I try, I really try.
I'm on ICC, I downloaded the maps, the launcher, the wtf latency plugin but I don't get it.
It takes half an hour for me to start a game, where:
1. I lag 2. I lose in 3 minutes
I don't understand the way it works (not the game, bnet, iccup).
At least when I played wc3, I had a fucking ladder, where I could just click "Play" and get games. SC is just a pain in the ass to learn, I don't know how you guy proceed to actually PLAY but it seems that I missed the tutorial somewhere...
Fuck this

Fuck this your fucking right, i play wc3 and when i started playing fucking starcraft i sucked dick and wanted to quit too. but at least i didn't blame lag and actually took the time to figure out what the fuck was going on

Sorry about your luck, but seriously, if you don't have the patience to get ICCUP running, you likely wouldn't play too many games before quitting anyway.

|
i have ICC running, I'm on it now, it just takes forever to have ONE game.
|
just click "join" and then doubleclick a fucking game.
whats so hard?
protip: join only D games in the beginning otherwise they kick you......geez
|
No it doesn't, just ask in channel and you'll get it, or even better - host it yourself if you're capable.
|
in my experience, iccup has made finding actual 1v1 games much easier than before
you've got plenty of options: 1. hosting your own game 2. joining another game from the list 3. spam channel asking for someone to host
|
he's probally lagging hard. ayou probally need to forward port 6112.
|
I ask you to consider the possibility that it is you, and not StarCraft, that sucks.
|
So its you and your net that suck not starcraft?
|
Nah I'm not lagging. I can't join most of the games because we must be several people trying double clicking all game names like mad which results in games full all the time.
I can join when someone gives me the game name // password but you guys need to realize this is very boring to do. I know I'm whining but hey, that's my right !
Also, about D- I'm seriously beginning SC. I have basics build orders vs P or vs Z. I know my micro sucks but I've been watching enough VODs to know my basics. I get COMPLETELY crushed by any opponents.
It's like I'm doing my 7th SCV and I'm being Reaver dropped. Also, vs Zerg, I always face 5 pool which I have a lot of trouble countering.
Finally, vs Protoss, I have good timing on my first tank + walling to defend the first zeal + goons but I lose a lot to 2-gates. Just 8 dragoons going rampage in my base all the time, destroying the walling.
So hard.

I'm pissed.
I never blamed my loss on SC. I'm ready to lose 600 hundred games, NP.
I'm just saying the "meta" game is not easy to put your hands on (bnet, ladder, custom games, latency, firewalls, etc.)
|
when i host i get games in like 4 seconds. the only problem now is winning
if you can't host forward your ports, it's worth learning so you can play certain other games online too.
|
eh, i don't understand what the difficulty is exactly with you and bnet. interface trouble?
|

What more could you ask for? I got the French joke......lol, I was about to type that but I could get banned.
but yeah, if you don't have the patience to learn to play SC then you're better off playing something else. Try geting the basics right against an AI. Then try getting it right over at iccup/bnet, but you'll get raped vs real guys...patience..really.
|
Play the campaign. Then play the computer. Then get the advanced AIs. Then try the even more advanced AIs that get free resources, or try Iccup.
|
true, starcraft is boring
|
The correct spelling would be "hungarian" if you want to retaliate and "go into that direction" LOL. Call me one full of prejudices, but crappy English grammar + massive rage and name-calling = instantly associated with being French. At least on teh interwebz. Tough luck, buddy.
|
Dude what the fuck. Of all the things you can whine about... you pick the single most insignificant thing. It's impossible not to find a game within 30seconds at D ranks. Possibilities:
1. You don't have AH enabled (type /ah in the chat room and check) 2. You join games advertised as D+/C-/C/C+/B- etc. 3. Your connection sucks. 4. You're stupid. 5. You're inexperienced as hell with games in general.
Have you seriously not played a game before where you have had to type game names to join? Or pick from a list of servers? Ever clicked on that button that says "Custom games" in Wc3? No? I'd bet it would take you 5 hours to join a server on Counterstrike if you'd ever try, cuz steam sucks, they don't have a PLAY button.
rofl. bullcrap.

In my experience, finding a D level game takes about 5 seconds on ICCUP. Hell, just create the game yourself and people will join almost instantly (as long as it's the MOTW).

if no one joins your games take a little time to figure out which maps are actually played
out of the selection of maps of the week it's usually only 2-3 maps that people will actually play on because the others are shitty 2v2 maps or eclectic imbalanced maps that somehow enter the rotation

If you only got your 7th SCV as the reaver is dropped, you're seriously doing something wrong whether you're counting the first 4 SCVs or not. At D- level, it's normal to get crushed by any opponent.

