One of the things I really love about Age of Empires 2 is the Gaia elements and randomness of the map generation. Gaia elements range from food you have to collect in various relatively micro-intensive ways (compared to the resource gathering in BW), avoid hostile Gaia creatures, etc. They add an interesting layer of "checks" on your play that even top players fail sometimes. I feel like critters in BW fill a more boring version of that purpose, to an extent. Any player who has played long enough has had to kill a critter to place a building. I don't think it's all that interesting, but it's also not a big ask, too. And, considering the fact that we have entirely static maps otherwise, I don't think it's a huge deal, either. So while I agree there may not be much benefit or gameplay value added from critters, I don't think they are such a big issue that it needs to be removed entirely from competitive maps. They do add to the aesthetic for me a bit, and make the maps feel more lively, or at least lived-in. Plus! Casting Parasite on neutral critters is one of the coolest things you can do in the game, IMO ![]() | ||

It's always fun when you try to check the high ground on polypoid for an overlord scout early in PvZ and can't get up the ramp because of an ursadon. That's the kind of high quality skill based gameplay I think we all love. | ||
