I know this might not be the best place to ask this....and yes i used the search function.....but all the stuff about WH was old. I was wondering if there are any people here that currently play the tabletop game. Either fantasy or 40k? I haven't played in like 8 years and was thinking about getting back into it.

Also this is like a 1 in a jillion chance....but maybe there are some people in North Cali that play this game? as i know finding players can be hard.

ps: dont slap women

I used to play it, but ever since the new set of rules was made official, I kind of stopped. Also, it's somewhat of a time consuming hobby. I played all the 40K races except Necrons and I have a Vampire army in WH Fantasy. What about you?

I actually decided to buy the starter set with my brother this year (40k), haven't played since...... I dunno, 5 years at least and I wasn't very into it then (WHFB back then).

DoW2 beta reminded me of how much I loved the warhammer background haha

http://www.dakkadakka.com is a pretty nice site in terms of competitive 40k (as well as having some sweet painting/modelling sections), it's like a waaaaay more political correct version of TL I guess.

Oh and I'm currently painting up a bunch of Eldar, but I suffer terribly from indecisivness - going from Orks (since they come with the starter kit, and I have an old 2nd edition starter kit I bought ages ago, with, you guessed it, more orks..), to Eldar, to now wanting to pick up some Sisters of Battle once I'm done with the Eldar..

I haven't played in about 10 years either. Computer gaming was just as fun and so much easier than measuring distances and rolling dice.

Painting/converting is fun tho, and the warhammer universe is lovely.. God damn expensive, however! :D

I played several years ago, but I really couldn't stand it. Games take FOREVER, so much dice rolling, always arguments over rules, and all that just to play in a tournament full of stinky nerds.

Of course, if you have a few friends who play and bathe regularly, it can be pretty fun. But we switched over to a game called Mordheim pretty quickly (made by the same people, but more of a small skirmish based game, with experience, treasure, leveling up, etc.).

It costs way too much and takes too much time I do have a small Blood Angels army for 40k, and a dark elf army for fantasy

40k has a retarded ruleset. If you want a deep, strategical boardgame go with fantasy. if you want a game with fucking amazing fluff (backstory) but shitty rules, go with 40k.

Fantasy has good fluff too, but HOLY CHRIST the 40k fluff is just unreal. However when it comes to ruels, fantasy pisses all over 40k.

(i am slightly biased, i am a fantasy tournament player. However even basic comparison of the rule sets show that fantasy is far deeper.)

I've played for the last five years on and off with my scrappy dark elf army. I have alway loved the game and I definitely think you should get in to it again. It's really not that time-consuming (once you've done the bulk of the painting job) and it's alot of fun.
But remember: Fantasy>40K and wood elves are gay.

Have fun playing!

So true, the fantasy rules are just on another level completely.

Most of the opinions I've seen are actually the opposite - IE Fantasy lacks depth, 40k has depth.
In addition, the current Fantasy balance seems fucking AWFUL - something like half the total armies at one of the recent big events were Demons, with the majority of the remaining half playing Vampire Counts or Dark Elves..

Of course, I don't have much personal experience to back this up and I prefer the 40k universe so I'm biased ~_~

EDIT: UK GT results for WHFB:
UK GT Final players are drawn from the more succesful players of three separate UK GT events called heats. Special characters were allowed like usual. No composition scoring.

Here's the top10 results of the 2009 final tournament:

1. Andy Isherwood - Daemons
2. Fabio Panicucci - Daemons
3. Fabian Quinn - Vampire Counts
4. Ella Bonucci - Daemons
5. Tom Mawdsley - Daemons
6. Phil Manwaring - Dark Elves
7. Eddie Eccles - Daemons
8. Neil Peckett - Daemons
9. Adam Hall - Dwarfs
10. Russ Veal - Warriors of Chaos

For those not living in the UK, they held the 40K GT finals this weekend.

If you are unfamiliar with the event, they have 3 Heats held in the fall and they take the top players to then go onto the finals held this weekend.

It is a 6 game GT, at 1500 points, and they draw players from all over Europe.

Chaos now and forever, although i haven't played in 4-5 years, Khorne ftw?

Nid and necrons are the only other respectable races ^ ^

everyone else is gay, THAT'S right i called Tau and their Rail gun gay.

dark eldar used to be able to cross a table first turn and get melee strikes in XD

everyone else is a gayer version of the afore mentioned, and orks in space has always been a huge wtf moment for me.

