Hi, I was wondering how can I watch some really old replays I found.
I don't really remember what version they belong to.
I hope you understand, this is not my language thx!

BWChart can usually guess what version they were played on based on date created. Then you just need to run the old executable.

http://lmrb.net/doc.php?f=data/useful/run_bw/index.htm

LRMB can do it too. Basically like BWChart - the chart + other features.

You can use this to downgrade and upgrade your ordinary SC exe rather than having a separate exe per version, if you want.

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the bump, but I can't make a new thread since I just registered.. And this thread is sort of the same categorie.

So i recently installed Brood War again, and I want to watch some old replays I still have. These replays can't be watched with the 1.16 version of Brood War, so I have downloaded the old executables from bwreplays.com and put these in the StarCraft folder.

But when I try to open one of the old executables, it says it can't be read, since the CD is not in the CDROM drive.. But the CD is definitely in the drive! Anyone knows how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Well. Executables only sometimes work without big problems. There's an easier, but more time and space eating solution:

1. Download the patch you need
2. Un-Install existing Brood War
3. Install from CD
4. Patch Up
5. Copy and paste the Install in an own folder (e.g. ...\StarcraftPatch\)
6. Open the replay in the install

Helped me out the most. Back when I still made highlight clips I had up to six different Patch installs. It's less painful if you use another version to actually play on 1.16.1 and rarely crashes.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry I need a little bit more additional info

So I uninstalled Brood War. Do I need to reinstall StarCraft only, of Brood War too? Cause if I reinstall Brood War too, it automatically installs the 1.16 version (right?)

And what do you mean by 'Patch Up'?.. After I reinstalled the game, I can just run those patches one by one and use those patches to open that specific version of the game?

Thanks in advance again!

Alright, forgot about that, the method is older and not exactly the most efficient one. So let's go through it in detail:

There are at least a dozend tutorials I know, which would tell you how to get old versions to run somewhat "proper". Most of them I would not recommend, as you could easily fuck up Brood War good, so you're forced to re-install - this includes outdated "downpatchers" or stuff like that (downpatchers can be found in the data archive I linked above).

If you download Brood War via battle.net it will most likely automatically install the latest patch. As a consequence, you shoul install StarCraft and Brood War from an old CD if you got one. This should (if I remember correctly) give you 1.04 Brood War. Now, do not go online to the Battle.net. Instead, install an older patch (e.g. 1.15.3) from the links I gave you. At this point, copy and paste your entire Starcraft folder in Windows to somewhere else.
Keep the usual one and patch it to 1.16.1. This one you can now use to play online competitively if you want. The other one you can use to just view old replays via LAN or Single Player.

You can do this for each patch, e.g. 1.08 to 1.16 (not 1.16.1). Depends on you how much versions you need.

In contrast to the executable version the manual "up patching" and "copy pasting" of the folder allows you to also try to install outdated launchers, e.g. if you find a working Penguin Plug version. For some patches (1.10 to 1.14 iirc) you will also need these old launcher to view games from foreigners.

The executable version (only open the old .exe files) has the advantage of not needing a lot of hardware space. If you get the CD Bug, this trick might help you, even though it's not a "fix":

1. Open BW with 1.16.1
2. Go into any game and deactivate the sounds completely (music and unit sounds)
3. Close BW 1.16.1
4. Try to open an older patch file

In some cases this does the trick. No explanation why that is, because I'm a tech newb.

Another method is to use 7x Patcher: http://starcraft.7x.ru/content/files_real_down.php?fid=737
