I've been playing this game for a long time...off and on since it was very first realeased and I'd like to dedicate this thread as a way to remember the gamers that have faded away. I miss players like Chrh, GGon, Zeus, Enough, TheMarine,NTT,kOs, Grrr. Remember NC and its old school super dream team? I can still remember sitting in that channel and having TheMarine/Reach/Yellow/and Chojja all in the same channel with me and being in awe
All those players that were only pro for a short while before drifting away. The really old school pros...like :+:jolly:+: or D22-Soso. Or remember Agent911? Players like Jinnam and Jinsu and H.O.T-Forever. Or 30D.O.M, anyone remember those guys?
Like I remember a TvT I think Elky was the opponent and he killed a CC of Love[30D.O.M] with only 2 tanks and dropship. Love was famous then for having an apm of around 400 and he was laughed at for having all that apm but not ever even noticing his cc was under attack. Stuff like this would be awesome to remember or re dig up. If anyone has any information about any forgotten/retired gosu feel free to post it here. With any tibbits of info you'd like to add on them. I'm trying to get in touch with some nostalgia so if you can remember a name that most people wouldn't know still mention it because it might trigger some Or even specific really old games/moments.
For fun here is a game from the Brood War Beta Tourniment Finals Funny stuff. http://www.battle.net/scc/br/final4.shtml

I have not forgotten the gosu's from USA. I still talk to some regularly on aim/msn.

Boxer is newschool compared to almost all the players mentioned above. The only exception being Chojja if I didn't miss one. Boxer became famous in 2001.

I know Whear was good for a long time, I just can't remember what year he started to shine, but I believe only Whear is 1st generation gosu from that list, Froz was 2nd generation gosu in USA, Assem and Rekrul were 3rd.

I remember whear won a $10,000 cash prize (1st place) before at some pretty big tourniment After watching the games I was a huge fan of his A lot of them involved using 6 or so speed shuttles pvt...its kinda crazy to see how different the game was back then.
|
Remember Kiwi's ZvP? Hes not that oldschool but his zvp had a lasting effect on me.
|
I'm pretty sure the best oldschooler is Unilever
|
Remember the ~LiZarD clan, with Jim~LiZarD and GiGGLeS~LiZarD? I think I remember hearing around 2001 that giggles died, but I forget: anyone have details on what happened?
Oh snap http://teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=50482
Giggles was actually a dude? I was conned until today, then. Was the death thing also made up as a clever way to get out of having to do the ruse?

no one quoted Saft who was probably the best foreigner when he owned the first versions of Wgtour. Also Daaman was very strong these days. {SG}Yosh too ...

Yeah there are some other ones like Maynard, [9]NTT (is he BldSwtTrs on 2p2 now?) and [9]eVERLAST, probably tons more I'm forgetting. Of course there is the already mentioned IN clan, with INcinerate and Agent911 being the most known members. Oh and IN^LameKing
I used to hang out in nohunters back in the day, was that or the rival x17. And browsed starcraft.org before TL.net became active.

Those guys are so incredibly bad compared to modern standards. Especially the non-koreans. NTT, rofl.
Yeah, they were really cool and such, and I really enjoyed games of people like Garimto, IntoTheRain or TaeWoo. But Boxer and NaDa still owned them all, easily.

heh. way back before tl.net was big, website to go for sc players was starcraft.org and d22-soso's website which I remember reading his build orders and try to copy them(it was before replay days) then when that died out. After that, it was broodwars.com but then that site became a flame spamming garbage. A lot of people moved on to teamliquid.net but I'm sure a lot of people moved to tl.net because of mensrea, of his coverage of starleagues in broodwar.com. He used to write such well written battle reports of starleague and a lot became his fan. If you are pretty new to the site, you should search for archives of mensrea's battle reports. He wrote those when VODs to the public pretty much didn't exist but you would know how exiting the game was just from the post.

Ah, who could ever forget Zard/Jasmine/crazy korean person.

