I was always a creative guy and decided to pursue my career in game development. It’s not the worst idea, huge industry, well paid job. With years I realized time and time again my lower social skills and being unfit for precise technical work (always making little mistakes, getting carried by ideas). This was the right choice.
There are many ways to breakthrough, but it all comes more or less to “make your own games” or “mod stuff”. Anyway I am like other people who work in the industry wants to realize their ideas. To be successful you don’t have to make something big, even small stuff can be a hit. Sounds great, but original and polished design, idea does not come so easily. You have to rethink and test a lot. Even then if you have an idea you need to develop it properly. Digital media sounds cool, but if you’re not a programmer yourself it’s really difficult to do it without friends or money. Being artistic guy tabletop games sounds like a good choice, but this opportunity came just few years ago with Kickstarter.
Whole crowdfunding tabletop market is really cool. Choice of different look and original concept games siding apart from the usual generic shop games. On the other side there are negative factors. Without obvious scams it is so too easy mishandle design, to push through bad illustrations or simply put up bad product with good presentation. Quality is not guaranteed, so people have to stick to assured and known developers.
So I recently finished my first project. It is a simple historical themed card game. It’s live on “Indiegogo” and ran into exposure problems. The game is pretty good I have no regrets doing it. I know I can launch it again later and I will publish it someday. Despite that I have many more ideas that I want to share and I want to be a part of kickstarter developer community, reach out to people who would enjoy my works. So first I want to get feedback from my fellow broodwar, dota 2 fans. Of course obvious points are to get your game on “Kickstarter”, invest in promotional video and get more exposure, but maybe you have something else to say or ask.
