A long long time ago, when Starcraft was first created, it was created for a reason. That reason was not to see who's micro was more godly nor was it to see how many strats come up. The reason was to have FUN. Before every game ( well alomost every game ) what comes up? gl hf.
But it seems that we have forgotten what HF means. It means HAVE FUN ppl. Starcraft is plagued by ratings and 'how do I kick that guys ass?' questions. Grim faced youths playing hours a day to get those extra points on ICCUP, but forgetting to have fun.
I think the reason for this post is that a few days ago a friend and I had a PVP battle. Now Protoss is neither of our main races, so it was really a laid back melee. The problem is that the game kicked ass! Every unit except maybe a Dark Archon was present. There were reaver drops and DT's, Storms and corsairs, Carriers and Recalls. The match would swing from side to side. With one army bearly holding out, and then counter attacking in response. The game turned into a 35 minute, unpredictable battle royale!
I have not had such a fun game in a long time, with neither army going standard builds or unit combos.
So wheres the problem?
The problem is that I won :/
My friend just "GG" and left the game, and i didnt hear from him for a few days... I was a bit taken back to say the least and i realised something: Starcraft has become such a competitive game that fun and Spontaneity are now out of the question. We do the standard builds that we know will bring results and forget about the unpredictable.
We get pissed off for losing, rather than being happy about the game....
So in your future games remember: gl !HF!

Thanks a lot, people really need it, including me, but I quit sc

hehehe. At the recent VT lan, I lost every game, but I still had a lot of fun. It can get very frustrating when you lose a lot (i would know ><) but when I realize the game is over, I don't just leave, I start goofing off. At one point I dropped about 5-6 probes in tec27's main beacuse he had a couple tanks raping mine. Another time i had two dark templars attacking Darkridley's natural while his mass of hydras killed off my last buildings.
Let's face it, the game is just more interesting when you start screwing around. after all, it is a game, and it's a shame when people avoid playing it because they don't want to be beaten all the time.

I agree. A lot of players take winning/losing way too seriously and totally take the fun out of the game. Whenever I think up of a great "creative" (omg, the c word) build that may not produce immediate insta-win results but is more so for the cool factor, all the obs leave. I then proceed to win the game and humiliate my opponent. Or lose the game in an epic manner.
Things like fooling around, not caring about winning or losing but just to try new things out and have a good game. Like in a 2v2 PT team going pure medics while my ally goes pure zealots just for laughs. (I made a ridiculous amount of medics from 6 rax)
Or that SC2GG game where they went cannon+pool rush was pretty creative (though follow-up failed miserably)
It's funny how so many people that hear "not playing you cause your rec sucks" and reply "rec means nothing noob" will still proceed to be obsessed with only winning and will instantly shrug aside any notion of playing non-standard "freestyle" builds.
I've been practicing 1v1 with an old friend (we both suck) and he has high useful apm (not spam) but hasn't been keeping up with all the latest build orders. He rapes me in a TvP while I played standard. I ask him what build he did and he replied, "I don't really do builds, I just play accordingly to what happens in the game. I was just lucky I guess..." No, he wasn't just lucky, I got my ass handed to me because I didn't know how to respond to something out of the ordinary.

'At one point I dropped about 5-6 probes in tec27's main beacuse he had a couple tanks raping mine.'
LOL!

For some reason, knowing it goes on a record (even one I can erase) makes me care about losing sooo much more. I think, since you can go clearstats anyway, you should be able to toggle whether or not you want to play for points or not- like be able to play in standard 1v1's on iccup where he will still lose or gain depending on his performance but your score won't change because you have "practise mode" on. I would love to see that implemented, it would make it so much easier for me to take the game really lightly. Just get up to D+ or (C-, optimistically), then just turn on practise mode, massgame and chill. Then when you feel like you've gotten good enough and you're ready you can try to climb the ladder again.
Now that I thinkof it, one huge downside would be practise players being nice and just leaving games to give those playing for points the wins.

It makes sense that if you're laddering on iCCup that you're probably going to do your best and try to get as high rank as you can as quickly as you can.
But personally, in my opinion, I find that so tedious and boring. Others may find it exciting to work so hard for a computer game, but I just rather play for fun. I play standard on iCCup mainly just to keep up with times so that I don't get steamrolled in every 1v1 I play (but rather... steam cooked? steam sauna-ed?) But whenever I play on b.net, I play for fun, regardless of win/lose.
I still like to win, yes, that's human nature, but having fun comes first.
The people I play with are like me. Even if we completely own in a one-sided stomp, we'll complain about such a boring game and wish for a more exciting one. Even if we lose, if we manage to hold off for as long as we do on an uphill (but hopeful) battle, or persay pull off a ridiculous strat successfully but still fail in follow up - we still won in fun even if the game was lost.

tbh I have the most fun when I am in really close games where my opponent and I were playing very well. I understand what you mean but I guess it's different for everyone.

great post, sometimes when I have a losing streak I get pretty upset, but I always remind myself that its just for fun.

This reminds me of the opening of Pure Pwnage Episode "Just the Guys Pt. 1"

5/5 i totally agree. The extreamly competitive side of sc is what turned me off it for the longest time. Imo its much funner playing a game just trying out new shiz and wanking around then doing the same old shit day in day out

I am just like the guy above. I have some rivals that if I lose to them I get pissed off. I really need to change that but on ICCup I don't really care about stats. I know some people who say Stats > Rank on ICCup was is kinda stupid lol

I agree that sc has lost most of its fun... but with such an 'old' multiplayer game what can you do.

I am a very competitive person in nature, I HATE to lose, and I agree I want to play starcraft more for fun, and I do want to stay competitive and win but at the same time I do not want to be playing this game just to win, I also want to have fun. Thats the whole purpose of a game, is to have FUN! but yeah that will be hard for me cuz I really like to win
