[Tutorial] How to Play BW Without a CD By DeSu
edit: ugh disregard this, turns out you can already do this due to the patch. sorry
Hello TL, After joining TL I was thinking of ways I could contribute. Since I am new to BW I knew I couldn't really write an article on strategy and I can't translate Korean articles since I don't know Korean. So I decided to write this tutorial on how to create a disc image of Brood War and successfully mount it with Daemon Tools.
I'm sorry if most of you already know this and I am pointing out the obvious, but hopefully this may be useful to some people who are not as experienced with this software.
Note that this is completely legal so as long as you do not distribute your copy of Brood War disc image that you burn.
If you are unfamiliar with what a disc image is, a disc image is basically the same thing as a CD, except it is stored virtually on your computer's hard drive. So basically you have a CD on the computer without actually physically having the disc. Disc images come in a variety of formats. The format we will be using is .iso.
What we then do with this disc image is mount it on a virtual drive. A virtual drive is like another fake disc drive (so you can basically have two CDs on your computer at once; one that is in your real disc drive and one on your virtual drive). What Daemon Tools Lite does is create this virtual disc drive.
So here we go: 1. First of all, visit the following link and download the program Daemon Tools Lite v4.30.4. It is completely free. Be sure you click the correct download button, NOT the Start Download button at the top. + Show Spoiler +http://www.disc-tools.com/download/daemon 2. Once the download is complete, run the .exe file that you downloaded and follow the instructions provided in the installer. WARNING! This installer has a lot of adware, for example it might ask you if you want to install their toolbar and also if you want to set their website to your homepage. Make sure to double check each step and to only select the necessary options. On the part where it asks you which components you want to install, you can safely uncheck all the options except for the core files. It's all useless anyways.
3. After step two, you may need to reboot. Whether you need to or not, once that is done you should have a Daemon Tools icon on your taskbar in the bottom right. If it is not there, go to where you installed it (default is C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Lite on Vista) and run daemon.exe.
4. Next we have to create a disc image of BW. You can do this with a variety of programs. I personally used Nero. Here is a free program I found that you can create disc images with: + Show Spoiler +http://www.lucersoft.com/freeware.php Download LC ISO Creator, extract the files and run the program. Insert you Brood War CD into your computer and select from the drop down list the drive it is in. Another window should pop up asking you where you want to save the .iso file. The program will then begin creating the .iso.
5.Once it is done, right click on the Daemon Tools icon in the taskbar, select Virtual CD/DVD Rom --> Device 0: [ X ] --> Mount Image. Then go to where you saved the .iso and Daemon Tools should mount it. If you did this correctly, you should now be able to play Brood War with this disc image!
To double check, go to My Computer. There should be a new disc drive with Brood War in it. Note you can also mess around with the settings and have lots of disc drives. I usually create three virtual drives: one with Brood War, one with Starcraft and one spare in case I want to mount anything else.
If you ever want to uninstall these programs, just run the .exe file you downloaded for Daemon Tools and select Remove. For LC ISO Creator, just delete the extracted files.
I hope this was helpful, and if you need any help feel free to leave a post on this thread or PM me. I'll try to get back to you asap.
Cheers, DeSu

This would have been an useful guide if blizzard didnt release a better way theirselves.
You can just copy "install.exe" or something from the cd to the BW folder and rename it to "BroodWar.mpq".
Voila

nice effort but actually you can do it without CD emulation ^^; It was a feature added in a patch:
patch.txt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - patch 1.15.2 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feature Changes
- StarCraft and StarCraft: BroodWar no longer require the CD while playing the game. To play without the CD, please follow the following instructions:
- Windows Users: - Make sure you have "Hide extensions for known types" unchecked under Explorer Folder Options. - If you own only StarCraft, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "StarCraft.mpq". - If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "BroodWar.mpq".
- Mac users: - If you own only StarCraft, copy "StarCraft Archive" from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder. - If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy "Brood War Archive" from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder.

^ are totally right =( This would have been useful a few years ago. Still WELCOME TO TL!
A even faster way to install...starcrack installation! Comes with ICCUP and everything =)

You can burn an .img file directly from nero and run that with deamon tools. And hate to say it because you put effort into this but this is really old news. Basically every pirated game require deamon tools and everyone knows how to do this =p
And yeah it's also obsolete due to patch.
Nice try though!
|
you can also download bw from the iccup website too which requires no CD or anything
but ya lol nice try
|
nice try..but yeah, we learn something new everyday.
|
you can also register your cd keys at battle.net and then download the client from the website and it requires no cds. same with d2 and wc3.
im sorry you spent time typing 10 paragraphs lol
|
It's not entirely useless - if people without a CD want to watch older replays, they'll need some sort of no-cd option.
|
or you can upload your cd key and then get the download, which is cdless xD
poor guy
@symmetry there is a bw patcher that can change your patch (and does not effect your cd option i think)
|
Aww, such a waste of time

I'm well aware, but versions prior to 1.15.2 will require you to use your CD unless you use a patcher that has no-cd functionality (the only one I'm aware of that does this is BWAIDowngrader, and it doesn't support every patch - there could be other patchers that support it but I'm not aware of them).

This was a fantastic failure of a post. Keep up the good intentions! :D

A waste of time but still really cool that people will look to contribute to TL in whatever way they can.

There is a feature that can let you view old replays i believe, if that doesnt work then there is a BW patcher that allows you to switch between teh patches you want.