As for the complaints about not getting any games, as many people have said, go to portforward.com, forward your ports and create games on your own using icc motw maps. If you don't know what they are, type /motw in icc and you'll get a list. If you follow this, people will join your games in a matter of seconds.

I hate reading these comments about him being stupid and stuff like that. First of all, it seems like most of you have read through the lines and didn't understand one thing.
He is complaining that in Starcraft it is hard to get into a position to actually play a game against some opponent.. That is right. It doesn't take 30 minutes to join a game at D level of course, but I know, as a person who can't host a game it takes some time to join one.
He even mentioned - he double clicks on the games and can't get into the game. Doesn't this sound familiar to you? Now, the best option for him of course would be to be able to host a game. If it is impossible there's one thing about bnet maybe he doesn't know. You have press join, double click some game and if it doesn't work in 10 seconds, go back to channel and press join again. Because this way you will get a fresh list of games and have a better chance to find an empty game.
And of course at the begining join just D/D- games, this is something you probably know already. Hope that helps.

since you claim to be D- and are having trouble getting iccup running, i suggest just playing some 2v2v2v2 BGH games or 3v3 BGH games on USEast. Not only is finding a game worlds easier, but it gives you the opportunity to work on broad fundamentals (macro/keeping your money at 0, unit composition, positional considerations, some micro, handspeed, hotkey comfort, basic multitasking). Moreover, they are SUPER fun especially if you have a friend! Once you've played a hundred or so games of that, your brain will feel much more relaxed and you'll probably be able to reach D+ with much more ease.
in other words, be glad you're having iccup troubles! go play some fun games so that you can take a break from your issues , bash some scrubs, AND improve!! :D
|
can you beat a computer?
what i recommend you do is get a pro replay of each of your matchups. you play terran, so obviously get a TvT, TvZ and TvP. in each of those games, assuming both of the players play standard, write down the terran build order. then, go into single player and execute this build order against a computer. if you do it perfectly you will have no trouble maintaining a D record. terran is one of those races where you seriously can win games just by macroing hard, so a great way to start is to just memorize a build order.

But non-motw maps that usually attract a lot of people are python and destination, and you could probably get away with blue storm, othello, heartbreak ridge, and neo medusa. But don't make it on LT or some random map in the mappack.

I'm confused, you have the internet capabilities to play wc3 w/o lag but not to play starcraft? The set-up can be a bitch (especially if you're not computer oriented) but it's not particularly brutal. Can someone explain to me what forwarding my ports means? What are my ports, I honestly have no idea what that means but I would like to be able to host games

Try turning off lag latency. It is nice, but for some people it causes gigantic lags. Of course most people will refuse to play with you if you turn it off (because this affects their "uber D+ micro"), but there is a chance that the lag will end.
|
If you think it sucks and are so negative no one needs you here. Quit, I don't think people are concerned about some guy who can't play SC. Want to get better? Don't whine, go to Liquipedia and play games. Simple, amirite?

But on-topic tho. Thank you very much to the people who understood my frustration and gave me information about Starcraft Bnet, ICCUP, BGH etc.

I'm someone motivated, you judge me because I'm a WC3 player ? I watch the OSL, the MSL, the PL Finals. I play on Liquibet, I download replays, I play on hamachi with friends, I obs the games with better players to learn.

How to host games on ICCUP:
1. Go into your router GUI by typing it in your browser, it's usually 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1
2. You may need a username/password, these usually come in the box with the router on a peice of paper or in an instruction guide that came in the same box. If you can't find it, ask your dad or mom :3.
3. Locate the security settings/port forward/open ports, the router GUI is different for each supplier so if you have a hard time finding it, google.
4. Open port 6112 TCP/UDP for your PC. To check your IP address follow these steps: i. hit windowskey+r ii. type cmd and press enter. iii. type in ipconfig, locate your local IPv4 address, that's it.
5. Log onto iccup, do a /motw and pick a map you like.
6. host a game, I use the title "1:1D motw no r"
7. ???
8. Come back to teamliquid and whine about 1a2a3a.

I actually agree with you, I get very annoyed with trying to play SC since there's basically no way in hell to get decent practice (unless you can speak Korean).

