drones/scvs/probes: nong ming (peons) Terran: marine: qiang bing (riflemen) medic: hu shi (nurse) firebat: huo bing (fire soldiers) ghost: ghost (straight from english, not used enough for me to gather it from chinese commentators), gui bing (ghost soldiers) siege tank: tan ke (from english) vulture: lei che (mining vehicle) spider mine: lei (mine) goliath: ji qi ren (robots) science vessel: ke ji qiou (technology ball, or science ball) dropship: yun shu ji (transport ship) wraith: ying fei (invisible flyer) valkyrie: wa ke lei (they probably just say the english word) battlecruiser: da he (from japanese kanji for yamato, pronounced in chinese) Zerg: zerglings: gou (dogs) hydras: kou shui (spit), she (snakes, only used when going hydra mutas) lurkers: lurker (english), di ci (ground spikers) mutalisks: fei long (dragons) scourge: zi sha (suicides) queen: huan hou (queen), or queens in english defiler: xi zi (scorpions) ultralisk: niou (cows), da xiang (elephants) guardians: da long (big dragons), shou hu zhe (guardian) devourers: da long (same as above, basically upgraded muta), long xia (lobsters, theres a lot of wordplay here, guardians looks like crabs, so the high tier air units gets named after seafood, especially sinces mutas looks like shrimp), theres another name for devourers but I cant remember infested terrans: ??? Overlord: fan zhi (house, given because it serves the same purpose as a supply depot, which is also called house) special note: cracklings: kuan gou (rabid dogs) Protoss: zealots: cha cha ( for the sound they make when they hit you), zealot (english) dragoon: long qi shi (dragoon) dark templar: ying dao (invisible blades) high templar: shan dian bing (storm soldiers) dark archon: hong qiou (red ball) archon: bai qiou (white ball) reaver: reaver (english), jing jia chong (armored bug) shuttle: yun shu ji (transport ship) observer: observer (english), fan ying (detector),OB (said like an abbreviation) corsair: hai dao (pirates) scout: scout (english) arbiter: zhong cai (arbiter) carrier: hang mu (carrier) interceptor: xiao fei ji (small planes) notes: MM will still be called MM, MM plus vessel will be referred to as SK, all buildings are usually refered to by their hotkeys, eg BB in terran would be a barracks, all static defenses (cannons, sunkens, bunkers) are called di bao (ground protector), antiair static defenses are refered to as fang kong (anti air, turrets, spores)

For example, citadel becomes VC. Core becomes BY. Science Facility becomes VI. So forth. When I first listened to Chinese stream, I kind of went WTF when they said stuff like "he's going VS/VC" to denote a standard PvZ build. its true for most of esports in china, everything is hotkeys simply because most of the games are not in chinese. In dota for example all the skills except for a few are referred to by their hotkeys, even though all of them have chinese translations. It has its benefits and downsides, the commentary is much less noob friendly, a newcomer would have no idea what the commentary is talking about since it requires knowledge of the game, on the other hand, growing players learn build orders much faster, if the build name is VS/VC, the hotkey quickly becomes ingrained in your head. The names also shows whats most important, referring to high templar by their most important spell (storm) and vultures as vehicles for mines shows the purpose of each unit.

Why dont they use the regular names? Is it about the sound?
