They said they had to change the graphic renderer that the game is built on in order to support stuff like dynamic lighting. So it's not too surprising that would have some negative impact on the SD mode.

is this going to be compatible with remastered?

does that make any sense or is it more likely to just assume it's about pushing sale numbers?

How does that not make sense? I think you'd have to have a good knowledge of the engine and graphics to really say that it was unnecessary. Let's not try to assume the worst and interpret anything that could be remotely seen as some greedy move to be Blizzard wanting money.

BW became a pixelated mess as early as patch 1.18, presumably as a result of fixing the rainbow colors bug and other issues.

I still use SB from time to time. I do not like the HD for protoss (and I m P) so I play in low D with remastered too. I only use HD for campaign or when i play T/Z or random multiplayer.
But in SB it s funnier, I know several people there, we have great games (race wars) and overall a pretty nice atmosphere. I find the new bnet less cold as SC2's but still bother me such as all the issues with the friend list ( /f m, /f a) For instance not being able to discuss with your opponent after any ranked game in a easy way (cant click on the profile in the scorescreen...) makes for a tedious process to meet anybody new.

I tried SB today but could not create a game. Just kept getting a failed to initialize game error. I pointed it to a directory with the old 1.16 executable, which used to work for SB. Not sure why it is failing now, but I haven't been on Shield Battery since it was browser only.
1.18 bnet used to be pretty playable, but 1.20 is dropping frames and making my cursor lag like crazy. I had to resort to iccup today, which is not ideal since my friend can't get it to work in a correct aspect ratio. He didn't have iccup launcher running, so we played one game in 2001 style input lag T.T 1.20 also somehow made the game look like it was compressed like hell, probably some issue with not actually changing my monitor resolution to something appropriate.
Feels like there is no BW for old men anymore. It is weird how bad Blizzard's new bnet interface is, with these off-client interfaces that take literally 5 minutes to load a login menu on a 6 year old laptop (but with a perfectly fast internet connection). Unsure what's wrong with my install of BW for SB, but I guess I would have to get a fresh install to really figure it out. Things are starting to get to be too much work for these old bones that play SC just about once every two months.
I dunno how Blizzard turned BW into a game that can only run on new computers. Part of the reason I play BW is because I don't update my hardware I have an old windows computer that used to be good, and I'm not going to spend hours trying to get BW to feel right on a modern mac (because hint hint it never will).
Anyway, just venting. Initialize error is probably something weird on my end. Maybe I pointed it to the wrong backup SC folder, I have about 3 or 4 now

you are like the 0,1% that does not upgrade his pc after ....what 10years+?

He has a point though, it takes a long time for that Blizzard App to load as well as BW. Before it took like 2s to start BW, now it is at least a minute for me.

on my pc from 2012 it takes 2sec to load (without ssd)

I mean Blizzard App plus BW. BW takes like 5s now but until that App is ready...

But no, you're wrong. On my modern 1.7 GHz 8GB RAM SSD computer it takes a century to patch to 1.20. They've probably got a myriad of junky reporting code in there giving them the sweet stats in the background as they walk your entire file tree to append smiley faces at the bottom of each file. You should be able to run 100 instances of this game on your modern gaming rig and see no slowdown, not pushing your hardware for a 20 year old game. Think how sad I am on my 1.6 GHz 3GB of RAM windows laptop, which is the only windows machine I have around. 3GB of RAM was practically a super computer in 1998! Face facts, their patch is dog tier. Damn my new computer isn't even that much more powerful. People used to dream of this kind of power! The power to run 100s of instances of StarCraft! Now look at what we've become! We think people won't notice our sneaky calculations just because the gamer elite all buy a new PC every 2 years to play the newest Dark Souls in ultra HD.

Same here, brethren. My laptop is only 3 years old, it can run newer and more demanding games, runs 1.16 no problem, but 1.20.... the blizz app... May be it's only a laptop problem? How many of us having the same problems? Will blizzard do anything about it? Iccup is like 50 people online at times :S

Do you want to tell me, that I need a current high-end PC to not have load times from 20 years ago for a game from 20 years ago?

I would still be interested in using it with 1.16.1.
