Play StarCraft and BroodWar Beta on Battle.net with l2k-Shadow\'s Battle.net Beta Gate!
It\'s been almost a year since the release of StarCraft: Beta Gate by l2k-Shadow. The program provided an enjoyable retreat from the StarCraft norm for several gamers. The fun was short lived though, as l2k-Shadow discontinued support for the program to focus his energies on other projects. Over time, we have recieved several requests to bring StarCraft: Beta Gate back, but it was Goga[OEP] who peaked l2k-Shadow\'s interest for the project once again by also providing BroodWar Beta.
So the new program is no longer a one trick pony, and you can now witness first hand the evolution of StarCraft and BroodWar during their later design phases. Perhaps this can also give us a glimpse at what the current Blizzard Development team is facing as it tests the pre-alpha version of StarCraft II, and see just how much StarCraft Beta changed before it became the packaged retail version.
A big thank you goes out to Goga[OEP] for providing us with BroodWar Beta. Goga[OEP] would like to extend a request to the StarCraft community for any StarCraft or BroodWar Beta patches; as the game\'s stability increases with each patch. Goga[OEP] also has provided us with a complete list of the MPQ files for both betas. They are available for download here.
As far as the gameplay, listen to what Entropy aka Physician had to say about playing StarCraft Beta:
I played it, it was hilarious - workers run almost twice as fast and their pathfinding is retarded. Ovies are fast to start off, and no Lair is needed for a Spire. Tanks cost gas only! The funniest thing? If your opponent leaves the game and you click \"continue to play,\" all of his units will still attack you if you attack them. Tons of other spacy stuff!
Since it is very new to Beta Gate, the BroodWar Beta has not been played much at all, so you have an oppurtunity to play and see what differences you can spot before anyone else!
So what does the future hold for Battle.net Beta Gate? It\'s hard to say for sure, but there\'s a possiblity to add Diablo and Diablo II to the program! The original Diablo Beta could be very interesting to see, as it\'s actually the Battle.net Beta as well!

Hmm, I've had BW beta sitting around since I first started working on SC Beta, but I never installed it, lol. It just didn't seem as alluring as SC's, cause it was just an expansion.
Impressive work on Beta Gate though, nice job Shadow!
wow.. beta is soooooo terrible! haha it feels weird to play. nowhere near as responsive.

All I found out about Protoss in this beta:
Archon is an ability and must be upgraded Archons were orignally designed with an ability that is "not implented" in the beta Archons "merge" is not the same graphic used in the final version
Archons get +1 for each weapon upg (lol)
Zealots does 5 damage Zealot gets 5 + 1 per upgrade(lol) Zealots hit fast as hell
Dragoons hits fast as hell.
Carriers can carry 10 incs and are 80 shields 200 hp Carriers can kill themselves with their own incs
Arbiters are pretty much the same
Probes explode diffrently and are retarded (goes for all workers I guess) as their AI is stupid, not the same floating style etc.
Templars has an attack ability (like Tassadars) Their storm lasts as long as they have mana, meaning you can actually kill any unit with a templar if you have enough mana. Storm costs 25 mana Hallucination lasts forever Hallucination is 75 mana Templars costs gas only (150)
Nexuses are 250 minerals Forge 200 Photon cannon 200
Random stuff:
You can't set rally on any buildings You can't use any mutual abilites in a group (say you group 5 carriers and want to make incs, doesn't work)
Reavers doesnt need support bay to build, only a robotics facility. Shuttles need support bay instead. Everything goes a lot faster on fastest than it does now.
out of boredom I tried out zerg too. These are the changes I can recall right now:
the huge "what the fuck" stamp with zerg was the defiler.
Instead of Plauge it has Blood Boil which is graphically a mini-swarm, that causes damage like irradiate to any units inside it.
"Swarm" on the other hand is a insta-kill spell that kills any unit with a buzzing swarm around them.. rofl. And yes, the defiler can attack too :O
oh and spire needs an evo chamber, not a lair. and nydus canal requires hydraden, not hive. mutas are gas only all upgrades (as the protoss ones) gives +1 for each level.
While by no means you have to trust me, but I'll give you some insight and possibly comfirt in trying out this Beta Gate.
The Beta Gate is open source, meaning the actual source code for the program is available to the public. The Beta Gate was made almost a year ago, and if it had a backdoor or trojan in it that stole your CD-Key, people looking over the code would have cought it.
l2k-Shadow doesn't backdoor his work. (But don't take it from me. If you still don't feel safe using the program, then no soup for you)
While I forget the exact URL, there is a website out there that you can give it a download link, and it will scan the file with several of the better anti-virus softwares out today, and give you a verdict on if its wangaware or not.

BS. It works fine on v1.15.
same problem here and i have no router and no firewall. I can play SC beta but with BW >> UDP problem.
Actually, yea. I need to take step 6 out since the new Beta Gate runs off of StarCraft shareware and no longer requires a CD-Key.
What's your OS? You behind a router? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have Vista Home basic, and I'm directly connected to cable with no firewalls.
Is that 32bit or 64bit? There's a different Deamons Tools application that is made specifically for 64bit OS versions.