Wasnt there some clan called [aLt] before boxer was around? I dont remember any names though..

only 2 ones i can think of that i really liked were SirSoni and Sonic~Black. I have an old rep of Nal_Ra vs Sonic~Black somewhere.
|
C-Frenetic, IRONMAN, [pG]Korn, [pG]Kosh, Fisheye, TameTheSheep, OgerEli, C-asanova, Marquis_de_adu, Socke clans: [DEF], FA, TheSheep, C, Marquis, [CORE]
haha that's the names I recall. Don't think anyone will know them.
|
I only remember the oldschool swedish gosus.
Players like KeNKa, SaFT, JessE, MaskeN, Kovax, MaD'FroG, Daaman, WiLLEt, Multifaith, eVERLAST,Dealer,Starglenn,DscO ah.... those were the times ;O! I was really young when those guys were around, and I didnt really get much of what the hell was going on. All I remember was reading news about them and downloading some of their replays when that function finally was let out.
The community was so much more alive and bigger back then, everything was a lot more important ;O

i'm suprised no one has said Brat~Tsunami yet? i wasn't a big fan of his, but for some odd reason he won games vs top gamers. and u can't forget his website...

OH - his name is clawson. also aqrash was pretty good iirc

how could anyone forget V-Gundam

Byun and V-gundam were two people who inspired me to play SC (along w/ Boxer and Yellow). I remember seeing a V-gundam tvp, I was like "wtf mines? turrets? bunkers? floating rax? you're not allowed to build outside your base!". Byun also amazed me w/ his weirdo hat placement and constant aggressiveness.

Aww I'm gettin all misty eyed Actually I think it was Heaven not Love that was the player in the Elky game. I think Love was a zerg player iirc. Also to the guy who mentioned about NTT and all those players being sooo bad compared to game standards...well of course. It's hard for people who never played before replays to understand what a huge impact they had on the progression of the game. Before replays there was a HUGE skill gap among players like NTT/Saft/Slayer/Grr -the top players, and everyone else. They were almost godly They inspired a certain awe that will never be recreated because now you can see exactly WHY someone is bad or WHY certain things dont work. Back then creativity was huge; suprise was huge. NTT filling his command center with scvs (queing up 5 scvs at each cc) was part of his "style". Nowadays it would just be "bad macro" but back then it allowed him to macro "well" and still multitask. I think no one mentioned tsunami because hes not really that forgotten Man I remember Daaman, hes actually in Team Liquid..he was great with all matches. I remember WiLLet was also like one of the only foreigners who continued to do well in WGT after the koreans took over. Ahh good times...

Anyone remember the name of the online tourney that like WCG or something threw, players like Corbalt, Mockturtle(ilnp?), Yosh and stuff.. It was like all on Lotem. I remember it was like RIGHT when reps came out and it was really fun to watch those.

I have no idea and haven't browsed the thread. But anyone remember Chunsang Terran? Zodiac Joypop? I loved watching him duke it out with Rainbow, Crystal, Boxer, and all those fun games.. and watch him get raped. It was lol .. he used to lose in the most tear-jerking ways.

Sauron eVERLAST Grrr of course Jolly/Pillars Soso Multifaith LameKing inControl 88Fingers Kain the Feared XDS Fire Froz Rekrul Tsunami Didi8 Maynard Smuft
These were the main foreigners when I was playing. I was interviewed on broodwar.com so maybe I can add myself but I was never really that good, just above average =)
The best guys from 30DOM were Leader, Gamer before he went off to the army and Love.

hm, you are from korea and remember exclusively german SC/BW players?
i remember them as well, played frenetic (he was aka c-lila-cow or something like that) in a tourney and got raped :-/ socke was and now is again a clanmate (now mainly playing wow) we beat marquis-clan in the qualification-tourney for 1st bwcl season (back in the days, when socke, plague and chaos aka mmmbop played for nSK)
|
The first VOD I watched was a first person of TheMarine vs a zerg, H.O.T I think. I was blown away at his speed and it changed my view on starcraft.
The second game was from the same tournament. Before the match, there was an interview with one of the players who was a white boy. He looked into the camera and said with a gay accent "hi, my name is John Patric". Then he proceeded to make his gateways in the middle of the map (!) for some reason and got raped by the zerg he was playing. I remember I laughed and wondered who let that fool into the tournament. Later I found out he had actually said Guillaume Patry and had been one of the favourites to win.
|
My first time (VOD) was Eugene Vs Sync @ Silent Vortex (not neo). It was NATE OSL i think ^^;
My idol was HOT-Forever, damn i miss his sooo much... T_T Thank you, boxer, for creating air force and showing us hot once more!
btw, ST.Eagle anyone? Didn't he invent mecha tvp?