Lol pussy
StarCraft is really fucking hard, yes, but don't you dare say it sucks.
The automated matchmaking thing in WarCraft 3 pisses a lot of people off. There's a lot more freedom with being able to choose your opponent.
I figured out joining games is a waste of time on ICCup. I always just host my own, because other people's lag, fill up too fast, ban for stupid reasons, all only play Python.
Also, judging from your post, you picked Terran to start with as a race. I, and a lot of others personally find Terran the hardest
I know everybody suggests this and it gets really annoying, but try playing Protoss. Then you can just 1a2a3a over all terrans D+ and lower : D. *dodges shoe thrown by angry Protoss player*

Well I can see you are very frustrated, and that is very common among new players. How long have you been playing? You said you were just beggining and you are D- already.
Before I begin, Please go to the stategy section and go to the begginer section and read and understand the concepts presented there, including DAy[9]'s podcasts.
Here is some advice that helped me. Also TL.net search "guide to self improvement." Alot of what I am going to say is from that guide. Finally. use Liquipedia.
1) Do not complain. Do not blog about it, do no go into a nerd rage session. I found that it only hurts, and weakens you.
2) You just started. You need to actually play some games, and for the lag thing, just google starcraft portforwarding, and the link to portforward.com (usually the first one) will have a 6/5 star guide as to how to do it properly. Then you host your own games, and let people join. This is a very fast method. You should also find some friends that play sc, or join a clan. Having people who you can discuss starcraft with regularly really helps you improve.
3) VODS will not get you nowhere. Yeah you can analyze army positioning and little micro moves, but you can not see everything, and I found that it was hard when the Korean commentators are screaming "RIBARIBARBIA GGGGGGGG." I got too excited, and maybe you are too.
4) Watch replays of your favourite players, with a learning mindset. Analyze the strategy, the building placement, and the build order that goes along with the stategy. For example, I recently watched many White-RA replays and learned I was executing Corsair/Dark templar all wrong. Also, sometimes they build is different in different situations, as you must react to what your opponent is doing, or because the features of the map do not allow/allow certain plays
5) Play with a learning mindset. For example, I just recently got pwned in a PvT by a friend because he killed almost all my probes. Why? because my defence was not adequate enough. Now I learned that I must build either cannons or leave some units at the bases in order to protect my workers.
6) Play alot. This is a very practical game, and the only way you can learn is through practice. 7) When you read things, make sure you are understanding why they say the things they are. Sometimes, you will learn something, and then not do it in game until you experience a severe loss because you did not do it in game.
8) Have fun with it. You will find losing is fun to, because you will say "oh my god, that was a sick strategy" or, "jeez that guy has some good macro" or something. If in the end after following all of this, you still hate this game, then by all means quit. For me, this is a huge hobby, and not every has to like it, but please, for your own sake, try some of the things I have presented.

<3 thanks !

You should also find some friends that play sc, or join a clan. Having people who you can discuss starcraft with regularly really helps you improve.

There are a few ICCUP channels like that but they were all sleepy when I went there.
My 6112 / 6114 is forwarded at home, I cant do that at work. join channel op irc on iccup

I've also found that finding a better player who can game with you and show you the basics is a very good way to improve. You may think that you're following the build orders well and everything, but a better player will be able to give you a basic sense of timings and game logic (the REASON behind the build orders).
I'm not a great player myself, but I'd be willing to help if you're interested You can PM me and we'll set something up.

I forgot one ,more thing:
9) You must think in game alot. Ex. "He is going 1 gate reaver against me, what do I do." repeatdly doing this will help alot.

Dude, i get on icc, host "1:1D MOTW" and in 10 seconds someone has joined, most of the time there is little lag, and since i play D players the matches are usually good(though i lose more then i win)

since you claim to be D- and are having trouble getting iccup running, i suggest just playing some 2v2v2v2 BGH games or 3v3 BGH games on USEast.
:D I fully endorse this.
It's how I got to D+
;D

So many racist pricks and idiots in this topic... it doesn't show a good side of TL very much. I'm ashamed. Where's the moderation when you need it?

lol, what? That's completely random, but I would say that they're only checking if you cross the border, not if you go near it.
What you're wearing and what you look like is irrelevant. :o

I definitely agree with the OP. But this is really only because the game is over 10 years old, they didn't plan it out well enough.

lol, whenever I host a game it fills within 10-30 seconds
