ok i finished watching this game ,

if you are VERY curious and do not intend to play the game then here is my spoiler-free summary:

bad game design all over, terrible story telling and directing, solid characters spoilt by a consistently lacklustre and uninspired script, unsatisfactory gameplay that probably could have been literally anything else and more fun, many HUGE parts of the plot literally "left out" for the purposes of being filled in at a later date by DLC (presumably), AND SO ON (mostly various forms of bad game design or just low quality implementations)

i didn't play this game. instead i watched a decent amount (~16 hours) of itmeJP killing mobs and then quit at the start of chapter 14 and instead watched the entire story on youtube with most battles removed (5hr30m)

i strongly get the impression that it was put together very very poorly

either that, or i get the impression that Japanese quality of game design is far behind modern Western game design.

this is not hard to believe, since the language barrier will mean that Japanese developers are isolated from many Western games, right?

i have followed the user reviews on metacritic , they pretty much unanimously agree that the storytelling and a lot of the game design is bad, and most still go on to give the game 10/10 rating, which obviously i can't agree with.

it shocks and pains me to see that a lot of the gaping holes of nothingness in the game, such as "who the fuck was aranea?" "who the fuck was ravus?" "where the fuck did prompto go?" and "why the fuck was ignis walking round half the game blind?", it pains me to hear that these are planned DLCs rather than actually being in the game

i mean, it doesn't PAIN me, it outright disgusts me.

i could go in probably every inch of gameplay and describe why it is bad and how it could be improved, for example,

the voice acting was not recorded in a studio but instead was just the actors reading out their individual lines in isolation and then them being mixed together , so noticeably often it just doesn't make sense. this is understandable for a big game, but it does mean you have to be more careful with how you implement it. however there were many dialogue pieces in the game that didn't quite make sense

the characters were good, but the script was so fucking awful and uninspired that i didn't laugh once during the entire game and probably smiled twice. i think i spotted as many outright "this doesnt make sense or is just really bad" parts as i did parts that were endearing. you can't design solid characters and just make them say generic things, like, you need to DELIVER their personality to us. otherwise its just shit. i imagine they communicate much better in the anime, which i will watch soon

they would kill off characters and then randomly jam in some character building cutscenes about that character AFTER THEY WERE GONE AND BURIED, e.g. after luna died we got some cutscenes trying to explain more about who she is and who that sheever woman is, ITS A BIT LATE NOW GAME DON'T YOU THINK? its just REALLLY fucking bad planning to do this. give us information and character-building about the character BEFORE you remove them from the game, it's not rocket science. do you guys remember the old woman you meet randomly when you're briefly with andrea who gives you a little cut scene about luna? no, neither do i.

the complete absence of worthwhile story or any value in half of the things the game wanted you to do. "hi, i'm the marshell, go to some tombs, bye". there is zero value in this.

the complete absence of characterisation in many of the places, e.g. all the tombs. i get the impression that , given time, square would have given each tomb a massive theme surrounding them, so the tomb where you get a lance has a theme and sub-story about lances and the king who ruled with the lance. there's so little characterisation in the world, even NPCs are all wearing the same clothes and saying the same things

the combat system, and since i haven't played it i don't have the right to speak about it, apparently it's fun but there is zero actual depth to it, less so than a game like Kingdom Hearts. personally i think it is unforgivable to have uninspired, lacklustre mechanics in a game that revolves so strongly around its mechanics. there is just no excuse for coming out with poor systems when you are given so much money and freedom. the mechanics in Soma were criticised, for comparison, but then in Soma you were only using them 1/5 of the time rather than 4/5 of the time.

anyway, here is my final thoughts. i do intend to watch Adam Koebal playthrough at some point and get a different perspective through him.

i think the game is an amalgamation of poorly planned, poorly implemented, low quality concepts. there are big issues with pretty much every single thing, from noctis' so called "dialogue options" to the most basic dev issues such as not having characters repeat the same line of dialogue 4x in the space of 1 minute when you go back in a menu (the last time you speak to Talcott) . the character design is solid, when you get it, however the writing is uninspired at best, and the storytelling is complete and utter garbage. i mean, i heard JP shout "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON" enough times and i thought that was just because he was spending 4 hours out of every 5 grinding mobs. but i just watched the whole story in 5 hours flat and it's like mindboggling poorly directed. you couldn't do a worse job if you tried. however, individual cutscenes are very beautiful as self-contained pieces.

the only explanation really for them making the game so bitty and holey is that they plan to patch it all up with DLC ministories and such, but believe me i will be long gone from caring by that point . it is just disrespectful to purposely leave such gaps in your game, people deserve better from a game that is supposed to want to tell us a story.