You might be able to do that in order to get Vista Ultimate with no monetary requirements. Basic is missing out on a few good features
Oh I KNOW how to get Ultimate, haha. I'm too lazy to do it right now. Thanks for the link anyways. I didn't realize it was possible to do it without any special tricks.
I have 32bit. And I got the 32bit daemon tools. Well I'm at a loss it you took out step 6. Just to make sure--I am the main computer the internet is connected to, but I have a wireless router. Is that affecting it? I'll direct connectly right now and see.
Ok yeah. That was the problem. I need to directly connect to the modem itself. Darn. That really sucks. On one hand I'd be happy playing SC Beta, but on the other I'd be pissing off everyone in my house.
So a few things I found: SCVs gather 10 min/gas at once. CCs only provide 2 supply, you begin with 2 SCVs. Starts off really slow... -___- CCs cost 250min You need to research wraith ground atk tanks and wraith cost only gas (haha, making substantial materials from a gas. weird) YOU CAN ACTUALLY MULTIPLE SELECT LIFTED BUILDINGS!!! Their wireframe doesn't look too good though. You need to research EVERY SPECIAL ABILITY in an unit.
Things move really clunky, you can play 1vs0 (lol.), and you can d/c yourself and play awhile before SC realizes your off the net and pops out an error. Making you terminate the program. DAMN.
It might be too much to ask, but maybe you could trick the program into offline play? Thanks.
Hello, I'm Chris from www.l2uthless.org I'm the other Admin (aside from l2k-Shadow).
And I recentlly made a post obtaining new download links for SC beta & BW Beta that download at 700kb/s and up! So please take a moment to look at our forums
I have a real Brood War beta disk that was sent to me by Blizzard many years ago. I think I will try to sell it as a collectors item once Starcraft 2 gets closer. Anyone have an idea what this would be worth? There were not very many beta testers on battle.net when I played, so it must be pretty rare.
Sorry for bumping this.. anyways, me and a friend were trying to play this last night and got all of it downloaded and ran the Beta Gate and everything. However, whenever we would connect to Battle.Net, we would get the Port / packet error and not be able to play any games. This happened on all four gateways. The question was asked earlier in the thread but no one really answered it... does anyone have any ideas?
Could someone re-upload the Beta-Gate? I have googled like crazy and searched torrent sites like a madman, but I have yet to find it. I have the Starcraft Beta disk-image file, but to get it working using the only other alternative method that I know of - using PVPGN in conjunction with MYSQL to set up a server on a different computer after having altered the battle.snp file with a hex editor in order to trick the beta client to connect to it (all the while behind a router) - simply proved to difficult for me.
So, if someone has it and would be kind enough to upload it somewhere so that I and others may experience what the Beta version of Starcraft was like, that would be very much appreaciated .

http://www.savefile.com/dl/AEK7GBRU Uploaded and done for all to enjoy. I need to know how this works though. I get a runtime 72 error when it says something about the IX86Ver3.mpq file. I tried this on both 32bit and 64bit systems. I am running through wifi. Is that a problem?

:o
do you have the actual SC beta?
Yes I do, am I allowed to upload it here? (If yes, let the nostalgia begin!) I am kind of sick of the SC2 players here that never played SC1 nor even care about it.
For all beta cd-keys use 3333-33333-3333. Also, mount the betas using MagicDisc. Enjoy. If you get it to work, tell me your magic skills please. Share videos and screenshots too. This is considered abandonware. Spelled that wrong too.
Ugh I want this to work so bad but I tried both magicdisc and daemon tools and it still either asks me to insert cd when I try broodwar or I get an error about storm.dll if I try vanilla.
Has anyone had any luck with overcoming the obstacles in the way of getting this Beta up and running yet? I just don't get why it won't work. From what I have undestood, its supposed to be a rather simple task (in theory at least).
1. You use a program called Hamachi (or something similar) to get a server going. This perhaps need to be set-up on another computer, I am not sure.
2. Reconfigure the battle.png file located in the Beta folder using a Hex editor. Specifically, you change one of the off-sets containing the Battle.net server adress to that of your Hamachi server. In this way you make the Beta client connect to your newly set-up server and not the default one (which no longer exists, of course).
3. Play the multiplayer.
However, this does not seem to do the trick. Whenever I try to get onto Battle.net it tells me that there's some kind of TCP/IP issue, that it is unable to detect my internet connection.
I know there are supposed to be other ways of making the Beta work without using Hamachi, namely by using a PVPGN server, MYSQL and a whole lot of other stuff. But that seems far too complicated for someone as computer illiterate as me. So if anyone with some tech skills could take a shot at this, I would be most grateful.
But isn't Hamachi a lan simulator? That's how I understood it at least. And as for using PVPGN; I think you have to do some extra bit of work if you are connecting to the internet through a router. As I can recall, you have to not only open up ports and such, but alter config files as well.
A little help please? I can install the BW beta fine, but when I try to install the sc1 beta it says the cd-key is too short. I've typed in the maximum number of threes: 3333-33333-3333 Any advice?
Thanks, I already found your topic in staredit network and downloaded from it. Also i has downloaded a sc beta version from torrent. But still cant find a BW beta.
I just got SC1 and BW beta and the Beta gate, but I can't get it working. The game is working fine, but is only for battle.net and to get connected it needs a server eh. In previous post it says the gate is offline.
Is there a way to create your own beta server and log into it, modify files to change the beta gate program...or whatever idea someone has to make it works?
I really want to play the beta to explore all those past units, bugs, and whatever else I could find. I know this thread is old, but I think it's better than creating a new one on the same topic.
Thank for the help =D
Edit: Maybe there is a way to use the Starcraft Demo battle.net that is still working?

PvPGN is a regular BNet server [emulation] (all the custom servers out there like ICCup are running modified versions of it), so yeah. You shouldn't actually need 2 computers if you run the linux one in a VM (VirtualBox is free and would probably do the job for you). I could probably hack the beta client to use a different port fairly easily and fix that issue, but I don't have it installed at the moment.
@tec27: I have used your guide and failed although I forget where, it was a long time ago. If anyone is interested I still have the Starcraft beta and brood war beta iso.
