Good work my dude. I'm into soda as well, I've never had much of a sweet tooth for candy or desserts, its soda. Coffee as well but since I don't like the taste of coffee I have to add a bunch of sugar. I self medicate my ADHD with caffeine after trying some ADHD prescriptions and hating the way they made me feel I got off them and went back to fucktons of caffeine to make myself feel normal. On top of the soda/coffee quitting cigarettes 4 years ago and nicotine all together 2 years ago shits been rough lol. Nicotine is an obscenely powerful appetite suppressant, no joke.
I've gotta get my shit back in line. Find an alternative means of getting my caffeine intake so I feel like a relatively normal human being. I need to start riding my bike again really. I live in like the best biking area in the country, I used to bike SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fucking much growing up but once kids get a car the bike usually goes in the back of the garage.
You're definitely right about the people not giving a shit with the gym or running. That's something that's hard to realize in the moment. So often you're self conscious about something. A blemish, a lazy eye, a defect, weight, anything really. You beat yourself up about it, think everyone is staring at you and judging you when the reality is that no one gives a fuck. They don't even see or notice that thing you can't get over or forgive yourself about. You just have to let go of the baggage you're carrying and it'll be fine, it's just really hard to remember that in the moment when you're self conscious.
Thanks for sharing your insights and journey.

Yeah, I'm aware of how bad soda is because I have horrid and decaying teeth. It's just how integral soda is in my day-to-day lifestyle that makes it so addictive

sugar is a drug after all... so good job by reducing that. I myself got rid of soda, ice teas and all that shit 5 years ago. it works wonders. if you do that and then replace your food with self-cooked food or good from good restaurants (no fast food restaurants of course) thats already a huge step even if someone is not that eager on the workout front. its mind boggling how much sugar is even in salty things when it comes to fast/junk food and stuff and im not talking about carbs. and if you just invest a little bit in learning to properly cook (its really easy to be honest) the food isnt only healthier but better tasting as well. im really lazy on working out like super lazy i basically dont do it :D. and just switching my eating and drinking behaviour helped out so much.

What sucks for me is that my work has free soda about 25 feet from my desk.... I mean what can a man do?

Suggest to the company to change to not have it free from a health point of view. Keeping water free. Maybe lift it for internal discussion as well with a sugar coating of a raise equalling the soda cost (or something else for the money)? I know the company I work at is very proactive regarding health issues since they want people at work long term.

Personally where I live I really enjoy the taste of the water, but if you are in an area with shitty water I find that if you get a good filter it makes your water taste a lot better.
I guess if you can't bring yourself to enjoy water it might be rough, but like lets say I'm eating a cold piece of pizza I usually will drink a whole cup of water with it, and the cup I use is like 30oz and I find myself enjoying it. I'm sure my experience is anecdotal, but I hope it can help you. I just happen to really enjoy water and if you can't then it might be a quality issue at which point you can try the variety of different filters you can get from a basic britta to the more advanced ones.
Also congrats Blitz, I'm in a similar boat, I'm also 5'10" and I was at about 255 and I finally had enough a few weeks ago and have been embracing going to the gym, like mentally I find myself wanting to go and workout when previously it was a mental chore I had to overcome. I'm down to 238 and I can really feel the difference as my arms and everything get bigger.

Congrats on the weight loss FatalTouch1, but just a word of caution. Eating below 1200 calories a day can be quite dangerous! Basically, I'd be concerned about literally starving yourself: http://www.livestrong.com/article/317540-how-many-calories-a-day-is-considered-starving/
There's a health metric called the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - this is basically the amount of calories a hospital would still give you every day if you were in a coma. So basically the minimum for your body to keep going long-term even if you don't do anything.
Here is a very simple BMR calculator: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator
Now, also there is a concept of Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). This is how many calories you actually burn on an average day. Here's a slightly more complex calculator that looks at this: http://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
I'd suggest looking at the calculators and finding a calorie goal that meets your weight loss goal, while being above your BMR. And then adjust every so often as you pare off weight.
Again, congrats on the weight loss so far. But please take a look and make sure you're doing so safely.

Thanks for sharing your personal story, Blitz. I too have a sweet tooth for the soda, and I think I'd be way better without it. Unfortunately it sucks because I work all the time, I feel like I dont have enough time to pencil in the gym or get the right food so I tend to take the path of least resistance. That to me, is the worst rut to be in.
I think I can learn from your journey and better myself.

