Sick. You sound like you know more than me, so you probably know these, but I am duty bound to recommend:

a) Peste Noire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLSUQYzqXZ0 HOLY SHIT VOCALS). Im totally gay for everything Neige has ever done. Amesoeurs and Alcest are amazing even if they aren't metal.

b) L'Acephale (http://www.myspace.com/lacephale). Because we need more pretentiousness in extreme music (they're good, don't get me wrong)

Syu is amazing, he even makes ultra cheese sound vaguely acceptable.

And Manowar are HYPE whenever they play live, although permanent hearing loss usually results. They should team up with Sunn0))) and give everyone perforated eardrums (TOTALLY WORTH IT)

EDIT: Also, please, please, please make some post about whatever the hell 'Emo-Violence' is. Sounds hilarious.

Nope. Sorry, metal threads are not allowed unless you include Disgorge (U.S)

Disgorge - Consume the Forsaken is the best brutal death metal album ever, so far.

Okay yeah, that's really good (drummer clearly has a third arm). Props to you sir.

But is it really better than Suffocation?

There was one specific year where I used to work for four or five guys who all loved this stuff, it used to piss me off so much to have to listen to this utter crap all day. Just my opinion

Okay, I'll try to come off not as harsh. I just don't get it, maybe you can enlighten me. If there's some allure to 80's metal, I totally missed it. I mean, it just sounds like discordant noise to me. There's all these long riffs with screaming and chaos and it's just so disordered and ugly. What is it about this music that you appreciate? It just makes me tense and anxious and want to punch something.

Well what appears to be chaos at first perhaps just needs to a closer look?

I enjoy metal because of the complicated rhythmic structures and melodies, and all the subtle nuances. Speed is good too. So much better than that boring ass put me to sleep 140bpm rock on the radio. So much more intrigueing

Well, for me at least, I only like the stuff I like now through listening to softer stuff for a number of years. Some of the things posted in this thread are almost songs of 'Metal for people who already like Metal'. It sounds silly but it takes getting used to the sound to pick out the elements of it; it also helps if you play an instrument to locate a fixed point in the song and work from there. I also find that this kind of music sucks unless you actually listen to it - i.e preferably with decent headphones whilst doing nothing else (or live).

Extreme music is often likened to horror films; its hard to explain why they are entertaining, but sometimes really discordant, harsh stuff just works.

Its okay if you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to like it

I don't think any BDM band can ever touch Suffocation :<

Well, it really depends on the metal you're listening to. Some 80s metal has almost none of the stuff that is likened in this thread. A lot of metal is melodic, with familiar chord progressions and choruses. Stuff like Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Stratovarius, and earlier Judas Priest are much easier on the beginner's ears than stuff that is mentioned in this thread.

A quick youtube of "power metal" will find you many examples. There's melodic stuff like Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Rhapsody of Fire, Angra, Blind Guardian, and Sonata Arctica, and there's the crushing and awesome stuff like Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, Bolt Thrower, and Vader.

Symphony X: A widely respected progressive/power metal band (kinda thrashy, maybe you won't like it)

Stratovarius: A Pioneer of Keyboard heavy Power metal

Hammerfall: Straight heavy metal

Rhapsody: Power metal

Actually a lot of metal is heavily influenced by classical composition, especially black metal and symphonic styles. It takes a finely tuned ear, and an appreciation for neo-classical and classical musicianship, composition, etc.

The problem with the general population, is they hear 'growl' or 'scream' and immediately think, they don't know what they're doing, or the music is too fast, or changes tempo too much, isn't as poppy catchy so they don't like it, but take it from me, a pianist and keyboardist, metal is the most diverse and most talented pool of musicians.

Give me the drummer from Quo Vadis, Kalmah's guitarist, Miseration / Ex-Scar Symmetry vocalist + Deadlocks female vocalist, and Janne Warmen + a good bassist, and the limitations is never in sight.

Truely great musicianship. (I started with Killswitch back when they were had the old singer, in fact I remember 'The element of one' like it was yesterday perhaps this will get you into metal also)

Oh god that Hammerfall song is too much lol. Im going to have to pretend to not like it whilst secretly having it on my ipod under an assumed name.

Another reason why so many adore this music is how diverse it is. It can be as happy or as sad, serious or light-hearted, political or carefree as the creator intends. It can also be possibly the MOST technically challenging music to play (Necrophagist, Spawn of Possession), or it can be as easy as you like so long as it's got meaning and integrity.

Mathcore is technically more difficult to play than tech death

Anyways, I think folk is the most challenging due to the vast array of differing instruments and the fact you have 6-8 people in the band. For instance:

Also; Dark lunacy POSSIBLY THE greatest band ever behind SuidAkrA!

I recommend EVERYONE to check out Dark Lunacy; you won't regret it...they have a four string quartet...simply amazing! (Plus I'm a pianist so...)

I just personally can't stand growling and screaming for prolonged periods, which is a pity, because often I'll hear a great instrumental, look more into it, and be sadly disappointed by growling and screaming vocals =S
