Yes, that would be F-rank I guess. You'll have to play a few placement matches before you can start the actual laddering. If you're totally new to BW you shouldn't be surprised to lose most or all of these games and be put on the lowest rung. As you assume correctly, most people who play BW nowadays have done so for a long time and even people slightly above the lowest ranks will be rather skilled (relatively speaking). There might even be quite a big gap between the lowest and the highest F-rankers. Also, because the playerbase is rather small overall, you can expect to be matched against better players from time to time.
Shouldn't stop you from having some fun on the ladder though.

yes I will try, also just curious how it goes. I figured I play some campaign again, just to get a feel for the game. Then let´s see.
Playing the campaign first is a great way to re-familiarize yourself with the basic controls, units, etc. Use this time as an opportunity to get comfortable with control groups (ctrl+# to assign a control group to units or a building, same # to select it, same # twice to jump to it) and hotkeys (like b for build, n for Nexus, p for Probe, or whatever custom hotkeys you set) in particular.

Yes, thanks for the good advice. I played a lot of SC2 back in the days so I know my way around hotkeys, just sucks that in BW almost everything is on a different one :p I saw that you can change that now though, which I guess is a sin, but I will have to do it just cause of habit.
Another quick question: I wanted to play without an opponent to practice macro and hotkeys a bit, but it always tells me I cant custom game without an opponent, and I cannot use this old trick I found of removing the opponent while there is a countdown, because there is no countdown no more. Is there any way around this? Also tried to use cheatcode "there is no cow level" but that just gets me to victory and the option for playing after you won is also not there...

There are no opponent maps floating around out there, but I don't have one on hand. Perhaps try searching on TL.
Otherwise, the countdown timer is still very much present, but it is only for online play (as always). Thus, you can still do the trick on Battle.net in a private game, I believe.
Beyond that, in single player you can just do "power overwhelming" to be invincible, so even if you do get attacked, nothing will happen to your units. Since you're macroing, you may as well use your units too ;P
EDIT: I think I may have found a macro alone map in my downloads, I believe you have to start in UMS mode:

Regarding change hotkeys, I played BW quite abit during the ICCUP days and changed the hotkeys immediately on Remastered launch. Spent years pressing O for siege, I for mines and irradiate and couldn't stand it for another second haha.
played a game against this protoss, he started going "leave" "why arent u leaving" "do i have to destroy ur 1 oclock for u to leave" once he thought he was winning
but i had a hidden expo and destroyed his ass, then he just left silently lmao
Does anyone have the inside scoop on how so much cheesy power metal (or whatever its called) has made its way into OSL/MSL/ASL intros?
I guess there's some e-sports mogul who's the one person in Korea who unironically listens to this or perhaps some Nightwishy subculture in Seoul, but I'm really at a loss of how they dig up gems like this:

I read your post and then thought let's try a game or two I haven't played in a really long time. 1st game I lost, standard no-chat into gg. 2nd game I won and the opponent wrote "kill yourself" and left. Who are these people lmao

People who need to feel better about playing the same game since 1998 and still being unable to get over it that they blow even in a tiny player pool.

Playing ladder in the 2000~ range and I've been randomly called a "chink" multiple times by different people. And when i clearly respond in English, they would say shit like ching chong chang. I was using a barcode id and we were playing with good latency so i have no clue why they would identify me as a certain race. And it's 2020 in a 20yr odl game. I can only assume the people saying this shit are not teenagers.