To be honest...i dont think its that time consuming. I mean im not going to buy 2k points all at once. Ill buy a regiment at a time...assemlbe/paint...then another regiment etc...if i play fantasy im going with Lizardmen for sure...skinks with blowpipes just get me hard....If i go with 40k...im kinda undecided...maybe necrons...i like their style.

Inc do u really play Tyranids lol?

Also...yes the games can take a long time...i dont really like 2k plus point games that much anyways....i like little stuff like 1.5k and under fun games.

The "new" rule's melee system is just ridiculous and IMHO nerfs melee units far too much. There were some other minor issues I don't remember off the bat.

If you haven't played 40K yet, you should give it a try, but chances are that you will indeed feel a lack of in-depth strategy.

[DISCLAIMER] When I refer to the races below, I'm mainly speaking from a competitive point of view. [/DISCLAIMER]

I disagree. Necrons as they are seem like one big joke to me. They're the Protoss of WH40K. Every kid plays them and they take absolutely zero skill to master. Tyranids are nice, but they're pretty one dimensional, when it comes to a competitive level. I don't like Tau that much either, but they're not that easy to play, I have to admit. Hardest race IMO is Orks or standard Space Marines. Gayest races (in competitive play) are both Eldar races (especially Dark Eldar) since they can be abused like no other.

Although Chaos Space Marines are really cool, I had the most fun (and success) playing a totally standard Ultramarine Space Marine army. It's a real challenge because every other race has got so much "fancy" stuff on their hands while you have nothing but the standard Space Marine units. This forces you to play as effectively as anyhow possible, if you want to win.

Come on, if ANY race in 40k is protoss it has to be the space marines That's definitely the "newbie" race! I'll agree that pretty much everyone seems to think Necrons are completely worthless/boring in their current version.

I used to play it all maybe 10 years ago. Warhammer Fantasy (as orks originally, then skaven, then chaos) and 40k (Blood Angels originally, then later Eldar), Bloodbowl (Wood elves originally, then Chaos, then Humans), Necromunda (Gang Esher), Warhammer Quest, as well as a little Mordheim (skaven) and Gorkamorka (uh, orks I suppose. were there anything else?). I also had a few test games of Epic and Space Hulk, but they never really appealed to me all that much. I quit it some ten years ago though.

This easter, I was visiting my family cabin in the countryside, and, having nothing to do there since there's no power, few people and the weather was pretty shitty, I dug into my old mags and comics I had laying about. In the pile, I found some old White Dwarf magazines, (which are Games Workshop hobby mags if you were unaware) which brought on lots of nostalgia from back when I used to play it.

When I got back, I made a few calls, and sure enough, the game club thing that we had going back those 10-15 years ago was still going strong with a lot of the same members. I'll be taking a trip to meet up with them tomorrow probably, to see how the state of things are, and how stuff has evolved.

Anyhow, yea. About the topic.

After I got back, I picked up the Fantasy Core rulebook plus a Vampire Counts army book and a basic regiment of skeleton warriors at the local imports, fantasy, gaming and nerd stash-shop. Been cutting and gluing them together the last couple days, and I'm really looking forward trying my hand at painting again. I'm not really back into the entire thing like I was way back when, but depending on wether or not I get back in touch with the old gaming gang and my enthusiasm lasts, I imagine I'll be spending a lot less time in front of the screen, screwing my eyes over on something else than porn.

The only reason why Space Marines are the "newbie" race is that they are GW's main race. I'm pretty sure beginners actually fare better with Necrons than with Space Marines. While it may be true that Space Marines are well armoured and have high toughness, this all does not mean a thing when you see what arsenal of weapons other races have. Also, Necrons share all of the Space Marine's strengths and even more (especially with their regeneration ability) plus their firepower is even more devastating.

I use to play 40K, collected some high elves for fantasy but they were kinda pansy and I didn't like the universe as much. I have a bunch of dark eldar, space marines and tyranids. Mostly tyranids, but most of my friends played fantasy so I didn't really play much, I guess I was mostly collecting and painting.

Yea, I picked up vampire counts on impulse, not really knowing much about overall game balance and stuff. While i'm not too much fan of vampires in general due to all the dreadful teen-girl appeal it has, the tons of shambling, rotting zombies and other fun stuff more than balances it out. =p

back when I played originally, yea, we either played at the shop, or at any of our places if we had the space and time. it was easiest with the more basic board games such as bloodbowl and warhammer quest, since it takes less space, but as long as you have access to a decent dinner table, doing tabletop strategy works fine as well. and if that's too small, just buy some 2 feet by 4 feet wooden boards - a four by four board should be enough for small battles, but you'd might want 6 by 4 or 8 by 4 for full-sized games. anyhow, they're easy to store, and works great as a basic gaming surface.

