I'm going to introduce one Starcraft league to you, which was begun from an amateur league, but now just turned into a league without "amateur". This league is led by Ken Kim (Commissioner).
TIER
It is named as "HAMIC". It is because there are different tiers according to their abilities: HEL(1/2), AEL, MEL, IEL, CEL(1/2). Those may correspond to the recent ladder HEL1 - above 2400, HEL2 - 2200~2400, AEL - 2000~2200, MEL - 1800~2000, IEL - 1700~1900, CEL - 1400~1700. This partitioning into tiers is to match up players having similar ladder points in team league games. When players join HAMIC, there would be several test games with existing HAMIC players.
Sets
One team league game consists of up to 7 games as below.
1 set - HEL1/HEL2, 2 set - HEL2/AEL, 3 set - AEL/MEL, 4 set - MEL/IEL, 5 set - IEL/CEL1, 6 set - CEL1/CEL2, 7 set for ACE match - HEL1/HEL2. For 1/6/7 sets, lower tier player can ask for higher tier player to change its race in advance. Each team has one chance to deny that change.
