We announced the TLS Championship over five months ago and now it is time to provide you with all the necessary details which will focus mostly on the preliminary round, the first stage in our tournament. Seeing as this tournament could be considered a culmination of three TeamLiquid Legacy Starleagues and twenty TeamLiquid Legacy Cups, we have decided to do something non-standard for our preliminary stage, which in effect serves as new version of open qualifiers. Please read the format section carefully!

One thing must be mentioned before explaining the format and that is the matter of seeds from the previous three TLSs. It was mentioned multiple times during the original three TLSs that there would be some kind of a seeding process in TLS Championship based on your performance. However, after spending a lot of time thinking and discussing this with our staff, we have decided to get rid of the seeding process and wipe the slate clean for everyone. The reason for this is quite simple; when we originally said that there would be a seeding process, we did not expect to have a two year break between the last TLS and the championship. In this time, a lot of the things have changed, most notably, quite a few of the players who would get seeded have stopped playing BW altogether and their results do not carry enough weight anymore.

With all of that being said, we hope you all join the TLS Championship and show everyone, including the potential sponsors, that foreign BW is not dead!

Prize Breakdown

Prize

Format

TLS Championship consists of two stages: preliminary and elimination stage. Preliminary stage is available to everyone and it will serve as an open qualifier for the elimination stage. Preliminary stage can be best characterized as a mini-ladder, where all the players will play equal amount of matches against the opponents of their similar skill. After the preliminary stage is finished, 32 best players will be selected based on their results and will be placed in the single-elimination bracket.
Format

Prelims

Preliminary stage is a modified Swiss format, where instead of everyone playing everyone, players will play seven rounds of bo3 matches against the opponents with the similar results as them. Upon signing up for the TLS Championship, everyone will be placed into a single group. For the first round, we'll randomize the matchups and everyone will play a single bo3 match. After the first round, four groups of players will form: those who won their first round with a 2-0 score, those who won with 2-1, those who lost with the 1-2 score and those who lost 0-2. For the second round, each player will be matched against another player who has the same/similar score as them. This will continue for the total of seven rounds.

The maps used in a preliminary stage are: Fighting Spirit, Neo Medusa and Heartbreak Ridge. And they are played in that order. Which means that each round of the preliminary stage is a bo3 match in the following format:

Player 1 < Fighting Spirit > Player 2
Player 1 < Neo Medusa > Player 2
Player 1 < New Heartbreak Ridge > Player 2 (if needed)

Single-Elimination

Elimination stage is a standard single-elimination format, where the 32 players with the best result in the preliminary stage will be placed in a bracket. Seeding of the single-elimination bracket will be determined based on your ranking in the preliminary stage; 1st place plays vs 32nd, 2nd place vs 31st etc. All rounds will be bo3 until semi-finals, which are bo5 along with the third place match. Finals are bo7. Maps used in the elimination stage will be announced at a later date.

Schedule

For players, designated time for each round in the preliminary stage is every Saturday at 18:00 GMT (+00:00). If you're unavailable to play at this date, it's up to you to reschedule your match to a time that you're available.

Broadcast of the TLS Championship will be every Sunday at 19:00 GMT (+00:00).

First round starts on January 9th at 18:00 GMT (+00:00) for the players and broadcast will follow on January 10th at 19:00 GMT (+00:00).

Registration

Seeing as there is no software that supports our ambitious format of the preliminary stage, we had to improvise a bit. TL Tournament system that you're all familiar with from TLCs will be used for registration, displaying the matchups and uploading the replays. This, in combination with Liquipedia where full results will be posted, should be enough to be as transparent as possible with minimum confusion.

Read this part carefully - Everyone who wants to play in the TLS Championship has to sign up only once. It's not necessary to check-in in the TL tournament system; everyone who signs-up will be considered as participating player in the tournament, checked-in automatically and included in all the next rounds. TL's tournament system will be used to generate a bracket and display the matchups (only the first column in the TL's bracket will be used). For the first round, the matchups will be randomized; after you have finished your games, you have to report the result and upload the replays for that round. After each round, results will be gathered and checked, total score for each player will be posted on Liquipedia and matchups for next round will be determined. At that point we'll reset the bracket that was used for the previous round in TL's tournament system and fill it in with matchups for next round. This may sound a bit complicated at first, but it will be really simple once you see how it works after the first round.

FAQ

Who is eligible to play in the TLS Championship?
For the TLS Championship, we have decided to stick with the same eligibility rule as we had in TLC series. You can read that rule in the TLC info, under the FAQ.

Seeing as it will undoubtedly be asked, yes, this means that Scan is not participating.

