one of the most impressive scenes is still when giyom and maynard are behind him and can't believe how fast his hands are.
he was really an exceptional player at his time.

I'm here to bump!

Today, I discovered that Alias:Slayer actually is uploaded on YouTube. As for you who don't know what kind of movie this is, it's a documentary about a great norwegian player named Slayer that travel to Korea in 2001 to participate in the KBK-tournament.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

That was genuinely a great watch. All this was way before my SC-time and I love seeing how the raw passion in SC hasn't changed over the years. I wonder what Slayer is doing now.... :|

He was offered a contract, but didnt take it, because he wanted a safe education at home.
Then he had to serve the one year mandatory military service that norway has, and during that time, he bought a couple of poker books, and studied poker for a while, and I think he's making a good amount of money on it.

I THINK I saw him on the nordic poker tourmanent, but cant remember exactly..it was a while ago.

Btw, peetah, you didnt happen to get that information from the wow forums? I posted it a while ago on my warrior :D

Edit: Is ther any way at all to get a hold of those replays or the VODS from that tournament? Wanna see how they played back then.

Wow, this thread was from way before my time. Thanks for the bump, I'll check those videos out. But I was totally shocked when I saw a post by Maynard in the thread; I knew maynarding was named after a player, but it's really cool to see somebody that famous (now anyway) post on TL. I wonder if he still posts here.

Just a little extract from a Tillerman interview who seems to be good friends with Slayer:

...

There must be at least 4-5 ex professional gamers who have pulled in more than seven figures from poker. My good friend Kirderf (ex Broodwar WCG Champion) is one of them and in my opinion is one of the best and most consistent online players in the world, he certainly meets this criteria many times over. Other ex gamers who I know have had some success in poker are Elky, Rekrul, Nazgul, TheBusDriver, Ackbleh, Bushman, Lakerman, 4K.Kaj, NTT, RainKhan, Maynard, IceGod, Groinal, Daishi, Xds’Grrrrr, Nitemare and scores of others whose names escape me right now.

The skills that are transferable from gaming to poker are probably the qualities of obsession and dedication. You can’t reach the highest tiers of competitiveness in gaming without a regime of several hours of practice every day. The same dedication is required in poker. Another advantage for ex gamers will be the ability to multi task more naturally than non gamers thus enabling them to play more tables more easily and deal with multiple decision situations more competently.

One part of gaming that is not easily transferable to poker is the competitive angle, the feeling of being able to sit down at your game and “own” your opponent because you are better. This satisfaction of being able to see instant results is completely missing from poker and is something that I miss. I am also sure it is something that many ex gamers struggle with probably having contributed to them leaking thousands of dollars before it is programmed into them that this feeling can no longer be satisfied from poker.

Also, is there something in particular about Starcraft/Warcraft or can this be extended more generally to people who put lots of time in with computer games of other types? Would you recommend they try poker as something they might have natural aptitude for?

I am not sure how transferable the skills are because for every one gamer I can name that has managed the transition I can name ten others who either fail or struggle. I don’t recommend poker to anyone any more as I believe it is an incredible struggle and hardship for 9 out of 10 players who attempt it. I don’t want the likely outcome of my encouragement to be failure for that person.

Who do you regard as the most successful to crossover besides yourself and do they share similar attributes?

As I said above it is almost certainly Kirderf. We play virtually identical styles and I think have similar thought processes and approaches to the game. This makes sense as we have discussed and talked about poker strategy together for several years. He epitomises Discipline, the single most important skill for a poker player to master. One day I hope to achieve this level of discipline with no leaks from tilt or frustration whatsoever. I am getting closer all the time =)