Ya the part kinda sucks...all that twilight...girly crap...i like the dead rotting stuff also...well since i dont have any friends that play...i still havent decided on fantasy or 40k...and its been so long since i have played either...i will be a complete newbie again...and will have to learn all the rules...i know about the arcs and line of sight difference from the 2 games...and how fantasy u cant really move and shoot...and movement is different amoung the races in fantasy...unlike 40 k....

im kinda leaning towards fantasy and lizardmen...cuz if i end up not playing...they would be what i want to paint/collect......

grrrr i cant decide fantasy or 40k

Onnings, you picked well, in the current release vampire counts are amazingly over the top. basically THE best army. Daemons give them some compotition (same with DE's) but vamps are just fucking unreal with all their toys.

let me guess what race u play XDXDXD

INc doesn't play ( probably) Nids are simply what the Zerg were based off of, so no nids = no zerg
and no zerg = no iNc

and by gay in my previous post i meant cheesy.

eldar were abusive but they used to have a problem dealing with chaos ^ ^

Did they really nerf melee? because if they did... lets just say its' a good thing i don't play anymore

This thread makes me want to start WH over again really bad, but I don't know yet where to take the time from. This is mainly because I use like 4+ hours or more to paint a single miniature. I might post some pictures of my Ultramarines once I get hold of my brother's digicam. Post yours too, I'm curious about your painting skills

Onnings, you picked well, in the current release vampire counts are amazingly over the top. basically THE best army. Daemons give them some compotition (same with DE's) but vamps are just fucking unreal with all their toys.

Yea, I've heard that they're pretty crazy as well, with the ressurection spell and whatnot.

Anyhow, I'll continue my cutting and gluing today, then probably start off some painting tomorrow. I'll try to post some pics of my fledgeling tries over the weekend, if I have the time for it. Don't expect much. =p

Yea, I used to use some abhorrent ammount of hours per model myself back then. I'm going to try to paint by the squad now though, doing ten skeletons in stages before going on to higher levels of detailing. Hopefully, it'll let me get an army painted up with a decent standard, instead of just a ton of finished heroes, half-painted squads, and the rest covered in undercoat. Guess we'll see how it turns out soon enough.

i used to play this back in high school.

i had a black templar marine army (this was when the monthly mag released rules for them to make them 'official') and bretonian army in fantasy.

i spend ages painting shits and went to my local shop to do battle with other geeks.

entered one local tournament, went 8 - 0 then got ass kicked by blood angel and tyrannid armies.

the next morning, i woke up and thought to myself, wtf is this asian guy doing spending his KFC slaving money on little minitures and go to places where fat white dudes talk to eachother about codex and shits?

i was down a few grands at least getting every freaking set of space marines in order to compete. I realise that gamesworkshop is fucking douche and is just outthere to make money on 14 year olds geeks.

Then i found starcraft.

the end.

You tell me about it. I've got around 15'000 points worth of WH40K armies in my basement + around 4'000 points worth of WH Fantasy. I don't know how many grands I spent on that, but it's a horrendous amount for sure. However, most of it is unpainted, so maybe I should get off my lazy butt and sell some of the miniatures I don't need anymore..

never played warhammer or any of those, but ive played loads of mordheim, played like 40 hours of it during easter with two friends :D
we've altered the rules like a million times and every time there's disagreement we just throw dice, really laid back and chilled out kind of playing, but man it's so much fun. =)

Yeah, Mortheim and Necromunda are really nice to play as well. Actually, I think I'm going to invite a friend of mine for some Necromunda this WE. Anyone playing Gothic?

mordheim is fucking god like, spent so many hours playing that with friends. Imagine a bunch of 14 year olds (8 of em) playing mordheim from 6pm to 6 am. Man those were the days!

I've played battle fleet gothic before, its fucking unreal but a problem is the player base TT so small

Hi.

Go with 40K

let me guess what race u play XDXDXD

INc doesn't play ( probably) Nids are simply what the Zerg were based off of, so no nids = no zerg
and no zerg = no iNc

and by gay in my previous post i meant cheesy.

eldar were abusive but they used to have a problem dealing with chaos ^ ^

Did they really nerf melee? because if they did... lets just say its' a good thing i don't play anymore

I collect tyranids and have since before scbw. I play with my friends.. nothing serious or anything but I love WH40k