How long will the preliminaries last?
There will be seven rounds in the preliminary stage. Only one round will be played per week, so that means there will be seven weeks of preliminary stage.

What if I can't make one of the rounds?
Designated time to play each round will be on Saturdays at 18:00 GMT (+00:00). If you can't make it for one of the rounds, it's up to you to reschedule your match to a time that you're available. Matchups for each week will be available by Monday after each round, so you'll have five days to do so. If you fail to play one round, you will be given a 0-2 score for that round.

My opponent isn't responding/doesn't allow me to reschedule.
Please contact the administrator with any disputes regarding the scheduling of matches.

What about walkovers?
Walkovers result in a 2-0 victory for the player that was present at the scheduled time. You may not be walked over more than twice this tournament. If you receive a third walkover, you will be removed from the tournament.

What happens if there are odd number of players in the preliminary stage?
The lowest ranked player will receive a walkover in each round.

Can I sign up late?
You may sign up late only for the duration of the first two rounds. Starting with the third round, sign ups will be closed. If you sign up late, you will receive 0-2 result for each round you've missed.

How are the matchups for each round determined?
Besides the first round, which has randomized matchups, in each subsequent round we'll start with the top player and pair him with a player of same score as him. If there are none who has the same score as him, the one closest below him will be chosen. If there are multiple players with same score to choose from, one will be chosen at random.

Is it possible to play against the same opponent twice in the preliminary stage?
Yes, but this is unlikely to happen.

What happens if there are multiple players with the same score at the 32nd place after the last round?
Tiebreakers, if necessary, will be determined in the following order: (1) previous head-to-head results, if any, (2) total rounds won, (3) additional games played between involved parties.

What about banned or previously disqualified users?
Banned users (for any reason) cannot enter these tournaments. Do not try to circumvent by creating smurf accounts. We will find you, and you will be disqualified from the TLS and future TL events.

What about hackers / cheaters / abusers?
Any sort of cheating may result in disqualification from the TLS and from future TL events. We take cheating very seriously, and we will hand out harsh punishments.

Tournament will be held on the iCCup Server.
Do not register unless you have an iCCup Account (you can get one for free right here) and can play on the iCCup server.

Official iCCup Channel: op Legacy. You're not required to join this channel to find your opponent, but referees will be in this channel if you need to ask any questions.

iCCup Name Changes: If you have changed your iCCup name you need to let the system know! Be sure to check your account details as people have been disqualified from previous TL events due to incorrect information.

iCCup Chat Commands: A short list of useful commands to aid those who are new to iCCup navigate and communicate with players/staff/refs:

+ Show Spoiler +
/Whois [name]
This command allows you look up if the person is online/offline, which channel or game they are in. E.g. /Whois Elegant

/W [name] [text]
If you need to privately message or get in direct contact with someone simply type in /W followed by their name and then the message. E.g. /w TLSPlayer15 Are you ready to play?

/R [text]
This command allows you to quickly reply to the last person who directly messaged you. E.g. /R Yes I am ready to play

/Join [channel]
Allows you to join a channel. E.g. /Join op TSL

/DND [text]
As you may have figured, this command prevents anyone from contacting you. Simply type in /DND followed by your quick note. E.g. /DND trying to qualify for TLS.
To turn off DND, simply type /DND again.

Note: Spoilers: Remember, due to the nature of this tournament, games will be cast from replays. As a result, there is a potential for spoilers.

Note: In game observers:
No observers outside of designated TL casters. Their IDs will be listed in the rules here. If your opponent tries to have observers, you must stop the game and contact a referee. This means you can leave if he invites his friends or just starts the game. It is your responsibility not to allow it.

Format
  • Preliminaries and single-elimination.
  • Preliminaries are a modified Swiss Format.
  • Instead of everyone playing everyone, every player will play seven rounds against an opponent of similar skill.
  • After seven rounds of preliminaries have been played, 32 players with best total scores will be chosen for the main event, which is a single-elimination bracket.
  • Tiebreakers, if necessary, will be determined in the following order: (1) previous head-to-head results, if any, (2) total rounds won, (3) additional games played between involved parties.
  • Single-elimination bracket will be filled based on your final standing in the preliminary stage. 1st place plays vs 32nd, 2nd place vs 31st, etc.
  • Best of 3 until Round of 8.
  • Best of 5 in Ro4 and Third Place.
  • Best of 7 in Finals.