GGoMa[30D.O.M], LoVe[30D.O.M], and Heaven[30D.O.M] were the only progamers that anyone would remember from that clan (since they played in the old OGN Proleagues) and none of them were that impressive. Love was the oldest and most experienced of the three (his old aka was Reddog), Heaven had fast hands and terrible game sense, and GGoMa was around for maybe half a year with the KOR team and then left. (and no, it's not the same GGoMa as the one on the Pantech team) Heaven was with KOR, but KTF wanted him as a practice partner for some reason, so he moved to that team. Love was on one of those old teams (back when there were 292323 teams with about 3 players each, this was during the PKO days) and he eventually moved to KTF before he went to Hexatron.
Their name stands for 30 Days of Miracles. I don't know why I remember that.

Yep. Lee Chang Deok, Chunsang Terran. I don't remember why he disappeared, but he came back to playing SC again not too long ago. I think around early last year. He had such weird building placement. He also raped the hell out of Yellow on TV during one of those Rival series games 4-1.
Does anyone remember that deaf player that was on Samsung's team a long time ago? He could play all three races well and was really good mannered. I don't remember his name, though. Also, Yoon Hyun Wook (I think his ID was Ring. Don't remember what clan he was in), he played random a lot, but was mainly a P user. I liked him a lot, too. Miss him, a lot. I do remember kalaschni's losses vs Saft in the first ever WGT, and then beating him 2-0 in the finals.

Kala is not THAT oldschool
(he did maybe play since SC came out but started to shine somewhere around wgt season 1 (or beta season, whatever you want to call that thing))

yes, battle.net is a good site,

Does anyone have that rep/link to that rep of Kor-Oddysey vs a protoss I cant remember on LT, where they both proxy 2 gates and 2 raxs in the middle of the map? It was an awesome awesome game and I miss it I think the newer generation needs to see it. And Caucasian Asian...Gonia119_kr is Boxer-- That was the ID he used from WCG. I'm pretty sure he isn't forgotten;)
|
Zileas... he pretty much dominated at the exact time when Brood War came out, but not for long. I think this was the time where there wasn't even a big Korean SC scene yet. 1998... The rise of Boxer was 2 years later. Zileas was basically the "father" of micromanagement, he used Protoss with a lot of micro and "invented" things like proper reaver/shuttle micro or storm drops. Although that was at a time where there was no delay for reaver shooting after unloading it, that's why his reaver/shuttle combo was called "shooting shuttle" (you could unload, fire and load so fast). Agent911 was also around at that time, he played Terran quite well although the game was not yet fully balanced (Terran was considered to be the weakest race at that time). Grrr... was also already around at that time I think, he was like the exact opposite of Zileas with his heavy macro play.

Zodiac and his crazy TvT game with Boxer, some of that ghost micro eh?

I remember watching JulyZerg before he became pro. At some argentinian forums i post i started recommending everyone to watch his replays. His style was innovative back then. He raped the living shit out of everyone with speedling rush into quick muta. I remember he had like 3 or 4 akas and i checked replay sites daily to get mroe reps from him.
)ls(city also! very fun to watch

I used to hang out in nohunters back in the day, was that or the rival x17. And browsed starcraft.org before TL.net became active. then you'd have to say Mark4... hahahaha I think [orky]myst, and [o]Mr.X were fairly good Not sure what happened to KimDongWoo either, i really liked his style.

I don't know if this guy was posted yet...
Anyways what about Byun, he used to be a really good Z user back when I first started playing SC like... 5 years ago.
I also remember the times when Op -NC was the place to be. Being all "giddy" when I was in the same channel as ChoJJa and Yellow. God was I a Starcraft douche bag.

holy shit i remember kor replays when i was learning from reps and watching em for fun... thanks for reminding us i totally forgot about those guys.
Some of my favorite old timers are: [Rush] guild...... they werent top caliber but they had some really good talented people like CosMo.. he was top 10 in kbk i think and won wcg japan vs a really tough crowd. But he was unstoppable at the moment and some luck was in his way. Not sure what happened to him now.
Umm Brood War Wis was the best channel imho.. i remember when i followed this really good guy in a clan i found i thought he was hasu zerg but he was a fake but still really gosu to me at the time. Then i saw all these korean pro names i was like WOW amazing. Ive prolly played over 2000 games on broodwarwis i loved that channel and really got to the point where i baet all the 1v1s and had to move up to wgt.

How about Blackman?
- First Zerg macro machine (those days, people were like "WTF is he doing; Hatchery before Pool??"). - He really did practice against self-scripted AI he forged in good old StarEdit (not an urban legend). - First Polish player to go to Korea and actually win sth (#3 in WCG 2002). Later, gave up SC for studying.
