "organ". So it'll present "life" alright - just not the kinds you were talking about... Adding more grass and such is pretty good though, and we've already done that to a bunch of the other tilesets, like putting jungle grass into desert.
Some good thoughts there to think about though, especially regarding the tileset stuff. Cheers!

Just thinking aloud, Pr0nogo. Seeing you're interested in it, couple more short ones, seeing that you're in the "early" stage of your new race development.
New race's name leaves much to be desired: three syllables is one too long (compare: "zerg", "'toss", "terran"), and it starts with "a", which would spawn "an" for saying things like "TvZ": "an AvZ", etc. And the name sounds kinda italian - weird feeling, just a bit; unless italians are supposed to actually exist in your game? :D Small things like this add up - or down.
New race's essense: i read you're making 'em cybernetic, but this overlaps with vanilla SC things like toss' cybernetic core, robotic bay and its units, dragoons, etc. Maybe your new race could be changed to be AI-based, instead? So that you wouldn't have two largely-cyborg races. Sure i don't know all the vanilla Starcraft lore, but probably there ain't no AI-based stuff in vanilla game.
Best of luck with further dev works! o7

I'm not worried about any of this, since people are always gonna bristle up when something new is injected into something familiar. Blizzard didn't get much flak for naming their other race Xel'Naga, for example.

The cybernetics core doesn't exist anymore, and all that stuff is surface-level anyway. There's AI in Terran and Protoss techtrees, both in vanilla and in Cosmonarchy. Furthermore, restricting themes to only what is not at all used in any capacity by the other races in the game would make it impossible for most concepts to be borne out. So in short, I'm also not worried about this.

Thankfully we have some tutorial content online now, and we'll continue providing more introductory materials for those who are interested.
And yes, the roster has grown in the last 2 years! A few more units will be added this year, but most of our techtree-related work is now dedicated to adding the 4th race, with the existing 3 being more or less finished soon.

Neblime joins me to cast the qualification matches of Acropolis #1's first Gauntlet stage! We kick things off with qualification favorite Newt dueling a cheesy veteran in 3crow.

6 April '24 Art_Of_Turtle vs jakulangski - ZvZ - BO5
Your boy AoT locks horns with up-and-coming Zerg jakulangski. Which Zerg will qualify in this series? Will it go the distance? ZvZ action with Neblime and I on the mic!

9 April '24 benno vs TopRamen - PvT - BO3
Another Neblime & Pr0nogo cast, this time for Acropolis #1's second qualifier. Newcomer TopRamen duels veteran benno!
10 April '24 Neblime vs jakulangski - ZvZ - 1 game [The Turning]
And now for something completely different! This custom game mode in Cosmonarchy turns all fallen combatants into mindless zombies after death, resulting in very... different... strategies. Enjoy!

Acropolis #1 is halfway through the Throneroom stage! Here's all four broadcasts we've run so far:
Battlements stage: Day 1 | Day 2 Throneroom stage: Round 1 | Round 2
Acropolis is our premiere 1v1 tournament, where competitors go from a double-elimination BO3 Gauntlet stage (with qualification series being BO5), into a four-group Ascension-style Battlement stage, with the top two in each group qualifying to the double-elimination playoffs phase that we call the Throneroom stage. We're only a week or two away from crowning this year's first champion! It'll be a wild ride.

Hey everyone! Acropolis #1 has come to a close. You can check the whole playlist here!
Here are a collection of games published since my last post! I try not to post every day here, but maybe I should with how many I missed recently... oops!
10 May '24 Neblime vs The Shambler - ZvP - 1 game
A very nice PvZ on a 4-spawn map! Coincidentally, a repeat matchup of Acropolis #1's Upper Final.
11 May '24 Hupsaiya vs Hamster - PvP - 3 games
A preview of Acropolis #1's Elimination 3! Protoss mirrors can be quite explosive.
12 May '24 ECalipso vs Eud64 - PvT - 1 game
The time-tested PvT matchup has been quite hard for Terrans to score in so far. Can Eud64 change that?
13 and 14 May '24 The Shambler vs Krankendau - PvZ - 4 games Part 1 | Part 2
This set was awesome, showing a lot of power and improvement from an upstart Zerg! Can't wait to see more from him!
|
15 and 16 May '24 Neblime vs ECalipso - ZvP - 4 games Part 1 | Part 2
An aggressive series on a fresh map! (And also on an outdated one)
|
17, 18, and 19 May '24 The Shambler vs Hupsaiya - T/P/ZvP - 4 games Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
A set of hotly-contested matches between two of our longest-standing players!
20 and 21 May '24 Eud64 vs HitEmUp - TvP - 5 games Part 1 | Part 2
Terran stalwart Eud64 continues grinding out strategies vs the legendary HitEmUp (aka Leviathan). Some of these have some very epic fights!
|
22, 23, and 24 May '24 Neblime vs jakulangski - PvZ - 8 games Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
Hot off his Acropolis #1 win, Neblime has switched to the only race he hasn't won a tourney with: Protoss! How's he do versus one of our Zerg regulars?
25 May '24 ECalipso vs ArbuzBudesh - PvP - 1 game
This matchup between a new Protoss and an even newer Protoss shows some early-game action on a Cosmonarchy port of Dante's Peak!
26 May '24 Comicalflop vs MartinoForce - RvR - 3 games
Today's cast was of total beginners, and let's just say they had some silly strategies to deploy against one another...