TLS Rules
  • Players are permitted to stream their games in the preliminary stage; streaming or spoiling the single-elimination stage will result in disqualification.
  • Players may not have any stream open in the background when playing.
  • Any violation of TLS Rules may result in game forfeit and future suspension from TLS and other TL events.
  • No cheating in any way. This includes any sort of hack or illegal program and receiving messages from friends watching the stream. This also includes account sharing or playing under an ID that you did not register under.
  • Players must set status to /dnd during tournament matches.
  • Players must arrive within 20 minutes of the end of the previous round. After 20 minutes, every 10 minutes is a game loss for the player who is not present. Ex: with one player present for 30 minutes, 1-0, 40 minutes, 2-0.
  • If your opponent is not present for 20 minutes, please message a referee.
  • Players may change race between games.
  • Players may not play in another tournament that conflicts with TLS play time. Referees may disqualify players that delay the TLS due to scheduling conflicts.
  • Referees may warn and disqualify players for chat violations, including excessive or abusive insults toward players, observers, or referees.

Maps and Host Rules
  • Games will be hosted on one of the approved maps from the iCCup map pack.
  • In all series, the host must create on designated map for that round.
  • The map order in the preliminary stage is: Fighting Spirit -> Neo Medusa -> New Heartbreak Ridge (if necessary).
  • Maps cannot be played twice in a series.
  • It is the player's responsibility to check the map pool. If a player protests an incorrect map after playing a game on it, the game will not be replayed.
  • If neither of the players can host, contact the referee who will host the game for you.

Map Pool: TeamLiquid Legacy Starleague Championship will use three maps for the preliminary rounds: Fighting Spirit, Neo Medusa and New Heartbreak Ridge. Maps for the elimination round will be announced at a later date.

Download: The maps used in this tournament are from the iCCup map pool, and are available to download here

Disconnects and Lag
  • If your opponent is disconnecting, players should take a screenshot of the lag screen and contact the tournament referee.
  • If a disconnect happens in the first five minutes and there has been no player-opponent contact, game will be replayed.
  • In a Bo1, if a disconnect happens after player-opponent contact, disconnecting player may receive a loss. The Referee will make the final decision after reviewing the screenshot and replay.
  • In a Bo3, if a disconnect happens after player-contact, player must contact Referee immediately and Referee will decide how to proceed after reviewing the evidence.
  • Referees and Tournament Administrators reserve the right to overturn results or award wins based on evidence they see.
  • In a disconnecting situation, both players can agree to a regame.
  • If there is persistent unplayable lag (lag screen comes up more than once in a short time), players must contact a Referee who will decide how to proceed.

Coverage and Observer Rules
  • TL will officially cast some selected matches from each round.
  • No observers are allowed in games other than those designated by TL.
  • TL will designate "approved" observers who will be allowed to observe and broadcast games.
  • TL referees are also allowed to be in game.
  • There will only be a maximum of one observer in each match.
  • If game lags with an approved observer in game, that observer must leave at the request of a player. If a TL referee is in game, he will make this decision.
  • Observers and broadcasters are subject to the same rules for cheating and abuse as players. TL may suspend observers from future TL events if violations occur.

Guys, it doesn't matter if my account on the iccup website doesn't work, right? It's a problem for tournaments since I can't sign up and play with the same account (should probably have just started playing on a new account zz) but since this is done via the TL site it'll be fine right?

wasn't gonna sign up but 32 players is a lot how many good white bw players can there be right? hue

Lots of information, hyped for the tourny!

Really can't believe Neo Medusa is being used as a map though, but I guess wanted some three player map that wasn't rehashed as much..

Great News, im very glad to see this finally happen and im also quite hyped for it :D

Some questions from the top of my head, if you don't mind

- Showmatch i always loved the Showmatch at the end of the TLS. Will there be a showmatch, don't you know for sure yet?

- activity I think the System you picked for this is interesting, but i ask myself, aren't you [the TO] worried about the amount of walkover's that could hapopen in the later Rounds?

hmh i thought i had more Questions, but only these first (;

No, each round of the 32-elimination bracket will be played per week. Ro32, Ro16, Ro8, Ro4, Third-place + Finals = 5 weeks (this gives everyone time to prepare for their opponent better).

Question:

Is the in-game timer feature on mcalauncher allowed? Don't want to start using for timings if it's not.

Yes, that's exactly the reason! :d

Also, keep in mind that these maps will "only" be used in for the preliminary stage. Elimination stage will have different maps (and 5 of them).

Showmatch - don't know for sure yet, but we hope there will be!

Activity - not sure what to expect about activity. We are little worried, but let's hope it won't be too big of a problem.

You don't have to use the same account on ICCup as your TL name. Just write the name you're gonna use on ICCup in the box when registering.