i just watched adam koebal play through Soma, and i gotta say THAT game had a fucking solid, original, well-planned story and great, cleverly characterised, realistic voice acting. if that's what you're looking for in a game then get that. and you know what, it took him like 10 hours to complete. not even 20. and i would recommend that experience . but that's just me . i think we are beyond the point of recommending "mediocre" things when people are trying hard to go above and beyond

i watched the gameplay for ~16 hours and watched the story in two sittings for another ~5hr30. that's more than enough to garner some decent idea about the game and what a lot of its general and specific flaws are. i am also accustomed to watching games online and can easily tell you when i enjoy one and think it is clever and well-made, and when one isn't so so clever or well-made. and why.


don't think i'm trying to be edgy by calling this game out. 18% of people on metacritic rated it 4 or below so far (the rating gets rocketed by the fact that so many people (or should i say 'people'?) blanket rate it a 10/10 on release). by comparison, 22% of people on metacritic rated FF13 at 4 or below, and you know what a negative bandwagon that got. 29% of xbox users so far have rated FF15 at 4 or less (for their own and additional reasons, e.g. the graphics are blurry)

don't get me wrong, i LIKE the characters, they are cool. i LIKE the story (the main gist of it), it's alright. i'm a very chillax person and i can get behind almost anything if i think the appropriate care has been put into it. but the production of this game is fucking awful in most respects and they need to fix their shit in a big way going forward.

their last game (FF13-3) scored an abysmal 5.9 with 36% of people rating it 4 or less, so i don't know why this is such a surprise, really.

In my case i also havent played it yet but i watched 2 full playthroughs and 1 is still ongoing.

The first playthrough by rajmangaminghd made the game look god awful to me. He was forcing the main story progression and just using up his items because he was so underleveled. His playthrough made me hate the game.

I watched a second playthrough by ffxv and he played way better than rajman but still rushing thru just the main story. So to me then the game was just average.

I am now watching jesse cox play through it and i love it. And i think that lies in the fact that if i were to play ffxv, my play would be similar to his. I dont like rushing thru the main story and want to enjoy doing side quests. And his playthrough expanded the world that the 2 above didnt even touch on.

I watched brotherhood and kingsglaive to get backstory before watching any playthrough. Honestly, i really believe they just pulled kingsglaive cutscene and maybe even gameplay on the part insomnia is falling just so they could sell a 'movie' to recoup their already bloated production cost.

Maybe that could be a dlc playing as a group of kingsglaive and playing as the main character in the movie in the end.

I also hate they made character arcs into dlc. Seems they gutted it because they couldnt make it work with their forced story.

The story for me at least started off strong about the group of 4. But i never once believed the claimed romance between lunafreya and noctis. In jesse's playthrough, there is more connection built with iris.
But the story falls off a cliff in the middle as they just couldnt make it progress properly without just outright forcing it.

I like how they did ardyn but i didnt like the final battle. Why couldnt he play with the 4 characters in a battle first just to mock them then stun them like he did in the cutscene to activate the second phase and he could be in his daemon form then.

The ending when i watched the 2 playthroughs had no connection with me. So it was meh. Jesse hasnt gotten there but at least he is showing more character development in his playthrough.

Will i play it? Yes. But i wait for price drops and dont really care about being first.

Thats my take on it.

i didn't watch brotherhood yet, i saw kingsglaive and was completely WOWED by the graphics, it truly was mindblowing, out of this world. just the directing was largely bad but i put it down to being a side project. i didn't for a second suspect that the game itself would get more than it's own healthy dose of the worst parts of kingsglaive and more. i mean i would give kingslaive like 7/10 just for the goddamn WOW factor (see, i am kind when things at least TRY to impress me).

my personal playstyle is, well, my GotY is like Life is Strange (a talking sim) and i have avoided Far Cry like the plague (i dont do fetchquests/achievements) and i find Fallout 3 and Skyrim ultimately unplayable (i only deal with games that put more than 5 seconds of thought into their script)

if FFXV was written a lot better, directed a lot better and polished a lot better then i would love to give it a high rating. at that point the gameplay systems wouldn't even matter. i mean, at that point it would be "everything is pretty good except the combat system which isn't very good at all." but right now i'm looking at "everything is pretty bad actually."

i will check out jessie a bit (jessie is cool) but imma gonna wait for adam koebal probably coz he talks a lot of game design when he plays games. idk at this point i would probably just be grasping for confirmation, i already have my own opinions lol

If you want to ask for a grade from in terms of what ive watched, i would only give this 7/10 as the highest.
Comparing it to ffxiii, i watched and personally played it. I hated playing that game. Didnt even finish it on my own.

