Hey guys,
I'm quuad. I'm a Brood War fan and 3D artist. So what better way to combine those things than to recreate some of the BW art in glorious high definition?
I got really excited when I realized there was already a project underway to build a replica of BW, so I offered my services to the openbw team. I now have the role of design lead of the BWHD part of the project.
I thought I'd share some progress here in blog posts.
First up is the supply depot:
And this is the actual size it would have in the game (2.25x the original sprite):
I want to mention that we're not trying to do exact one to one copies of original sprites, we make some additions and changes where we feel they would look good. And also, due to the low resolution of the original game, it's really hard to see what some things are supposed to be so you kinda just have to make stuff up

That is SICK mate. It looks amazing. Can't wait for more.

Fantastic work. Looks great!

Looks amazing i still wonder how humans can live in that :D but man your work is great
pls show us more

Whoa, I've never been more excited seeing a supply depot!

That looks awesome. Any time I've asked people "Hey, what if we changed the graphics in brood war?" they just go "nope", but this looks pretty good.
A big difference between BW and SC2 is that SC2 has a lot of dull colors that kind of blend together. Brood War has a lot of contrasting colors that really make thing pop on the screen. I dunno... I'm looking at your supply depot, and the Brood War supply depot, and the bw one seems like has more white and looks brighter. It's very possible that I'm crazy, though.

Yeah the fans on the right look a bit dark

The outer structure definitely looks like a brighter white in the original BW model. Especially on the little structures at the bottom left around the yellow and black bars. There's definitely a bigger contrast overall in the original than in the HD one. That said, that might just have been a necessity to get some sort of discernible structure with how low-res it was.

It's beautiful! Really love the worn look thanks to the texturing, too bad some of that detail gets lost when shrunk down to game size. Any plans for a banged up version for damaged (burning) sprite? I hope so, I think that's where the high def 3d will really shine in comparison to the original graphics. Incremental damage would be really cool too, but I can understand if that's not a planned feature or priority for openbw.
I can see you put a good deal of effort into being faithful to the original, at least in spirit, even if it's not an exact copy. Though that has the side effect that I cannot unsee some kind of fancy PC or electronics heatsink component... I think it's those fan grilles, and maybe also the green/black surfaces looking like a circuit board. XÞ Not your fault though, I've always been irked by the sheer amount of fans on the original design -- one whole side of the structure plus most of the roof? How much ventilation does a building need anyway? lol XÞ
Love it, keep it up!

The supply depot is actually always on fire and you need the fans to suck out the air to try to contain it. When the fans get damaged, the flames spread to the exterior of the building since they can get their air and the fire grows. The more the fans are damaged the bigger the fire gets.
They need the fire to cook the marshmallows that feed the Terran army. Unfortunately, space marshmallows are harvested from Zerglings toenails and need a big big flame to cook through properly. That's why you need a big fire in the depot. Incidentally, it's also why the depot can't lift because they can't contain such a big fire on the metal ships. The supply depot's floor is actually a good five feet underground and that's where they put the fire instead of on the vulnurable metal.

I came. That looks absolutely amazing and very true to the original. Looking forward to more.

Oh wow, I am not sure about the marshmallows part, but it does look like the fans are sucking air out. Judging from the direction they rotate and the angle of the blades.

If they really manage to make a HD version without fucking anything the BW scene is going to be amazing in Korea.

I thought BWHD project died long time ago or was a myth.

Thanks so much for the comments everyone! I'm very glad you like it Thanks also for the observations about brightness of the materials etc. I'll probably do another pass of minor adjustments before I call it completely done. But it won't really be a pixel perfect match. It's more about, like cakepie put it, keeping it in the spirit of the original.

Yeah I know haha I kind of gave up trying to make sense of the design and just tried to make it look cool and faithful. I agree with the circuit board/PC component observation. It's a bit of a wacky design really.
We might get around to doing damaged versions of the buildings - it would certainly be very cool - but for now the focus is probably going to be on finishing more of them.
