DoW2 beta reminded me of how much I loved the warhammer background haha http://www.dakkadakka.com is a pretty nice site in terms of competitive 40k (as well as having some sweet painting/modelling sections), it's like a waaaaay more political correct version of TL I guess. Oh and I'm currently painting up a bunch of Eldar, but I suffer terribly from indecisivness - going from Orks (since they come with the starter kit, and I have an old 2nd edition starter kit I bought ages ago, with, you guessed it, more orks..), to Eldar, to now wanting to pick up some Sisters of Battle once I'm done with the Eldar..

Of course, if you have a few friends who play and bathe regularly, it can be pretty fun. But we switched over to a game called Mordheim pretty quickly (made by the same people, but more of a small skirmish based game, with experience, treasure, leveling up, etc.).

Fantasy has good fluff too, but HOLY CHRIST the 40k fluff is just unreal. However when it comes to ruels, fantasy pisses all over 40k. (i am slightly biased, i am a fantasy tournament player. However even basic comparison of the rule sets show that fantasy is far deeper.)

In addition, the current Fantasy balance seems fucking AWFUL - something like half the total armies at one of the recent big events were Demons, with the majority of the remaining half playing Vampire Counts or Dark Elves.. Of course, I don't have much personal experience to back this up and I prefer the 40k universe so I'm biased ~_~ EDIT: UK GT results for WHFB: UK GT Final players are drawn from the more succesful players of three separate UK GT events called heats. For fantasy i played skaven...had around 2.5k...but sold that army years ago. I'm still thinking if i will get into fantasy or 40k...and suggestions? The "new" rule's melee system is just ridiculous and IMHO nerfs melee units far too much. There were some other minor issues I don't remember off the bat. If you haven't played 40K yet, you should give it a try, but chances are that you will indeed feel a lack of in-depth strategy. [DISCLAIMER] When I refer to the races below, I'm mainly speaking from a competitive point of view. [/DISCLAIMER] I disagree. Necrons as they are seem like one big joke to me. They're the Protoss of WH40K. Every kid plays them and they take absolutely zero skill to master. Tyranids are nice, but they're pretty one dimensional, when it comes to a competitive level. I don't like Tau that much either, but they're not that easy to play, I have to admit. Hardest race IMO is Orks or standard Space Marines. Gayest races (in competitive play) are both Eldar races (especially Dark Eldar) since they can be abused like no other. Although Chaos Space Marines are really cool, I had the most fun (and success) playing a totally standard Ultramarine Space Marine army. It's a real challenge because every other race has got so much "fancy" stuff on their hands while you have nothing but the standard Space Marine units. This forces you to play as effectively as anyhow possible, if you want to win.

That's definitely the "newbie" race! I'll agree that pretty much everyone seems to think Necrons are completely worthless/boring in their current version.40k army rankings: http://www.yesthetruthhurts.com/2009/03/my-40k-army-rankings.html 40k vs Fantasy: http://www.yesthetruthhurts.com/2009/03/fantasy-vs-40k.html

This easter, I was visiting my family cabin in the countryside, and, having nothing to do there since there's no power, few people and the weather was pretty shitty, I dug into my old mags and comics I had laying about. In the pile, I found some old White Dwarf magazines, (which are Games Workshop hobby mags if you were unaware) which brought on lots of nostalgia from back when I used to play it. When I got back, I made a few calls, and sure enough, the game club thing that we had going back those 10-15 years ago was still going strong with a lot of the same members. I'll be taking a trip to meet up with them tomorrow probably, to see how the state of things are, and how stuff has evolved. Anyhow, yea. About the topic. After I got back, I picked up the Fantasy Core rulebook plus a Vampire Counts army book and a basic regiment of skeleton warriors at the local imports, fantasy, gaming and nerd stash-shop. Been cutting and gluing them together the last couple days, and I'm really looking forward trying my hand at painting again. I'm not really back into the entire thing like I was way back when, but depending on wether or not I get back in touch with the old gaming gang and my enthusiasm lasts, I imagine I'll be spending a lot less time in front of the screen, screwing my eyes over on something else than porn.

I'm pretty sure beginners actually fare better with Necrons than with Space Marines. While it may be true that Space Marines are well armoured and have high toughness, this all does not mean a thing when you see what arsenal of weapons other races have. Also, Necrons share all of the Space Marine's strengths and even more (especially with their regeneration ability) plus their firepower is even more devastating.

back when I played originally, yea, we either played at the shop, or at any of our places if we had the space and time. it was easiest with the more basic board games such as bloodbowl and warhammer quest, since it takes less space, but as long as you have access to a decent dinner table, doing tabletop strategy works fine as well. and if that's too small, just buy some 2 feet by 4 feet wooden boards - a four by four board should be enough for small battles, but you'd might want 6 by 4 or 8 by 4 for full-sized games. anyhow, they're easy to store, and works great as a basic gaming surface.

Post yours too, I'm curious about your painting skills ![]() Yea, I used to use some abhorrent ammount of hours per model myself back then. I'm going to try to paint by the squad now though, doing ten skeletons in stages before going on to higher levels of detailing. Hopefully, it'll let me get an army painted up with a decent standard, instead of just a ton of finished heroes, half-painted squads, and the rest covered in undercoat. Guess we'll see how it turns out soon enough.

i had a black templar marine army (this was when the monthly mag released rules for them to make them 'official') and bretonian army in fantasy. i spend ages painting shits and went to my local shop to do battle with other geeks. entered one local tournament, went 8 - 0 then got ass kicked by blood angel and tyrannid armies. the next morning, i woke up and thought to myself, wtf is this asian guy doing spending his KFC slaving money on little minitures and go to places where fat white dudes talk to eachother about codex and shits? i was down a few grands at least getting every freaking set of space marines in order to compete. I realise that gamesworkshop is fucking douche and is just outthere to make money on 14 year olds geeks. Then i found starcraft. the end.

I've got around 15'000 points worth of WH40K armies in my basement + around 4'000 points worth of WH Fantasy. I don't know how many grands I spent on that, but it's a horrendous amount for sure. However, most of it is unpainted, so maybe I should get off my lazy butt and sell some of the miniatures I don't need anymore..
