Here are some key principles to bluffing successfully:
1. At all times, appear confident and in control
In our society, people will generally trust someone who looks like they know what they’re doing. The trick to mastering this principal is to actually be confident and in control.
Confidence is not a characteristic, it’s a skill. People must learn to be confident. People who are not confident have not mastered their will power and learned to convince themselves to move beyond insecurity and step into action and self-assurance. Confidence is grown in the soil of continual victories. Remind yourself of your victories and how you achieve them and become confident. Insecurity will not rule against your proven triumphs.
Once you’ve learned confidence you can step forward with it into most situations, regardless of the reality of the situation. Bluffing is lying. But if you believe your lie, it comes more naturally and seems more honest.
2. Be a risk taker
Start small and gradually grow in your risks. Through trial and error you will learn how big you can go in certain situations or with certain audiences. Be okay to lose when taking risks. If you cannot afford to lose, don’t take the risk. Use your smaller wins to build confidence into larger risks.
3. Don’t over-bluff an audience
Like the boy who cried wolf; don’t over stay your visit with your bluff, it will backfire in your face. Your audience will learn about your, perhaps strange, behaviour and they will question it.
Again, bluffing is lying. Lying goes against the natural flow of logic – usually. The difference between a bluff and a lie is that a bluff is not discovered as a lie. A successful bluff will be taken as truth, bluffing is truth to the deceived. A lie has been understood as a lie; hence the audience can call it that. So your unnatural actions, taking place too many times, will be discovered as a lie. Space out your bluffs.
4. Your fundamental mentality should be: “I won’t get caught”
This is a hard one to master and it takes us even further down the path of becoming a sociopath… so tread lightly into this mentality…
The non-bluffer will think, “Oh man I’m guna get caught if I do this.”
The bluffer will think, “I know I’m not the center of the universe, no one is really watching or caring, I won’t get caught.”
The non-bluffer thinks this way because they’re acting out of character and the experience is weighing heavily on their mind. Furthermore, people are convinced everyone is watching them at all times and so we believe we have to act a certain way publicly.
In reality, no one gives a fuck about you; they’re too busy reflecting on themselves, so you can probably get away with most bluffs.
The bluffer also realizes that no one has comprehensive knowledge of most situations. They know that a counter argument in the mind of the deceived– while they are processing the bluff – will win the day because of lack of information.
5. Always withhold information
As previously discussed, lack of information is the number one ally to a bluff. If you know you’re going to be in an arena where bluffing is essential to getting what you want – withhold information.
Your behaviour is your most valuable display of information. Like in a game of poker, a player’s actions with their cards – and the way they condition their opponents to believe what their actions are – are more important than the actual cards – in a bluff situation. By folding, raising, etc. in specific methodology, a poker player can condition their opponents to believe they have certain cards throughout a lengthy game. When the time is right, they can act in accordance with historic “hands” and bluff against their opponent creating a victory.
6. Don’t bluff out of being caught – fold
If you suspect someone is onto your bluff, don’t try and double bluff to get out, just give up and fess up. Believe it or not, this display of truth will set you up perfectly to bluff again in the future – hah!
Use moments of truth as your ally to set the stage for the next bluff.
So maybe not so good i disagree with too many of your "caricatures" of a situation i don't disagree or agree on what you say maybe some too but.. ..you have a very low depth of reasoning.. i mean not bad reasoning just your guide is like for people who never play.. play once a year .. tops.
playing same people, playing unknown people, playing unknown people that you spent several hours with, playing online, playing online for years with the same people.. i could go on and on and on + Show Spoiler +
and on
but what's the point right? You can't be wrong per se if you don't dip any toes into the subject matter a bit more in depth .. no?

I agree with fluidrone in not agreeing with #1. In fact, often the best way to manipulate someone is to act like you're not sure about whatever you're trying to get them to do.
This ain't algebra, give us some context you dang nerd. What are you trying to trick people with?
Just in general I can't agree that a bluff is a lie that didn't get a caught. A bluff is saying you have more than you do, and really not much else. I've never heard it used the way you're talking about it. What you're getting at with no one watching or caring sounds like just being a criminal.
Two users who don't agree with #1 though, that's literally the definition of bluffing, though I can see why you get confused the way he's using it.
In my opinion, all lying and deceit is not really that clever. For one every single civil person does it when they act pleasant to someone they dislike, and for two whenever you go past that, taking advantage of social customs and trust to screw people over or con them, you're just kind of failing to see the long-term and big picture, spending a lot of energy on risky bs that will leave you unable to trust others, when you could work within the system for better payoff. The whole point of trust is that it is short-hand to save resources that we would otherwise spend being paranoid everyone is trying to con us.

ok fine, i'll bite! i did not read the op .. i had to post after reading the first line.. just to attest i was there before it got closed .. old tl habit habit just to say i did disagree and was hoping redeeming stuff would help .. maybe (reading did not yield much but still.. politeness dictates to follow through since i had posted...
i then read and edited in (sorry still not convinced it was worth the read :/ )
So .. in this case, so as to make a sort of edit 1 / edit 2 but sexier i force the reader to read what i want first (sure some might not read all without opening spoilers first, but they have the possibility .. plus i doubt it .. i air stuff out so i think people read all i said in diagonal before opening spoilers anyway.. brains are fast when there is not much to read, no?) i don't use spoilers just like + Show Spoiler +
that
.
As for the picture spoiler.. well picture is something that clogs threads (tl frowns upon it, they call me a pictureboarder in their meetings in the electrical storage units that should serve) i feel putting it in a spoiler .. it makes the viewer interactive and stuff you open it and it jumps at you (do remember i come from a century where naked women on websites started by taking 2 hours to come out in full...) did you like the picture? i found it by typing bluffing in poker as tag search fun no?
to format and for fun and for editing and probably coz i can't do it in real life (while talking) .. i guess.
Sorry dear nina, i was very rude to you earlier in our relationship and i now regret it sorry again, i'll try to keep the spoilers to an understandable level in penitence for the hurt i must have caused you.
yes i think it is possible to get back on topic.. it is always possible
Bluffing in the context of the op bluffing in his very oip is quite more enticing i agree dear nina <3
Yes.. i think most bluffing is done through a showcase of inadequacies (although there is a type of bluffing for each type of people capable of such display of skill or natural inclination.
Some of us know how to lie.. that much is easy.. the only way to cure yourself of this curse is to never lie so as to combat the genetic predisposition.. or lie as much as you can whenever wherever possible so as to combat the affliction organically (ergo the moment where the lie is caught is a liberation not a condemnation) .. .. you have lied enough to not be caught or have not lied enough to be caught yet...
In that context i feel the op is much more interesting.. still boringly stylized though, but interesting
i started out by saying that #1 look confident etc was totally off
and i stand by it
"making the wrong move at the right time" (watch the scene aforementioned) Great poker players practicing so much they vomit sometimes are head to head, and there they are professional (so they are the wolves, no one can fool them and people are afraid of anything they do.. no?)
and it is a pro faking a mistake that gets him the upper hand, he has cornered the young in an avenue of :
"he can't possibly have the jack"
"no way he has the jack"
even and more so within the frame of a movie goer itself watching the movie (you are sure! absolutely sure macqueen never loses ever and all that) .. all the while you have being bluffed/lied to in every second of the previous scenes into believing that the old poker player will make way for the new and then..+ Show Spoiler +
