I sympathize (well I did before I read the rant anyway) with the OP, but he invited all the flames he got. The OP is insulting to people that are actually poor - it just abuses and takes the real meaning out of the word.

The whole "OHNOEZ TEH DEPRESHUNZ" rant is BS. Your dad QUIT his job, you said. QUIT. Someone willfully quitting their job (and not someone 'forced' into quitting by shady business practices like a lot of less fortunate people are) has nothing to do with the economy. If you have issues with it, maybe you should discuss it with him and find out what his plans are - he probably has some. Or are you two now on bad terms because he took your phone away?

"Last part is that I was upset with getting my phone taken away for "work purposes" simply because the fact that my dad is going to lose his phone with his job and he is taking mine yet he will still have no job. Therefore I saw taking my phone away as a stupid strategic action that gave no gains to anything. If it was fore somewhat useful purposes, I would have gladly given it up to help the family."

When you are out of work, a cell phone is a strong weapon in your favor. It can be used to reach you at all times, no matter where you are. Looking for jobs is not something that is done sitting at home on the internet. You are out and about all the time touching base with people, trying to meet up with old and new contacts, trying to get your name and face out there. So a landline is a liability. When someone calls you, it could be important - so important that it could provide you with stable income for the next several years.

If you're so willing to help your family, you'd probably have the sense to realize that your dad needs your phone, and you don't.

QFT. My company (building construction) has forced me to work 10days out of town, and 4 days intown for the last few years now, and let me be one of the first to tell you that it is really horrible to constantly be away from the things you love and care about. Family and friends, your spouse, and everything you worked towards and purchased. It's like all this stuff I have now doesnt really feel like it's mine, and that im really only visiting my apartment, and it's back on the road again.

Now imagine being away for 3-4 months at a time, out to sea or overseas. I always laugh a little when civilians complain about having to be away from home for a few days, or a week.

Patrolling Lake Michigan must be tough.

Yes, because obviously I have never ever been in another billet. Nope. Only ever been here. Never on a 378', 270', 210', 178', etc. PATFORSWA? Whats that?! C-Schools?! SAR School for a month? Whats that?! ADC for 2 weeks?! BTM and BTO school? Chiefs Academy?! Shoot.

Never have to move every three or four years, or whenever I advance. Nope. Guam? Alaska?

The CG has billet selection the easiest of any branch. You notice I included all military branches in my statement, correct?

Anyways, if you think civilians even have 5% of the hardships faced compared to servicemen, well, you must be seriously mis-informed. The whole point to it, was that I find it hilarious the hyperbole of the situation civi's always espouse. OMG I have to be away for 2-3 days, whatever shall I do?!!

so is it difficult?
I hear lake michigan has some pretty dangerous waves

aegraen you can't possibly understand why a father would want to quit a job where he has to travel away from home all the time?

you can't even come up with theoretical explanations?

lolol, I'm kidding. The kid makes me want to drill a hole through his temples, but he's just a stupid, awkward, and spoiled teenage kid. He's not some sort of abhorrent dipshit straight from the depths of Auschwitz or something like that.

He just needs a swift kick between the legs that will hopefully help his balls to drop and just grow up a little, that's all.

I'm keeping him honest. He's in the Coast Guard Officer Candidate school which means he's not risking anything, but he gets a great education out of it and he'll likely get an analyst job once he's done. All of that is perfectly fine and he is serving the country, except he romps around here and claims military authority as if he knows what it's like to serve in Iraq, and he doesn't.

Nobody I know in the military carries themselves like he does and the general rule of thumb is people who are the most gung ho in public have done the least.

I'm not an Officer, nor would I want to be. Secondly, where have I said anything about knowing what its like serving in Iraq? If I wanted intimate details and knowledge (Which I have done, but I don't advertise it on this site), I'd talk with my Uncle who served multiple tours over there before he retired as an Army MP.

I get my education from TA which every enlisted person can get. I also receive college credits for attending C-Schools, Advancing, and other related activites.

If you dont think in the eyes and mind of a servicemen that civilians complaining about having to be away from their family for a few days is hilarious given the context that we are in (You do know the CG is a SEA-GOING service right?). I was merely pointing that out.

Obviously all service is hard. American is a lot easier on the people in comparisons to others.

It does have redeeming qualities in relation to just having a job that requires constant travel. But are you honestly trying to get into a discussion of one job being harder than another?

Nope. Just saying I find it hilarious civs complain about having to be away for a few days. Nothing more, nothing less.

Quitting a job? During this recession? I call bullshit. He probably suspected he and others were likely to be laid off at some point, and he probably didn't want to be strung out and then amputated like a decaying limb (like my poor papa was in May), so he chose to beat them to the punch.

Also, you're pretty much, how do the kids say, a turd sandwich. Your house has lost it's main source of income, your dad is unemployed and probably holding back his anxiety from everyone, but you just blog about how you lost your precious cell phone... You selfish little bastard.

Get a job and pay for your own cell. Of course, you'll need to develop some work ethic at some point.

EDIT: Too harsh? Too much? Shall I go for the more generic "el oh el that doth sucketh"?

Glad I can contribute to your entertainment. Can I charge like 5$ a hour or something? Seems a reasonable fee.

In this economic climate, and with no other job lined up? Nope. Family goes before yourself. That's what it means to be a parent and a husband.