Hey there, I stopped reading after page 7 but I just wanted to throw in a little.
To me Slayer was always the best. When I started Starcraft he used to be my idol and when I played with him he opened my eyes for new strategies and creativity. Not only do I have the same name but I also think he has somewhat an very similar approach. Unfortunately I think he has more talent than I do, be it Starcraft or Poker.
He was never the person to play the most but he was always one of the great inventors in strategies within Starcraft. He used Strategies long before Replays were available and years later people copied his style.
I think due to the long hours I put in Starcraft I was able to spot real talent in a very accurate fashion. I once played Gamei vs Iloveoov when he used to be a Zerg player and I thought to myself that he will be an upcoming star. I had that feeling maybe around 10 times total and all of them became world wide top players either within months or years after I discovered them. Nontheless Slayer struck me as a one in a million talent.
Some people are just special and I don't know about his qualities besides Starcraft and Poker but when it comes to these games hands down, he is amazing.
There is just a certain approach some people have, that makes them different, they see behind the mechanics and find their own way how to play the game.
When there is no further information available, those people will be on top no matter how big the competition.
Slayer is not the best in Starcraft anymore and not on top in Poker either, just because there are people working / playing much more but nevertheless when you will give him a new game and time he will definitely be on top of it, just because he has the creativity and right mindset to succeed.
I dunno if this is private but the I met him last year in Monte Carlo for the European Poker Tour Finals and he won big 7figurish and is well set for life, furtheremore I heard his GF is pregnant so he might be a father by now.

Would be amazing to see him back in Starcraft 2.

Fisheye thank you so much for your information.

The things you say about Slayer is the same feeling I got the first time I saw him move his hands around the keyboard and the way he talked abou the game, etc.

Back then, I don't think no1 had that hand speed that he had... I mean Grrr... was the best of the best at that time and he was standing behind him going "Wow, this kid is so fast"...

But it seems like all the old schoolers turn into poker stars, more $$$$$$ I am guessing right?

Does Slayer still play tho at all? Iccup or Bnet?

but fisheye... do you think he still can do what he did in '01? not to take away that he is a phenomenal player.. but there are very few "old" gamers who still bring it as much as the young ones. (want to have a harsh contrast? Flash-Much // White-Ra-..JF e.g.)

white-ra was never top of the crop till like 2005 or so (and he was never the best gamer), that's a very bad comparison. Mondragon is a relatively 'old' gamer these days and he's still doin good. If old gamers never quit this game they would've still been on top I think. Exception are maybe some players who were succesfull only because of their unpredictableness and creative strategies. But most old gamers back in the day also had basic macro skills :p
I wish all these legends still played.

I speak about the foreign scene here. In Korea, it's obviously different..

of course the oldies profit from their long term accumulation of skill and sustainment and there are some exceptions who still beat the youngsters (as stated in my previous post). but statistically you don't have the reaction time of a 15 year old at the age of 25 and thus making it hard for you to still keep the pace. it's experience vs. young dynamics. but we've been all over this before..

after all it was just a theoretical question of mine if slayer can still bring the same performance as in '01 if he tries really hard.. would be interesting to know but rather unlikely that we will see it, not even in sc2. if he is indeed father now he won't have time to nerd sc2 24/7. the only thing possible would be a near empirical approach (hypothetically) to measure the time of all the well known foreigners which they invest in sc2, consider their age, and see how succesful they are with what they invest. you'll then get a cost/effect figure and... whatev... it's only the mathematical version of what fisheye already said... slayer would prolly still have the highest figure as a player "one out of a million".

Well, one small comparsion might be WCG Nordic 04

Slayer stopped playing somewhere around 2001 or 2002 I guess? And he still came back 2 years later, with little or no practice at all, and ended up #3 in the norweigan qualifiers. He'd probably won, but they had to shorten the LB finals to Bo1, and the WB finals to bo3, because they had to catch the flight back to norway (it was held in Sweden). Had it been Bo3 and Bo5, Slayer might've even gone to WCG finals that year.

I remember that, I watched the nordic WCG closely as I was rooting for my (TE) teammates (that time being Gos-Chaso, a swedish terran who retired shortly thereafter iirc, and Arcneon, whom you might now as today's iG.Madclaw, a finnish protoss). I was amazed at Slayer's play, having only heard about him before (2002 was before my time of online SC), knowing he didn't practice at all those past two years...

He is some real talent, I tell ya

Yeah I know all about Chaso and Arcneon. I've met Chaso several times at offline events, and Arcneon played in our team as a smurf a couple of times back in the days orzhady(TE) knew him pretty well, so he did it as a favour ;O Don't know if he was in (TE) at the same time as you?
