As many of you have probably known, about a year ago, the famous autobiography "Crazy As Me" by the Emperor was translated into English by BinaryStar at yohwanbiography.blogspot.com for few charpters before being abandoned.
Today, the torch has been passed to another member of the zealous Starcraft world. Marencielo, the author of the much respected progaming blog Sense of Star, has proceeded the uncompleted translation work of "Crazy As Me" at boxerbiography.blogspot.com. The book, first published in Korea in the Fall of 2004, is a comprehensive and stirring story about the life of the most important figure of e-sports, hence is an invaluable gift to all who see Starcraft as their life's passion.
Marencielo's deep knowledge about progaming plus his masterful writing skill are well known by many, so there should be no doubt about the quality of his translation work. It's been nearly a month since Marencielo told me (as the admin of BoxerForever) he would like to continue Binary's work, and so far he has nearly finished the first charpter of the book. His translation work is still going on, but I think it's time to announce all about his awesome work (I can't keep it for myself any longer ).
Now go to http://boxerbiography.blogspot.com , enjoy the Emperor's incredible adventure (and don't forget to show some appreciation+encouragement to our great great silent contributor as well! ).
G'day to all ^^ MrDX BoxerForever.com

haha I was looking at the thread title and reading the OP thinking... "Isn't this really old news... why hasn't this been closed?" but now I understand, thank you for the update LR (Assuming you are the one who translated it) even if not thanks for notifying me that it had been mostly finished.
|
Nice ... I just started reading it.
|
Yeah awesome stuff!
I know this is all about Starcraft here, but in the end it is all eSports... lately China's best and most respected Warcraft 3 player Sky started to write in his blogs about how gaming started for him, and somehow that reminded me often about parts in Boxer's liffe:
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 !! Part 4
|
|
on the sidenote - there is a new senseofstar blogpost after long time of inactivity. "Duality" - on Bisu and Stork. Check it out!
|
After my encounter with Starcraft, my head was filled completely with the game, whether I was sitting of standing. I looked up the terminologies of Starcraft such as ‘zealot’ with the English-Korean dictionary that I had never used, and I fell completely into its world, saying things like, ‘Need more minerals’ when lunchtime drew near.
lol
this is great, thanks for posting

Wow that is amazing! I found a PDF download link but I guess it's not needed anymore xD
So does this mean the biography was taken down on July 25, 2011? Can't believe so much time has passed... thought I would have checked his biography sometime between then and now.
Thanks!

Sorry for necro but didn't want to open a new thread to ask one question. Those links are no longer working. Is it currently possible to buy / legally download an English translation somewhere?
|
|
I am more saddened by the loss of SenseofStar blog than Boxer's biography
|
its good. i read it in one sit
|
Thanks a thousand. It's going to be an interesting read. I'm a WC2-WC3 person and Starcraft 1 was generally lost on me, so it was perhaps 1-1.5 years ago I even heard the name. But I have huge respect for the man and almost regret not having seen him in his heyday.
Has the book been okayed for a freely downloadable translation? (By the way, huge thanks to the translator for putting in all the work free of charge... I'm a fellow translator myself, though a different language obviously. If you guys ever happen to need to translate some Polish, just drop me a line.) I'm asking because if not, then I guess I should buy the Korean version somewhere to pay for it.

I can't believe if Boxer is really retiring for good, or just taking a break as a coach and considering returning as a player... after having read this autobiography, it's so sad that he's giving up now... what happened to the potential 40s year old progamer? His promises of going out with a bang, after having won a big tournament? promises that he is only taking a break due to his shoulder...
anyone think the reason why boxer hasn't retired officially (is there a statement somewhere?) is because he's still considering progaming or is all hope lost and i can go sadface the rest of my life now?

