The New Ranking System

The 7.07 Patch might just be one of the biggest changes in the game of Dota 2. Valve have decided to rework the ranking system of the game, and instead of MMR numbers, players will be ranked with badges every season. Players have mixed reactions to this new ranking system, obviously those who got above average MMR Ranking might not be happy for this update while those bottom ranked players (1K - 2K ranks), might be happy as they don't need to create a new account again as it is really difficult to climb to 3K - 4K ranking especially when you're below 2K, I should know as I was once a 1K MMR player before and god it took 2 years for me to reach 3K. I don't know, I might be bad at the game, or just so unlucky enough that I got teamed up to those players who is also at the learning stage of the game.

I always wondered what its like to play a 5K or 6K game, as there are many things that I can learn, and not only that, but you will be teamed up with above average players as well and they will be able to give you some advice or tips on where to place your wards if you're a support, or what item best suited for your core heroes.

With this new ranking system, I can now play with and against high ranked players before, and while it is tough, but there are many things that you will learn and players like me will surely improve on how to play the game, especially when you have already decided your primary role, support/core. One of the disadvantages with the MMR Ranking system is when you're playing 1K - 2K games, players barely communicate with you in-game. Most of the time, players doesn't have mics, and there's that language barrier as well (though we have started to establish our own universal langage for Dota 2). With this new ranking system implemented by Valve, will surely help players especially new ones as well.

One of the things that makes Dota 2 community not so friendly, especially with noobs/newbie is this MMR Ranking as well. When the match started, those player who has the highest rank will bully those who have lesser rank, even though game stats shows that the high ranked player played poorly during the match compared to the lower rank. With this new ranking system, they can no longer use the "I have a higher MMR than you" card. There are players who are ranked below 2K, played really well in the game, while those who have 2K - 3K ranks, plays poorly. This time around, everybody will start equally and hopefully this will lead to a better community that what we have right now.

I am happy with the new ranking system that Valve implemented as I am confident that this will help other players, not just me, improve their gameplay and eventually will breed a new set of pro's. Again I commend Valve for this update, although this is not a perfect ranking system, but for sure this is better than the last one.

Hopefully, they will find solution to the problem of players picking their respective roles in the game. As there are times where players picks all core heroes without support, or players who pick a support hero but played it as if it is a carry. I hope to see someday where you are assessed on how well you played for each roles from position 1-5. Valve...

We smoke together, gank as one!

The sole purpose of this new system is so valve doesn't need to worry about matchmaking complaints anymore. You have 5k players playing with 6,7 or even 8 k players,or 3k getting matched with 4.5k shit like that.It was obvious that the system is flawed but instead of doing something about it in a meanigful way they introduced these medals which doesn't show the actual number difference but just the "medal".So now you get divine players matched against each other and legends with archons, the actual skill difference can be HUGE between these players, but theres no actual number that can solidify that and it makes the complaints go away in the easiest way possible. However some people like to burry their heads in the sand and think that mmr doesn't represent skill,it really does.A 500 mmr difference is a sizable skill gap.Someone may be spamming only meepo to get higher mmr,but that meepo player will in most casses absolutelly destory anyone that's 500 mmr below him.The difference may not be so huge the higher your mmr gets but between people who are 2k up till 6 k the skill gaps are insane.

Tl;dr the purpose of the new system is only to mask the matchmaking problem, not fixing it

Oh one more thing. You will learn nothing if your mmr is like 2.5k and you get matched with a 6k player. You're whole team of 2.5k players will get absolutelly stomped in 15 minutes and you'll only feel bad about yourself. That's the reason smurf accounts are such a problem.

MMR still exists (you can see it in your stats page in game) and games are balanced on that MMR. Actually, the entire medal system is based on MMR.

With this new ranking system, they can no longer use the "I have a higher MMR than you" card.

Each medal rank has 6 sub tiers in that medal (0-5) that are based on MMR, so this is just plain wrong. If someone is Archon 3 (Archon 3 is between 2940-3080), but you're Archon 2 (2800-2940), you know they have higher MMR than you. This system in a lot of ways is actually even more transparent than the last one since you used to only see the highest MMR player in the game and the avg MMR, so you would have to guess what MMR the other players on your team were (let's just assume they weren't showing it in their profile for this example). In the new system, you can see what everyone's medal and sub tier is during the draft (once people have all calibrated ofc) and knowing that it's based on MMR you can quickly tell who the lowest in the game is.

The only time this could be an issue is when it comes to Divine 5 players since you could be low 6k and Divinie 5, or 8k and Divine 5. However, valve has a leaderboard number displayed for everyone in this division on their profile so that issue does not exist.

Yes it is, but on ther other hand, shit ton of MMR got lost in the recalibration process so 5k is literally the old 6k.

not sure if it works exactly like that, i know a few low 5k ppl who are divine 0 or 1 now. i feel like it's just the extremes of mmr that got compressed.

Yea it definitely wasn't compressed linearly. The top level (7k+) lost 1k or even more on avg (2k if you were like 9-10k), and it gets a bit better the lower you go. Most 5ks probably lost like 250-500 although I've seen a few not move at all or even gain MMR after recalibration. Who knows what factors influenced that though. With that being said I believe Ler might have been slightly exaggerating. I'd agree if he said 5.7-5.8k is the new 6k.

I've seen most of my 4k friends either stay the same or lose 50-300 on avg.

I went 3-7 in placement matches and lost 100 mmr 5,2->5,1

You can still see you mmr in the console with developer 1 -> dota_game_account_client_debug

There's no need to use console. It's in your stats page in game on the top right.
