Gamers8, a multi-game esports festival held in Riyadh by the Saudi Esports Federation, announced that it is adding StarCraft II and Brood War to its games line-up.
While there are few details at the moment, the total prize pool has been announced at $500,000 combined for both games. According to a preview video, the SC2/BW main events are set to be held during August 3-6 (Gamers8 is held for around two months, starting in July).

Make some room for THE REAL OGs of esports!

Great. If this event can continue, it will bring more lasting vitality to BW
|
So will this be somekind of mixed event like the first proleagues in korea where u play both games or just tournaments in different games?
|
|
It's also close to april 1st
|
totally unexpected! great news
|
Seems pretty random, may be somebody in the Saudi organisation was a huge BW fan as a kid.
Or they messed up their April 1st date, we ll see. If legit it s good for the game, even considering the source of the money.
Wonder where they ll source their staff/refs though. Maybe former WCG folks? *wink wink*

sSak looking up airfare to Saudi Arabia

Finally some dirty Saudi money for BW, too. Maybe we can attract some gambling money from Stake next.

Ehhh, with how bad the Saudi government are and how corrupt literally everything is in relation to it I wouldn't see Saudi money as a good thing.

Possibly their current model of ESL (also saudi, same people as this actually) isnt working so great so they are expanding to more loved games. I heard there s CS too from other WCG ref.
Riyad in August doesnt seem like the most amazing place...
That being said though, we had heavy chinese money in WCG, RCG was in Russia, several shady corporate sponsors too over the years. It s just the nature of sports/esports unforunately.
I would still argue that despite it being a blatant image washing, bridging communities and having events are always good

People thinking this is fake are trolling / have done minimal research. This is an organiser which has done large events in other esports already.
Now yes, it is direct Saudi sportswashing, which is of course not great. But it's not a troll lol.
Remains to see still how the prize pool is split between SC2 and BW.

This looks like a scam.
What does phrases "$2,000,000 for humanitarian aid" or "So far, after three editions, we've raised $30,000,000 for good causes. Together we make a difference!" or "Prize pool: $10,000,000 for humanitarian aid!" (from twitter.).
Also, they stated, that qualifiers start at April 14. And announced only sc2 with this info
StarCraft II at Gamers Without Borders 2023: 🖱️ 24 players in two pools 🏆 16 qualify for #Gamers8 🧩 Two stages 🪜 Bo3/Bo5 double elimination bracket 🗓️ 14-23 April
:D what a joke! :D

Nah, it seems they used logo of starcraft:remastered just for no reason. They didn't announce any broodwar info, but said that qualifiers started april 14th, then announced only sc2. So my take is that there will be no bw, or sc2 players will be playing bw for extra $1000 for fun. (sorry for pessimistic :D)

w/e the case, free payday for kors

The linked tweet in the OP literally says: "This August StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2 will be featured on #Gamers8 with a combined prize pool of $500,000!"

Nice, I hope it comes to fruition. Pecunia non olet, as Vespasian is said to have said.

Has anyone talked to them? Sometimes you just have to talk...like, Samsung sponsors a bw tournament in Latinoamerica because one streamer went to their office lol.

I talk to my Samsung about once a week!

I m not following SC:BW at all, but I still think having the BW section only having 1/10 of the pricepool is too small. It is as much as the SC2 Showmatch section. Sad.

Well fuck this tournament, I'm not having good vibes from that saudi money at all and seems like it's only for legends aka old players. 50K total prize pool compared 400K on SC2, no thanks, streamers can earn that amount themselves in short time.

Indeed fuck this, who are they getting Boxer vs Yellow? Is SC2 really that big compared to BW?

I would be more than ok with 50K if this was an actual tournament (even an 8 player bo3/bo5/bo7 Double elim bracket would be great), not just some kind of exhibition, which it seems most likely to be..
shame

Well put up your own $50K then...
I personally prefer watching all the other $50K events... OH WAIT
^_._^
I just take offence of SC2 being bundled with BW...
If the title was $50K SCR event I would be fine with it.

$2Mil for 4 shooter games each, $0.5Mil for SC2. I think we can all see where they are prioritizing things

Twitch right now SC2 1.5k viewers / Fortnight 28k / CSGO 58k.
