Remaking Brood War in HD is not a bad idea.

I personally find Brood War very aesthetically appealing, but there's no ignoring the fact that it's an old game, with a simple increase in pixel density and in this case a resolution change and Brood War looks as young and beautiful as it ever did!

I can already hear the heards of people screaming over the internet because of the resolution change so before I continue I'd like to say that I'm not actually an advocate of any kind of a resolution change when it comes to the player's point of view because that could potentially have a detrimental impact on the competative gameplay of Brood War, something that should most definitely be kept exactly as it is, if Brood War HD were to ever come to fruition.

The difference isn't significant and immediately apparent, but it definitely adds a crisp feel to the game and also breathes in some new life into the game

What I would like to see added/changed and what I would like kept the same in a potential Broox War HD:

-Increased pixel density.
-Player screen resolution kept the same.
-Replay - spectator resolution slider (Replays can be watched in many different resolutions - the ability to zoom in and out.)
-More replay functionality (Completely optional!)
-Game mechanics would stay entirely the same.
-Backwards compatability to any non-HD version of BW.
-Some of the private servers such as ICCUP and FISH available under de facto settings and an anti-hack program built-in as well.

I personally think that with these functionalities the re-released version would easily warrant a price tag of 15-20$. Which would most likely cover the development cost + add some revenue for Blizzard and raise interest in Brood War. Win/Win/Win

I know that this is a pipe dream, but this potentially easily achievable remake has potential monetary prospects, could also do wonders for the Brood War's scene.

Purely theoretical. Yes.
Hard to pull off. Probably not.
Would it sell. It probably would.

Will this ever happen? I don't know, but the recent success of the re-released Age of Empires 2 in HD most certainly shows that there is interest in old classic remastered RTS.

I doubt it will happen, but Blizzard could do that to get more money.

Blizzard doesn't care about old games :[
And sadly they probably won't let an independent company remake BW either.

It took me five minutes to realize that those were disruptor webs, had not seen one in a long long time ..
But the only way to get this distributed to a lot of people would be to give it away for free. I dont see it working otherwise. Or you get it for free with legacy of the void.

btw the blog you are linking to .. it has always puzzled me how they let the purple protoss get a battlecruiser army and hydras/ultralisk ...
Where is my ACE flair

HD BW, fish compatibility, built in antihack and matchmaking.. only catch is they only allow fighting spirit (;
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Fans did it for Heroes of Might and Magic 3:

They even fixed annoying things about the UI... I'm sure someone could do it, if Blizzard didn't throw a fit.

HD Brood War would be flippin' amazing.

I would gladly swallow that catch for an HD BW. Haha.

While your list isn't bad by any means, cmon, might as well escape the fantasy into reality. It's not going to happen lol. Blizzard is too focused on SCII and likely won't go back to do some minor changes(like you said) in BW. Other thing is that some things in the game were fixed a different way then they would fix them due to time constraints(it was in one of the developer's blog) which is why walling is hard to do and such. Either way, BW is still fun to play so whether we ever get these changes or not, I'm not too concerned.

Anyone have any idea what kind of imbalances could emerge from changing screen resolution? Personally, it's the one thing that gets on my nerves with the game; I hate having to work my art on a small canvas.

The screenshots posted are a bit misleading. The HD resolution would come from sprites remade in HD, not by zooming out.

I know that. I read in the OP that he was VERY averse to changing the player's screen resolution and that others thought the same. I was curious as to whether this would affect balance in any real way as I think was implied, or if it just makes the game easier to play.

It wouldn't change balance as much as the gameplay as in it's much easier to see what's going on around your base or even just being able to move the mouse to your structures and make units. I'm not saying that players would move away from what they're comfortable with and already able to perform really well but I think this change would be quite big. Having said that, as endy mentioned, resolution doesn't mean zooming out but rather making structures and units have more pixels, sprites, etc... so to answer your question, I think it would make the game easier imo.

It seems like you think that increasing pixel density is quite easy for Blizzard

There is SC2BW (also an extension mod now too which is nice) which is a decent HDBW imo. It doesn't even change much in 16: 9 compared to seeing the game in 4:3 (and SC2BW also works in 4:3 too because of the SC2 engine :D)

i actually love the small resolution of bw. but i get that some dont like it. imo, they should keep the zoomed in view but sharpen the pixels and just make everything look cleaner. newer models would be great too. oh...and new units...would spice things up!

ya, it got released a long time back(several months to a year or so I think). It apparently sold well. Considering how popular the game was(I played AOE2 a ton as well), I'm not surprised.

-Increased pixel density.
-Player screen resolution kept the same.

These are at odds with each other, you have to do one or the other. If you mean keep the same amount of map shown, while having more resolution, then that requires remaking all of the sprites, and also would mean having access to and understanding of the code. We don't have access to the code, they probably don't have anyone who still knows the code, and neither Blizzard nor us really has the time or ability or desire to do that.

On the other hand, watching replays in HD is fun and I do it quite often, and I sometimes cast in 16 too, as does Sonic (although he does it oddly).

Gearbox is remaking Homeworld in HD. They didn't make the game originally, but they read the code, understood it, and then started working.

"Not understanding the code" is not an excuse. It's right there, they can devote a week or two to reading it. If they wanted to do it, they could.

Well it would be nice. Also i would really like the Obs UI from SC2 into BW. It's really hard to watch BW now because you don't really know what's going on if you're watching this casually.

I got attached to that production tab. Would be awesome to have it in bw.