What? Didn't he just officially become the head coach of SKT again with Park stepping down? ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=375999 )
I thought he was doing that to try and rekindle his passion. Regardless, let's see what the future holds

yea
and yes that's what i'm hoping, that as jessica says he might find the passion to play again, but if park is stepping down... i don't see it happening likely (if park were still there, i'd guess that boxer's role was more to teach them SC2, and thus he could transition back into a player after SKT1 got "used" to SC2)

Thought it was already fully translated 0_0. Guess I've got some more reading to it

He should write a sequel about his wife called "... but not as crazy as her"
... seriously though, I hope one day he goes and writes part two/whatever of the story since then... I've read the biography 5+ times now and still smile like a goof when I get to the end each time.

it is fully translated, the link in this OP/thread isn't the full thing tho, someone uploaded a pdf here somewhere on TL and you can use archive sites like waybackmachine to find the old autobiography which was online in full
|
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but it seems that the link for BoxeR's biography is down. I tried using the Waybackmachine searching for Crazy as Me but it didn't show up... Anyone have this still?

Thanks man, much appreciated . Told a friend about this biography and was disappointed that the link went down.

I found this book recently and decided to typeset it nicely in Latex, so I can print it and read it. It might be useful also for others, to print or read in a book reader.
PDF file source files
Feel free to write any comments, errors, so I can fix them. Also, if you would like to get some specific reformating (for A5 for instance), feel free to ask.
EDIT: Links updated for new version.

SICK! Thank you so much, that's a lot of work. If I could, I would shower you with TL+. :D
|
I have read the entire book and I have uploaded a new version, with several typos fixed. I have also fixed some issues from the original translation.
Btw. this book is truly amazing. I started watching BW long after Boxer's era, and so it was very interesting for me to learn more about him. And his deep understanding of professional gaming is truly amazing, I absolutely love this quote from the book. If only all other progamers were thinking like this:
The most important thing is to win. But that was insufficient. ‘How he wins’ – that was what the fans expected. Though there are fans that simply come to watch me win, I had to think, ‘How will I win? With what strategy will I make a dramatic impression and win?’ Playing games with friends as a hobby and being a progamer are different. Obviously a progamer must play games well, but they must also play games that make it enjoyable for the people that are watching. A progamer does not hope to win through the mistakes of the opponent. Controlling the game with a strategy that I created, and winning with a scenario that I desired – that was the kind of victory that I hoped for.

I think i'm gonna read it again.
Thank you

Thank you! I was actually never able to finish reading this book, the link to the translated version got deleted.
|
wow nice! out of curiosity, do you have the original korean version anywhere?
|
Thanks, I am glad you like it! My motivation to make this was to make it for myself, so I can read it; I hate reading from websites. (And it took me less than two days, so not so much time needed.) And when already finished, I am glad I can share it with other people. It would be very sad if this wonderful translation would be lost because the blog is non-existent.
Since I was just using the web translation from that blog, I don't have the Korean version, sadly.
|
Really appreciate the effort. I think I'll give this a second read

I started to translate this in French. I'll get back to you and give it to you when i have finished it and when it will be corrected (i'm not that good in english).

<3 Boxer. Forever an inspiration.

I did 15pages for now

I will bump this post with a double post (but i think edit would not bump it) because i have trouble with my translation.
After re-reading chapter 1, i have troubles differenthing High school, college and academy. What is the academy ?
Because i can't understand what it means and how to find a French equivalent. If someone could explain to me it would be really cool.
(Also for people that see the bump and never red this, the links in OP are dead. But there are working on page 5).
|
Academy refers to 'hagwons (학원)' which are private classes / schools that are very popular in Korea, especially amongst students preparing for exams or college.

Oh thank you.
So if i understand you can to this regardless of age and class. Also how much time does the school takes in korea ? Because i see 12th grade and want to match it to the french system for my translation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_South_Korea
Based on this. 12th grade is first year of high school ?
Thank you again
|
classes préparatoires would be the more correct term for Hagwon
Also 11th/12th Grade are the last years of high school is more equivalent to the lycées.
10th Grade is the first year of high school in Korea:
Grades 1-6th: Elementary
Grades 7-9th: Middle School(collèges)
Grades 10-12th: High School(lycées)
I unfortunately can't find the french equivalent for elementary and if some of these are congugated wrong I apologize, only took a semester of french.

I have a question regarding your translation:
Judging by the context / what you wrote in this thread, you translated the English version into French, right? English-French, rather than Korean-French?
