Pretty much brood war just minimizes out and then gives a windows error saying it has to close. (this isn't that stupid freezehack thing). This has been happening to me for a really long time and it happens to other people i know such as eriador, wisdom, oddy, and several others. I'm sure it happens to some others.
I have msged blizzard about this so much. they just tell u to defrag, reinstall bw, windows, etc. get rid of CD mounting tools such as Daemon tools and whatnot.
Basically I have tried everything, same bullshit, bw crashes very arbitrarily (although it has been constantly crashing these past few days).
Has anyone else encountered this problem that has found a solution for it? Any ideas on how to fix it? I am completely clueless on this one, my computer is fine, built it myself, everything is perfect except for this which is the biggest problem....
any help would be greatly appreciated

Someone posted that this could be due to BW not being compatible with hyper-threading processors, but that doesnt make any sense to me. However, this usually happens when I get MSN'ed during play, where BW minimizes and then disappears, with no error warning. I am also unable to restart BW until I restat my comp.
Recently I have been just turning off MSN and any other programs when I am playing, and it has helped somewhat as BW crashes much less.

control alt delete and see what programs are running in the background
|
intrestingly, today i had it the first time ever!
the game was over, and right when the stats should show up the game crashed with the windows error message. I was using Lasgo's Launcher (for the autoreplaysaver), so I thought it was the lasgo program which caused the crash, but it did for the first time ever, and on the same day you create this topic. (yes i read that you experience this some time already)

This might not help, but try deleting your bncache.dat file. Sometimes it gets corrupted and causes BW to crash.
|
it isn't msn for me (even though i have been running it recently). I usually use Trillian Pro which is a mix of aim/icq/msn/yahoo/irc, and it has happened when I was only running that.
I have tried closing every single program before (including background programs). Same thing.

If you actually end the BW process and not just .exe, you should be able to restart right away.

its called game.exe or . something i beleive. Its the same process for all blizzard games.

just happened again.
arggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg i was playing such a gg too.
i can't stand this

well this probably wont help but i just wanted to put it out here. I was having problems with brood war crashing everytime i played a couple of games or so and i didnt know the problem. Then my friend needed my cd-rom to do something involving his comp so i took mines out and gave it to him. Then i started playing brood war on my cd burner & after several games i noticed it didnt crash anymore. Well its been months now and i havent had that crashing problem since.

hell, I'll post my problem too: (it doesnt' really bother me since i paly with friends mostly, BUT!) Every coupla games by BW will just minimize and remove itself from taskbar (that's what the bottom thing is called, right?), giving absolutely no error message. The process is still running in the task manager, however taking up 0% CPU (which we all know is NEVER the case with BW). Now I run a no-cd launcher (the problem hasn't happened before 1.11b I think) with hyper threading (I think that makes 0 difference but I'll still mention it cause Mani said something about it). I can't start BW again without manually killing off starcraft.exe.. it's kinda gay though when it happens in long games .. =/ people have to drop me out once it happens too ! T_T

Sounds like the crash hack. Even if it's with your friends, you can't rule out practical jokes =)
To the original poster: Sounds like crash hack again (actually, a variation). There is a hack out there that allows an unscrupulous player to close remote BW clients with a custom error message of their choice. Maybe you're running into that, although updating your sound drivers certainly could help as well.

My friend has a really messed up cd. He used to crash all the time. He disabled his in game sound and now all is well. I don't know if that helps at all but it's just a suggestion. Alternatively, you could try a no-cd crack or something that might ameloriate any cd related possibility.
Edit: Lasgo's BWAC feature also causes spontaneous and random crashing every so often too.

I know these guys irl and i am pretty much their teacher. they're as anti-hack as it gets. it also happens when I 1v1 my bestest buddy and practice partner, he just has no reason to have them on his computer to begin with..
so it's pretty much 100% ruled out, and even then I have pinguin on T_T

Do you run Torrents while you play? If so, turn them off.

Haven't used bittorent since... before 1.11b! Maybe I should run them while I play!
heh, but for real what do I do T_T

Standard tech drill...
Using latest video and sound drivers? Protected against crash hack? (always running PenguinPlug or Chatlogger, or /o igw) What outside programs are running alongside SC?

i get it all the time, i just reboot once and continue

Okay try running first without either program for as many games as you feel comfortable (maybe 20 or so, it depends on how often you think you're crashing). If you're not crashing after this, go ahead and add in one program, play another 20 or so games, then add in the final program. Eventually you'll be able to deduce what the problem is. I used to have the same problem actually, but ever since using PenguinPlug/Chatlogger it hasn't happened again. I don't run Winamp when I play anymore either, which may also be contributing to the problem.

so... anyone up for 60 games? :D i'll try excal, thanks

I've pretty much stopped now I'm about 95% certain it was caused my computer overheating and I've started turning off my mozilla and opera before playing games, as well as using less heating in my room. (I started crashing shortly after norway became totally cold, which led to me using more heating. )
the next time I crash I'll insert that new fan of mine, haven't bothered yet though.

Hmm it's still crashing here occasionaly. It's usually pretty hot in my room, because I'm cold when I get home, so I turn op the heater a lot :p
My videocard was also overheated first time I got this pc, so I got a new one too. Maybe with me it's a heating problem as well ;x

Same fucking problem, some XP computers don't like to run old games. That what my technician told me, I agree with you FrinkX its really annoying when your playing a GG and it suddenly crashes
|
I had that kind of problems as well. When I canceled joining b.net it just freezed. Or bw would freeze when I wanted to save the rep file.
When I deleted some spyware problems, I don't have that rep-freeze problem anymore. And I just don't cancel joining b.net.

Everytime I get that error I just reghost my machine back to new fresh edition =] And it works for some months
|
if sc just minimizes and dissapears.. it's often due to a scratchy cd..

Yeah happens to me 2 but not with msn. If its what's happening with me you can push Ctrl+ alt + delete in Windows xp and CHeck if starcraft.exe is still running even though the game actually just shut down. It usually is if you are unable to restart bw. Mark it and shut it down. You should be able to restart it now without restarting the computer. Atleast this happens to me and i noticed this "bug?" by a coincidence.
