do you play 5th or 4th?
I hate buying wards but I don't mind killing shit (i.e. smoke and dust) hahaha
Life is run, it is dance, it is fast, passionate and BAM!, you dance and sing and booze while you can for now is the time and time is mine. Smile and laugh when still can for now is the time and soon you die!

most of the time 5th.

I find it hard personally to play 4 in pubs, as I experience physical pain whenever wards are in stock but not bought....I'm a bit over the top with it, but I don't want to be nagging my other support every several minutes. so i often just buy them myself, then put them out when i should be just farming my blink/core items.

Also as I am ending up having to first pick in the majority of games, I dont want to pick someone who struggles to 5 position like sand king, lina, wk or rubick etc. who can be great in the 4 position. so even if we get a second support, im usually the one more suited to 5-ing.

i will say there are also alot of bad habits of support players. here are a few examples

1. bad ward placement for the mid player vs the opposition which has a high probability to gank him
typical example would be radiant vs dire and the radiant supports place a ward bottom rune and the opposing team has a venge or chen. if the radiant supports were a jungler and a hard support, but the hard carry was capable of farming 1v1 vs the solo offlaner, there is almost no need or requirement for there to be a ward at the bottom lane as the solo hard carry has almost no probability of dying within the first 6 minutes unless he was trilaned which often times is very rare even to this day.
this often leads to the solo mid player dying to a smoke gank by the 2 roaming supports from dire's safelane and the supports that are not needed at bot lane, stagnant and farming jungle. whereas if the supports on radiant were anything competent they would anticipate that gank and counter gank, actively gank the opposing mid to secure the advantage where needed, or prioritize the focus on mid to keep the mid laner from dying and or surviving the laning stage. since shadow fiend is now some sort of new meta, this is quite common, in all mmr levels alike. most SF's require rune control and where else would be the best place to gank the mid player? at top rune when he goes and gets it.
...

a lot of good points in the whole post for support play in general.

I try and pressure other areas/lanes as soon as i know my carry cant be contested by their offlaner. however usually just smoke mid at semi-random timing (usually just wait for creep equilibrium to mean dont have to tower dive).

If supports are missing then mid should always go for their safelane rune over offlane rune, therefore if you just smoke straight past mid and go for their safelane rune, worst case scenario their mid stays mid and you get a free kill on a support/jungler going for it instead. Just need to work out the rough time it takes to get from approx pull camp -> opposite rune with smoke so can start doing this in games :D

also yeah saving the 1st non-offlane ward I've grown to appreciate the importance of. Means I can drop a lane ward for carry to spot rotations at about ~3 min onwards (i tried later, but often 'issues' would force me back to base/tp to countergank after 3 min, then i dont want to walk all the way back top literally just to ward). Anything earlier just seems a waste unless you know they are going to aggro offlane. rune wards almost always just seem really bad nowadays with double rune.

Yeah I agree OP. I feel like I'm ranked much higher then my actual skill level and that most of the time I get carried by my team. I can only half relate to posts were people are talking about carrying entire teams or having awful teammates every game.

Supporting, buying wards and not being a dick goes a long way to making a better dota experience. + you don't get awful games. At least in my experience. Maybe when I hit 4k I'll change my mind.

(Oh and another good piece of general advice. Don't play when you're overly fatigued, tired, anxious, distracted, etc. Your performance will suffer and you will also probably find the game more stressful. While it is very hard to step away from another game after you've just finished one, making it a habit is something that can really help out)
Stop browsing and do whatever it is you're supposed to do. TL will still be here when you get back

I found that when telling people to do something or buy items they're more likely to listen to you if you add a few words for the reason.
-buy a bkb because of lion
-buy mkb because of blur
-buy forcestaff because of cogs
-don't push X doesn't have bb

I recall back when I played WoW, we had this one boss on farm status already but he was giving us hard time anyway that week. This boss required rotation of several players interrupting his spells and on our latest attempt someone missed their interrupt which snowballed out of control and lead to wipe.

This is when our raid leader got really aggravated and started ranting so I decided to take the blame even though it wasn't my mistake so we could move the fuck on. Instead of bitching at me his mood improved vastly and he traded me enough gold to pay for my repairs and some extra for manning up, then we killed the boss on the next attempt.

Haven't tried applying this to DotA pubs but I guess it could work sometimes.

I'm also a pretty mediocre player at 4k+ and try to climb by picking and doing whats needed and not being a dick.

Whats not fun though is first picking a squishy support into 1 protect 4 dicks and other team taking dumb shit like Slark... Even when this happens I just try not to get caught out of position too much when trying to maintain vision so team doesn't get mad and burn just about all my gold to support consumables.

When I play solo ranked the first thing I usually say is:

Hi all, glhf
We need some carries and some supports who wants to play what? I can do either.

It makes such a huge difference. Literally this alone wins games because we end up with an actual team and not a hodgepodge of stupid heroes.

2.2k mmr here. It's basically all about teamwork and not doing dumb shit because your allies are pissing you off.

IMO to climb in ranked you need to be able to control the late game. You need to be able to somewhat carry, and not rely too much on your ally carry. Its easy to dominate early mid with clock or supportish heroes, but many times your carries may not be good and it all goes to waste. That's the reason why ta/meepo are good heroes for ranked. You can be in control for all aspects of the game.

Agreed on you highly really. In order to climb solo mmr effectively without uber good at the game (after the party mmr get split) is either mad grinding specific mid hero from a new account or like what the OP blogged. Too bad i dont have the temper to 'babysit' the emotions from these random strangers on internet...

Great post. I feel I went along these lines when I wasn't having the best troll game, and we had a qop who was running to town on their team. There was a roshan, and there was a bit of indecision relating to who should take the aegis (qop himself was somewhat on the fence). One of the support players on the team was muted but vocal, as he added me on friends mid game and tried to get my reasoning. My reasoning was simple "Sorry man. At the time, I thought it was the best decision since I am the one being focused, and me being a bait/them using everything on me with an aegis is much more powerful than someone who is already running to town on the other team with an aegis. In hindsight though, maybe it was better on qop". The guy basically thanked me for my response, and gave me a commend

I completely agree with everything you've said (more or less), although I do think it applies less in lower MMRs. One problem I find in my MMR (~3k) is that there are often games where you've managed to get everyone working together and you have a good chance to win, but then one of your cores initiates a fight with no warning and either loses the game or sets you back significantly. The problem is always with initiators/gankers (void, qop, storm, sb for e.g.), and I don't know how to stop it happening. I think the issue here is that players in this MMR just don't know what their hero can/can't do, and you can't babysit them the entire time without being an asshole.

Definitely disagree, although yes it's harder. You have to challenge them to think without making it seem like you are; something to the effect of "Let's wait until we're in a big group and catch them off guard"

Yeah this is pretty important in my opinion. Just today I was like "Weaver you need to get a bkb or manta I think", and he responded with the typical "stfu they have 1 stun". Then I reminded him they had global silence and he was like, "oh yeah oops, you're right"

Everything thinks they are the best player in the game and sometimes giving criticism or tips can be tough. If you give valid reasons they kind of have no choice but to agree or listen.
