I've thought of this for sometime and my theory is that the lurker doesn't shoot spikes from the ground. If you think about it how can a lurker so small shoot such large spikes for infinite periods of time? XD Unless of course the spike is grew on the lurker and it just shoots out like a cat's nail. But the lurker we see on screen isn't that big to hold such spikes! So here comes my theory...Lurkers underground raises its spikes on its back and when it attacks it MOVES right under the target with its raised spikes, and it doesn't SHOOT it like a gun. So when you press hold position the lurker stops attacking because it is maintained at the same location it burrowed so it cannot move to its target, and therefore the spikes cannot hit the target.

anyone else with me on this?

How can a zealot continue to attack the lurker if it moves?

Nonetheless I would like someone to explain how the lurker attack DOES work. Are the "subterranean spines" part of the lurker's body, or does it simply displace the ground under units? Yangpan's theory is still interesting though, if they remake the lurker they might do something like that.

There is no way that it does or does not work. If you want it to work one way, that is the way it works. Feel free to theorize about how it works, it is fun, I think about that stuff too, but nobody can explain it to you, because nobody knows.

if a job spot opens up at blizzard and they need more people to expand on the uhh... storyline, im sure they'll find your hokus pokus scooby-doo theories of considerable value.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

The Lurker in fact uses a revolutionary (aka hacked) genome (aka hard-coding) by which it launches an invisible, super-quick Zerg Beacon that floats through its targets creating spine images.

Holding the attack is simply trying to use a command not meant for the hacked code, which messes up the codeblock that spawns the Beacons.

Simple as that.

That is the most ridiculous theory I've ever heard! In the starcraft universe, there are spikes buried underground everywhere (yes, even on space platforms). The lurker can generate a hyperbolic inverse quantum gravitational field that causes these spikes to shoot up. But doing so requires alot of concentration on the lurker's part. When you tell a lurker to hold, it gets confused because it's primitive brain cannot recognize the order. And since the lurker's too busy thinking "wtf am I suppose to do?", it cannot generate the quantum gravitational field and hence, the spikes don't shoot up.

If it was doing that then how do the spikes come from the same place every time? The spikes travel outwards from the same point, the lurker would have to move to the target, and then move back to the original spot. If he attacked that way the spikes would go from A to B, and then from B to A.
