On that note, my windrunner is pretty pro now, I am looking forward to play (grind, really) another versatile hero that can range from both support to carry, but this time I want a hero with strong team AOE spell. A lot of times I pick WR which is great single target, but sometime you just want some big aoe in teamfights that tends to dominate this meta's early game, and WR feels a bit wispy in that regard. Whom should I play? Remember it needs to be a semi-carry type hero so I can end games with it.

That sounds like the definitions of Gyro and SF. Gyro was nerfed due to being the most flexible carry in the game. I ran it with great success as a support at 5.3k before the recent nerfs. Just in general a good skill set.

Going to have to plug my girl Naga. She fits a lot of your requirements although her damage can be a bit lacking in team fights. Naga can excel in any role except solo offlane and has excellent AoE teamfight control as a support, can transition from a support to a core, and is never scared of taking games late. She is one of the best at pushing a lead in pubs because if you are even slightly ahead in map control then you can either farm the entire map or deward everything with very little risk. Her high skill ceiling also ensures that there's always room to improve.
Downsides are that pubs won't be the best at working with her strengths as either a core or a support, and there is some room to be counter picked (in particular, Lion can slow down core Naga by a lot).

Leshrac if he's still playable has tons of aoe for teamfights. He can also be played in either the support or core roles.
Other than that, I dont see any heroes that have teamfight impact, can be played as support and core, and have the strength to carry a game.
The suggestions of Gyro and SF are very solid imo. They can only be played as cores afaik, but they are very strong in most games.

While not a right-clicker-core, you could consider Warlock. He has strong AOE / teamfight, makes use of farm (core), is not useless without farm (support) and is decent at taking objectives. I think he is also a flexible laner.

wait how does sf support am I missing something?
I'd like a hero that I can first pick and it won't screw up the rest of the team composition even if they pick 4 carry or 4 supports. I think Gyro might be O-K at support/offlane as I used to run it alot before the barrage nerf, but now he's kind of locked in as a carry.
I need someone that can take these early engagements w/o much fuss, and can play from both ahead and behind.
honestly I'm thinking Kunkka but what else do we have on the table?

Precious few heroes are capable of what you're looking for. Gyro, Leshrac & Naga would be prime candidates if we were talking 6.84. With the arrival of 6.85 and everyone clowning around trying to figure out the meta, who knows?

Wraith king, Silencer, and Earth Shaker are the heroes I play a lot that can go almost anywhere.

Well as people said before, there are fewer and fewer hero's that fit most roles.
You could consider something like tusk or bara. But a carry that can also support yeah, then you are looking at naga or gyro, maybe lesh because he can safelane farm as well as play support.
But IF is taking out the versatility of most hero's because it was too strong in CM.

What about Venomancer? He used to be played mid a fair amount, might be viable offlane now, was even run as carry a few times by teams. So can be core or support, and his ult is huge damage, especially once you get aghs. Aghs/octarine venomancer is ridiculous, every fight you have your 1800 damage aoe ult.
So great team fight, flexible, won't fuck things up by being picked by you.

hmm veno i like quite a lot actually. I also play the aid snake frequently. I might get back to it.
Maybe I'll play more timbersaw offlane, yeah I know it's not a support ;(

Solo supporting with Kunkka just sounds like a recipe for having no fun at all. I think the heroes that best fit your bill are Silencer, Veno, Pugna, Shaker, Tusk, Lesh, Warlock or Nyx. If you want to win MMR, I'd suggest Nyx.

I agree, ideally you want to use Kunka's setup to do something with it, the hero is somehwat low impact if you dont coordinate things like sunstrike with x-marks or hit reliably multi-man boats.
Silencer sounds like the man to go for you. Can even somewhat carry very late after being support all game. Always high impact if played right and paired up with a decent initiator. Especially in pubs where global silence means that the enemies team runs around like a pack of headless chickens, at least at my measly 3k mmr lvl.
Shaker is barely touched and still super good and can go offlane as well as support. Tbh he's still broken in pubs where no-one ever picks defensive supports, roaming es is a recipe to win 3 lanes and still have a massive impact mid to late. Tusk is more or less the same story.
Gyro and Lina are both good as cores as well as supports, Lina is more flexible but gyro fits your aoe-description better.
Wyvern is one of the best lategame supports there is. Not really useable as a core though, but I'm at like 70% wr with her and I dont even play her that much.
