I've been lurking here for a while and it seems like a bunch of people have interesting tastes and can hold down a decent conversation, but I haven't seen a general thread for my favourite types of music. Hence this one.
To get things started, I thought I would run through a list of genres and bands that I have been enjoying recently (I encourage you to do the same if you'd like to contribute, although don't necessarily limit yourself to genres like I'm about to)
BLACK METAL - Some of the really old school Finnish bands seem to be making a resurgence, notably Beherit and Archgoat, both with new albums this year, both good. That style is really raw and possibly hard to listen to for people used to Dimmu Borgir/Keep of Kalessin, but I love it anyway.
Also, 1349 recently released a new album - im not as sure about this one, there seems to be a lot of filler and not too many actualy songs.
GRINDCORE - Arguably not metal at all, whatever. What's most important to me is that everyone who likes this genre immediately listens to Agoraphobic Nosebleed's new album, Agorapocalypse, RIGHT NOW (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0yINs95wGw - yes, thats a girl on vocals)
DEATH METAL - Many of the really legendary bands seem to have been quiet in recent months, although maybe i'm just not paying enough attention to them. Tech Death, especially from Canada, seems to me the most interesting part of the scene at the moment. I only recently found out about Psycroptic and i'm loving them, though.
Nile are due a new album.
On an entirely silly note, im going to see Aborted in June. EXCITED. I may even get a surgical robe and a bunch of fake blood and organs, which will no doubt attract worried glances and a possible court summons on the tube home, but whatever.
DOOM - Not so knowledgeable about this genre. Im open to anything, but a lot of the bands seem to use the slower tempo as a way of getting away with sloppy playing. Plus, its WAY popular where I live (London), to the extent that bands playing other styles get overlooked when it comes to booking live shows.
Nevertheless, the Japanese band 'Church of Misery' put out some good stuff. They're not as gloomy as their name suggests, and write tongue in cheek songs about serial killers.
POWER METAL - I find that most people initially like this genre and then tire of it after a few months. I guess Stratovarius' new record was fun enough, although I HATED Ultra Beatdown by Dragonforce.
THRASH - Dammit if only they would stop playing that stupid Metallica song in the intro for the Proleague. It's starting to get on my nerves.
Toxic Holocaust and Municipal Waste are the current flavours of the month for me.
So yeah, I hope people enjoy the bands I talked about and are able to contribute some of their own knowledge. Always good to hear about new stuff.
On a different note, if you are going to post in this thread, lets try and keep the elitism/arguments to a minimum. Im not going to make fun of anyone no matter what they post as long as they like it and act similarly.

God yeah, I just realised how much the title sucks. You can't change it on this forum apparently and I forgot to make it clearer when I was writing the OP. Ah well.
I'm more into symphonic black metal and white metal. I don't like the production values of kvlt black.
I like tech death and you forgot the greatest of them all: QUO VADIS!, Arsis is the shit too.
Doom -
Swallow the Sun Mael Mordha
Power Metal -
Dragonland is the best Avalon Freedom Call Secret Sphere etc.
Thrash -
The Absence is the best Lyzanxia
I'm more into Folk and Melo D.
Long live SuidAkrA!
Edit:
Here is Quo Vadis..../drool
The solo at 3:45 is freaking unbelievable. (Not that its terribly difficult, but the harmony, melody, and song composition to create a masterpiece is!)

Wow... I have one album of this band (Day Into Night), but it sounds nowhere near as good as this IMO. Bassist is JAWESOME
Yea, I used to be into all sorts of metal, but musical tastes have evolved and these days I only seem time to listen to some death metal, but mainly just prog tech death.
Favorite bands: Blotted Science
Necrophagist:
also like Quo Vadis, Arsis, Cephalic Carnage, Spiral Architect, Death, Atheist, Spastic Ink...
Only problem i really have with metal is that too many bands don't try hard enough and just release the same album over and over again.

Im glad I made this thread already
Hehe, yea they are awesome, but no one even comes to close to the pwnsauce that is SuidAkrA!
Listen and you shall be enveloped into folk greatness...hail!

Im not sure if either band has played in the UK though (ANb probably have). You lucky Americans are getting all the best grind bands recently. I mean, Discordance Axis? AMAZE.
All we get is ENT and Napalm releasing YET more albums of exactly the same

Let me know what you think about the two new vids I posted.
I listen majority of genres when it comes to music, but metal and it's sub-genres/categories are probably my favourites. Despite sounding quite harsh and brutal it's usually cathcy and fast paced.
These are some of my current favorite songs from metal genres.
Can't get much better than Iron Maiden for just normal straight-up heavy metal. Hallowed Be Thy Name = greatest metal song ever? Methinks so...
Not a big fan of death and thrash, but I've been listening to a lot of power and prog lately. Some good stuff. Dream Theater, Nightwish, Communic, Kamelot (ish) are all pretty good.
<3 Dissection Used to be one of my favorite bands like 5 years ago.
SuidAkrA seems pretty decent. I'll be checking out some more of their stuff. I'm normally not a huge fan of a lot of Folkish metal. It seems that it's be on the rise lately though... Good stuff reminds me of a toned down Black Metal a lot of the time though (folk metal in general that is)

I've honestly never heard of this band. It's pretty unusual to mix folk with Deathy style with solos and blastbeats, so props for that.
First vid was good until that pointless interlude with the shouted female vocals; that spoiled it a bit for me. Second video was really good. Bagpipes work pretty well actually (maybe not that surprising as I think they were originally created for soldiers marching into WAR \m/). Two songs isn't enough to judge a band on so I will try and find some more of their stuff.
