Do you guys have plans to advertise this project outside of TeamLiquid? I suggest doing an AMA on r/starcraft or r/games.
Also I'm a bit surprised you're not considering crowdfunding this or at least setting up a donation link.

Yes,crowdfunding will draw attention of Blizzard for sure. But a donation link would be nice, for server maintenance.

If any of you guys know about the tesla master plan, it was a 3-step plan to get the company to a point where they could mass-produce the model 3. They first needed to build the cool concept car that only a few people could enjoy (Tesla Roadster = closed beta). Then after all the feedback from the Roadster was gathered and analyzed, and problems solved, they came out with the two in-between models (Model S and X = open beta). These models helped the development of additional features such as self-driving, faster charging, better range, and cross-country charging stations and stores. This would be the time when matchmaking, UMS maps, and other add-on features are developed. Then, like the recent unveiling of the Model S and new US-based production facility on March 31 2016, ShieldBattery would leave beta and have all the features we've been dying for broodwar to have for over a decade. Closed beta exists for a reason, to ensure quality feedback and streamlined communication. It's not a popularity contest or elitist gathering. It's a critical stage of software development. To everyone skeptical or jaded from years of watching projects come and go, just know that this server project is in extremely capable hands. You've got the elon musk of broodwar tinkering away at the future of our game, and it's going to be good. But coding all these features takes time, and unveiling the project is an important step in the grand master plan. So sit tight, wait for those invitation PMs, enjoy a few games on iccup. There's still work to be done. It's happening.

Do you already have enough man-power or do you need more volunteers? And if so, what would be the skills searched for (e.g. translating, coding, statistics, whatever there needs to be done) Coding is the most important and biggest part. We have enough manpower in that regard for what we want to do, but of course having more people helping would always be beneficial. However, the problem is finding people with necessary expertise and enough free time who can help. But in any case, the whole project will be open sourced once we go into an open beta, so anyone will be able to help with what they can.

The goal of the closed beta is to test things in a more controlled fashion. Until we're certain that failures are incredibly rare, we want to ensure we can have a close relationship and tight feedback loop with all of our testers. We also want people that won't run away from the site and never come back if they encounter a bug ![]() So, once we feel pretty good about the state of things and feel like we don't need that tight feedback loop any more, we'll open things up to anyone who wants to sign up. I would estimate this is in the range of ~months, but I'm not promising any particular dates. This is, after all, a side project for me; I have a full time job that has to come first.

So there is no need to monetize. If the server gets too popular, it can be easily scaled due to the elasticity of cloud hosting. They have Fish. The only reason they'd play on SB is the same reason they did it on Iccup. For kicks and giggles, they'll lose interest and go back to Fish. The bad koreans will stay and learn and then head to Fish. =)

Once they see him streaming it, I'm sure they'll sign up.
