It pains me to see the sorry state of affairs of the SC2 General Discussion worsen over time. Complaints about this unit and that ability spread far and wide, unable to be contained to the proper place in the designated balance thread, and unable to be reined in by the mods with very careful language and intonations. The posters, instead of upholding the greatness that makes Team Liquid the haven of intelligent discussion that it is, are forced to employ all their time preying on each other and riding the crest of the nonexistent apocalypse, arguing over whether StarCraft will die with a bang or a whimper, or whether it will die at all.

I think it is agreed by everyone involved - the mods, the posters, and Blizzard themselves - that this exponential amount of negativity concentrated onto a dedicated StarCraft site is in the present a great hindrance to the community, and therefore, whoever could find a way of restoring the balance in a fair, lasting and efficient method, would deserve to be crowned the Savior of StarCraft II and succeed Dustin Browder as the lead game designer for all future projects.

My intention is to propose a stable set of units and abilities that are still able to be used dynamically in an increasingly diverse number of ways over time. This proposal is as follows:

Protoss

1. Protoss has been removed from the game.

I have noticed an increasing discomfort with players both viewing and playing against the Protoss race. Numerous tournaments have come up where the viewers have been observed to be rooting for the Terran and Zerg players, and many finals have had significantly lower viewership numbers than predicted as a result of both finalists playing Protoss. It seems that overall, Protoss is negatively impacting the viewer count, and its removal would help the viewer count grow as Terran and Zerg advance higher in the standings, unhindered by Protoss competitors.

Furthermore, it is known that Protoss is a great cause of ladder anxiety, and many new players have also expressed discontent of their own due to games against Protoss players. With this change, players no longer need fear cannon rushes, Oracle harass, countless proxy pylons all over the map, and an enemy being able to rebuild his entire base quickly with a single hidden probe.

Finally, by focusing on only two races, viewership of StarCraft would increase due to increasing comprehension of the game, as Protoss mechanics no longer have to be explained or mentioned.

Zerg

1. Overlord and Overseer base speed has been increased to 10.

Zerg players have an inherent disadvantage in their scouting patterns as their chosen scout, the Overlord, has always taken too long to find the enemy and see his strategy. With this change, I hope to see more aggressive overlord placement, and Zerg willingness to expose their overlords to enemy fire. This will open a dynamic array of options for the Zerg: for instance, they can quickly deny building placements by creating creep in various spots, or even on the natural expansion if a fast lair is built.

2. Drone supply increased from 1 to 2.

By making Zerg workers cost twice the supply, I hope to advocate less droning and more attacking for Zerg, to suit the aggressive, mobile nature of their race. One drone can now be exchanged for 4 zerglings rather than 2, meaning more viability for Zergling-heavy strategies, or even investment in higher tech as a Drone is now supply-equivalent to a Roach, and Infestor, and a Mutalisk.

Terran

1. Refineries have been removed from the game.

I feel that Terrans are too bogged down in the amount of choices their race has. For example, the confusing conflict between bio and mech has led some to adopt hybrid strategies, such as marine-tank, in the hopes that they will do something new. This style allows Terrans to focus on the key strengths of their race: Marines and MULEs. All macro will now be aligned to producing Command Centers, SCV's, MULEs, Marines and Barracks, and all economy will now be invested into either expansions or Marine-centric compositions.

Furthermore, this eliminates all Factory play from the game, which is seen in streams as cumbersome and slow. Marine armies will be able to end the game in ten minutes in either victory or defeat, and TvT's will now resolve based on the players' skillful micro rather than playing a game of reverse chicken with siege tanks.

I do admit that I gain nothing of value from this proposal, but only mean to advance the community and allure a game which I love sincerely, and one which I wish to see prosper for years and possibly decades to come. I have not played StarCraft II in many years, and I do not intend to start anytime soon.

I read the title, and immediately scrolled to the final line to confirm that you are, indeed, referencing what I thought you were. Very cute.

How about a unit that could eat zerglings to protect the rest of the community?

Yeah! And maybe this hypothetical unit could emit some sort of black spore cloud that makes anything inside it invulnerable to ranged attacks. Y'know, to protect the Zergling community it loves so much?

Honestly, I feel like you tried too hard to force this reference Sentinel. It's almost like you just read this today in your literature class and then decided, "Hey, I'd be super cool if I posted this on Teamliquid!" I think the problem is that you didn't match Swift's subtlety and you made it obvious that you were being satirical far too early on in the post. Could've been a 5/5 post though.

I like how swarmhosts are suddenly relevant after being deemed worthless before. It kind of makes me think the game might be... evolving on its own? Without Blizzard buffing/nerfing anything? It seems cray, but you know what? I like that Blizzard takes a long time to change stuff and lets the "meta-game" evolve through people's innovation (or Innovation's innovation) and it weeds out all the whiners who aren't creative enough to win without having a how-to guide that guarantees success and cry when they lose more than half their games, and also that strings of rhetorical questions followed by a run-on sentence is not a very good way to communicate, but it'll do for now.

I read it a while back actually.

See the problem is, I get these great ideas and think "this sounds hilarious in my head, time to make a blog post!" but then with the balance-related ones what ends up happening is I keep asking myself "Will this get me banned?"

I'd love to make it as subtle as possible, I'd love to try it out, but I've been accidentally banned twice before and I don't want to take another chill break. If I tried to be Swift word for word (except change the wording because it was, after all, the wording that gave me away), I'd definitely get accused of a bunch of balance whine. Not that I don't love it, I love when my jokes go over people's heads, I just end up getting nervous.

It's encouraging to hear that the idea has already found some support. I've been assured by an American aquaintance that little zerglings are most delicious and can provide as much as 50 points of energy (if they are well fed and looked after in the first few minutes of their life).

God, if I had a penny for every time I posted something on TL that was either "too subtle" or "not subtle enough", I'd have like almost a dollar or something. There is no fine line. No matter what, you're doing it wrong.

Well, the most intuitive way to telling a joke that makes people laugh, is to tell a thousand that don't.

Everything you see, like literally everything, you, JimmyJRaynor, see anywhere, you think is a sign of SC2's "inevitable decline". The sky is a light blue? SC2 must be declining. You have to preheat the oven to 375? Blizzard is failing with SC2. The extra student was Sakakibara's aunt? This is why we see less and less tournaments in SC2. My cat has rabies? No wonder all the teams are disbanding. The conservation of mass states that matter in a closed system cannot be reduced or increased? Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I guess that's why progamers are retiring.

The truth is, nothing lasts forever, so if you want to see a game "die" in terms of public interest relative to popular trends, then all you have to do is wait. I mean, for fuck's sake, WarCraft 2 was an incredibly fun game, and all the gamer nerds wanted to play it, but now, only a tiny handful of people still play.

Now, if a progamer or a featured blogger wrote this and titled it "Changes SC2 needs to make", and it received little attention, then I could see you having a point, although, it should be noted that forum activity is not directly related to the success or failure of the SC2 servers in maintaining their population. However, since [UoN]Sentinel is not really "known", and the title of the blog isn't inherently intriguing because it doesn't have some sensationalist ring to it, I think the level of response here is aptly appropriate, and you need to stop being a conspiracy-theorist whiner in the MMA and SC2 threads.
