^ That is one of many possible applications of a Go Board such as the one pictured here:
However, the uses for a Go Board that I am interested in involve playing go and looking aesthetically pleasing (not that lesbians can't do this; don't get me wrong). Pellucidity and I played a couple of games of go on kgs http://www.gokgs.com in response to the Go thread.
Pellucidity mentioned that he was interested in a Go Board, but that the good ones were hella' expensive. We started researching online about different go boards, and I felt like writing about it a bit.
Go boards come in several varieties:
1) Travel sets (basically toys)
2) Flat boards (meant for use on a table)
3) Floor boards (best; meant for positioning on the floor; usually has legs; taller=better)
Prices: In a quick summary, I'll say that the first category, travel/portable sets, go for up to ~100 dollars. The second category, table boards, start at ~100 and go up to several hundred. The third category, floor boards, start at several hundred, and go up in price rapidly depending on the quality of the board. A well made, kaya board, will probably run you a few thousand dollars!
After browsing a few sites, Pellucidity and I decided we both really liked the following item:
"[04:18] <Pellucidity> wow that board looks amazing [04:29] <Pellucidity> Yes it's gorgeous! [04:32] <Pellucidity> The carvings are so pretty [04:46] <Pellucidity> yes it's gorgeous [04:35] <Pellucidity> Pfff cars, I don't intend on buying a car, ever "
It's made of bamboo which is not the traditional wood for go boards though. I'm not sure how much less desirable that should make the item. It goes for Price: $975.00 Now $495.00 plus ~$55 shipping. Compare that to the more basic item shown below that costs 184 dollars:
I'm seriously considering buying a Goban! 碁盤
+ Show Spoiler +The title of this thread was suggested by Pellucidity when I mentioned we should think of a way to draw TL readers into this blog!

aaa Go. Do you already know how to play, or are you just learning? I tried learning it once, but when there wasn't anyone that would play, I decided to not attempt playing myself.
I have a board and pieces actually and they are pretty ancient looking. The picture of 2 would look similar to mine if you were to throw it against a brick wall 40 or 50 times.
Just buy a cheapish one and if you really love it, buy the sexy one.

Now i hate Go. And i don't even know how to play.

intuition told me there wasnt going to be any hot lesbian sex in this thread but you still suck

I play go, but it's not easy.. though i beat everyone at my house..

hahaha you had me going....

i have a 1.3 inch shin kaya board, with a set of old yunzi. fucking beautiful stuff ^^
I also have 8 mm japanese double convex glass stones, not so bad, but the single convex is definetly my preference.

Personally, I think go is a very hard game to play.
When i try to play with my nooby friends, we also end up arranging our pieces in a line. The pros usually set their pieces on more strategically.
I have a freind who plays Go rather competitively in Hong Kong. We always play Chinese chess and "linking to five" chess (dont really know how you call it)

I don't think I can express my disappointment at this clearly fraudulent advertising in words....
Bamboo is a nice wood though

It's lame attracting people this way. I didn't buy it, but I wanted to see what were you going to talk about.
If the title involved "Go", I'd check it out anyway...
As for the topic, that table looks helluva nice. If you have the money to spend, and the will to play Go so much that it's beneficial to buy that table, go for it.

i knew there would be no lesbian sex here but i went in anyway=(

The foldable ones are probably cheaper, but the floor ones are cooler

technically go is hot lesbian sex on a table

I play go as well. I was wondering what this thread was and was pleasantly surprised. I am about 10-15 kyu so I'm not all that good. Um... how good are you?
|
I have a board with drawers and stuff. Its not made of kaya or shin kaya Idk what it is. Its just but I think I might get another one cause there drawers are stiff.
|
|
How much do you want to spend and how good are you are the really important things i think.
|
Go is a fucking awesome game. The reason why the legs are usually short is because, as you probably know, most people played it sitting on the floor.
I loved the Go board in Hero (Jet Li), the one that was huge and stone and had to be played with one of those sticks that looked like shuffleboard sticks.
|
I just had a brilliant idea. Buy a good looking table at a garage sale for next to nothing, then draw the go lines in it. It'll look good, it'll have your own craftsman's touch adding character and uniqueness to it, and you won't pay a fortune for a piece of shit like some tool.

my grandfather's a professional chinese player, i think he's 8dan... but yeah, i used to play for fun and then i played him and then i quit. haha ;\

Is glass particularly inferior to real stones? BTW, how much less nice is a thin board like the one you have versus a full sized floor board?

We always play Chinese chess and "linking to five" chess (dont really know how you call it) I think they mention that game 'connect 5?' in the first episode of Hikaru no Go. Yeah it's been interesting seeing how my piece placement evolves as I learn to play less simplistically. This is partly just from observing other players (real and anime characters :p) and also from trying things out or reading about it.

hmm. i havent used a traditional floor board before but i HIGHLY recomend just buying a thick table board instead. purely for practicality. You'll be able to take your board elswehere with relative ease, whereas if you buy a huge bamboo board you'll have a shitload of trouble (bamboo is very very heavy). if you feel comfortable spending that much money you should just buy a 2" kaya from ymimports.com. fantastic site with amazing customer service.
2 and 3/8" kaya board, traditional japanese size: http://www.ymimports.com/Items/yn-tk001-a?&caSKU=yn-tk001-a&caTitle=Kaya - 2-3/8'' Go Board (Japanese Standard Size)
Hmm, yunzi stones are traditional chinese stones. japanese traditonal stones are slate and shell (Super super super expensive). the chinese stones are alot more practical, i.e. single convex ^^. its all preference. i do highly recomend yunzi however, as the double convex yunzi they make are very very sexy.

I did find it funny, but it's still cheating! I mean, come one, if eveyone starts false advertising we'll have a blog section filled with sex sex pussyhair. If that happens I'm bound to stop checking every blog to find something interesting and I'll stop reading the blog section. Ofc using false advertising here and there can be funny, but let's not loose our sense of humor.
Aestethically you'd have to see if it fits the other furniture, and where you'd put it. I'd put it in my room even if I didn't play it much if there wasn't the price, as is with everything. Doh. >.<
I actually never played Go, but it tickeled my curiosity for a long time and I've always wanted to learn it - since it's portrayed as a highly skill-dependent and hard, yet fun and "simple" game.