I am still biased to ff7 as my favorite of the series, followed by ff6. Then ff8. Ill place ffxv as a tie with ffx and ffxii in terms of ranking. Tactics also places higher than ff8 but thats not part of the series.

I do agree with you, the story was weak. Forced as it pushed to the end. The ending also didnt make sense to me as to why the 3 needed to stand guard outside and not stay inside the throne room. Once noctis starts his ceremony he is already dead. So there was no point leaving the 3 outside the citadel.

Thats my biggest gripe with the story, they only killed for the sake of killing or attempt at shock value. Lots of enemies even just up and disappeared because ardyn made them daemons. Why bother introducing them then if we only see them in the movie and maybe a scene or 2.

Loki also just died during his first battle with you. Really? No means of escaping or ejecting like the turks to fight another day?

The tombs of the kings also felt lacking. Just, here my weapon. The astral king didnt even speak to noct before bestowing him his weapon. Why doesnt ignis/gladio talk about the history of the king you are headed to as you are in the zone to give you an idea of why this king even deserved to become an astral being in the first place.

Oh and aranea came out of the blue and when she first appeared my first reaction was sh*t dont tell me thats Lightning in this universe.

I didnt like life is strange, but i also dont like gta, WoW, farcry or assassins creed. I tried watching playthroughs even jesses for some of these but it just doesnt hook me.

I liked shadows of mordor, arkham city, bayonetta and metal gear (except the overly long cutscenes). Just to give an idea of what i lean towards playing.

i don't even bother to comment on the story. my friend pointed out that most FF stories are a bit shit and certainly aren't known for making a whole lot of sense. at the end of the day, people will always like one story over another for their own reasons.

personally FF9 bored me to tears, FFX was awesome for its first half (until you realise there is actually no plot surrounding seymour whatsoever), FF8 was an annoying mess that i absolutely hated and never understood but i still watched the end sequence like 10 times that night, and i didn't mind FF13 except for the abrupt ending (and the fact that it was completely unplayable from a gameplay perspective). FF6 is just great except for when it dwindles out near the end and FF7 is like, there is literally nothing on earth that even comes close, i have tears in my eyes even thinking of it. but the point is, different people will enjoy different stories nomatter what.

as for FFXV, i mean, the story is that you visit some summons to aquire them (forget about the tombs and the military bases, those were done so poorly that they're literally not even story), then you travel to Luna, but she dies, then you travel to the imperial base to get the crystal back, it warps you 10 years into the future (but for no reason) then 30 minutes later you finish the game by killing izuna, who was incidentally an unhappy chap who hated your royal bloodline. i mean, its fine. the story is fine - the game is supposed to be about travelling and compansionship and everything else on the journey. just the execution of literally everything, including the story telling (and excluding the selfcontained cutscenes), was very poor

What I've found about most JRPGs is the character design and the setting are what really get me hooked and the story just needs to be not-terrible enough to support their fun-ness. Chrono Trigger is a great example of this, the story is god-awful and makes no sense but it is locally enjoyable and cutesy enough that it works and I have loved that game since the minute I started playing it for the first time. I think FF7's story is pretty... nonsensical also, but it was just compelling enough that I got completely hooked on the city of Midgar and the contrasting naturey places as a setting.

My issue with most JRPGs since like... a long time ago is that the stories get in the way of enjoying the game. I think part of this is that I must be disconnected from the new norms in the genre, and another part is that forced voiceacting means it's hard to avoid how annoying a bad story is without turning off the sound entirely.

I kind of wish Square would revisit the SaGa series. Those games largely threw plot out the window and focused on setting and weird mechanics, and I really love them. SaGa Frontier is probably one of the most unfinished, unpolished games I've ever seen, and it is one of my favorite games of all time

i was always a fan of family guy and it really taught me that just having exceptional characters and exceptional writing you can have endless entertainment, story aside. it doesn't really matter one bit what the characters are doing, if they are well written.

the story in FF7 isn't nonsensical at all, when it was vague it was vague not just for us but for the characters in the game also, it was vague and weird because it was supposed to be. look, cloud's spazzing out, he's in a coma, shit, the hell? come on man, pull yourself together (barret just wanna punch smt and protect the planet yo). sometimes shit is weird, it aint change nothin' tho.

i never heard of saga maybe i'll look it up sometime. i still need to revisit the star ocean series also (and the distant sound of some Wild Arms soundtrack)