Great job on your weight loss! As someone who has lost weight and gained it back, and cycled up and down like this a few times, I will say that it is actually very important to be aware that something like 90% of people who lose a large percentage of their body fat gain it back slowly over 5 years. You should definitely have a set of rules for yourself that involves weighing yourself semi-regularly, and automatically resuming a harsher dietary restriction if you pass a certain threshold. People who don't do this and think "they are done" or that their workout habits will continue forever, typically gain back a good portion of the weight they lost, because their body is still kind of working against them in terms of hunger.

I like water and all that, it's just if I don't have some sugar or some soda once in awhile, I can't seem to enjoy any foods or I feel it isn't 'hitting the spot' when I want to eat something.
I really just need to suck it up and just quit soda all together but I end up compensating with some other sugar anyways (cereal, cookies, etc.)

I like water and all that, it's just if I don't have some sugar or some soda once in awhile, I can't seem to enjoy any foods or I feel it isn't 'hitting the spot' when I want to eat something. I really just need to suck it up and just quit soda all together but I end up compensating with some other sugar anyways (cereal, cookies, etc.) What about Perrier? It's similar to La Croix but I think has less flavors.

I can relate to this on so many levels- I am Korean as well as I had a similar experience in my upbringing too. I've lost significant weight about 6 times since I was 19. Every time, I would get fat, then lose the weight over and over. In fact, I am the in process of losing weight again- hopefully for the last time. I've lost 16 lbs so far. For me, the hardest part was maintaining fitness, not obtaining it. I sincerely hope you don't take it for granted as I have, and maintain the level of fitness you want throughout your life. Loved reading your story, GL with your future endeavors.

I've trying to quit Soda on and off for about 3-4 years, I don't know how you do it - do you drink any juice or it's straight-up just water? I tried going cold turkey. I tried switching to Ginger Ale before quitting and I tried switching to juice before trying to quit and I always end up going back to drink soda again (or having at least something with sugar in my day - otherwise I feel off and very unsatisfied). Congratulations again, any advice on quitting soda? I don't eat cookies or pastries, I only like candy and soda or sugar cereal (I managed to quit candy awhile back). When I quit soda, all my meals taste really bland or I get annoyed that all I eat is things without any sugary-taste. A trick I learned was that whenever I want a soda, I should try and drink a glass of water first and that helps a lot. Cool, al'right. I'll give it a shot of just water. And no its not unhealthy i could you like 10 studies. Bad for teeth and not the best hydration but infinity better then none diet. This is the meta studie https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17299484The meta-analysis revealed significant reduction in energy intakes when aspartame was used, compared with all types of control except when aspartame was compared with non-sucrose controls such as water. The mean reduction was about 10% of total energy intake……
….As a result, diet beverages might represent the optimal use of intense sweeteners in the context of a weight control strategy. Although they have been shown to be associated with some modest weight loss in RCTs (De La Hunty et al., 2006), intense sweeteners are not appetite suppressants. Their ultimate effects will depend on their integration within a reduced energy diet. Yeah, I'm aware of how bad soda is because I have horrid and decaying teeth. It's just how integral soda is in my day-to-day lifestyle that makes it so addictive I don't say I'm addicted to soda, but I do enjoy it every once in a while. Have you tried La Croix or other scented carbonated water? I find myself enjoying it a ton and it makes you feel healthy because no sugar and 0 calories. It's probably my go to drink now if I find myself a bit bored of regular water. La Croix is American, no? I'm Germany sadly. I don't really enjoy tonic water or less-flavoured soda so I just end up reverting back. I tried only Ginger Ale but I think it was just me bullshitting myself. I think you just gotta try to find it within yourself to truly want the change and really commit. If you eat that much sugar I think (could be wrong) it can have some physical side effects in the short term where you want it. Try to force yourself to stick to no junk food/water for a month and see how it goes. I was eating BK/wendy's all the time 2 months ago and today my female friend wanted to get taco bell and I said sure, but when I went in I had zero desire to eat there and ended up leaving and going to a local healthy place that serves grilled chicken and broccoli. It's somethiing I couldn't see myself doing 2 months ago but once I went without it, then I stopped looking at it as something I needed in my life and now it just seems silly that I used to go get junk food an hour before I'd go to sleep and eat myself into a coma that would leave me feeling disgusting half way into the following day.
