This morning started out wonderfully. My class seemed to understand my math lesson quite well, and I got through the material even faster than I expected, so I decided to end class early (one of the benefits of teaching at the university level, rather than in secondary school).
As I was packing up all of my belongings, the students started filing out of my classroom. There was a group of four stragglers, all chatting about something. Then I overheard "SK Telecom T1".
My ears immediately perked up, and I got curious as to how they were familiar with the Starcraft pro scene without recognizing my White-Ra laptop wallpaper that was constantly projected on the overhead, and not making the connection when I wish them "good luck, have fun" any time they take a quiz or exam.
I waited for another few seconds, and I heard them mention the Korean team again. It was unmistakable. They were close by, and I was looking forward to having a casual discussion about Starcraft. They were near me, so I chose to speak up: "It's really too bad that Rain and Parting both got knocked out of WCS."
My heart sank. I'm trying to educate these college kids, and they're wasting their time watching LoL instead of wasting their time watching Starcraft? How absurd! Kids these days play the worst games...
So we chatted for a bit about e-sports, and one of the students admitted "I don't have the APM to play Starcraft". Since he had clearly admitted that LoL was an inferior game to Starcraft, I told them that I wouldn't fail them for playing LoL. They thanked me graciously and we went our separate ways for the day.
I have a good rapport with my students, and they thought it was cool that I play Starcraft and Diablo. It ended up being a nice conversation where none of us was uncomfortable. And I was clearly joking about LoL being a terrible game.
I saw the thumbnail for a Youtube video called CJ Entus Leblanc pentakill.
My heart sank. How the mighty have fallen, is what I thought. I feel your pain.
Korea used to be about StarCraft: Brood War and King Of Fighters. Now it's about grindy MMORPGS and moba games.
Edit: Also, what an "old man" moment that was. The kids were talking about games, you tried to join in, but they were talking about a new and shitty game, while you thought they were talking about an old one.
2nd edit: I know, I know - they're not "kids" because they're going to university. They are young adults. But still.
And who can blame them, SKT completely wreck in League and are the new generation of superstars. That's just the way things move on in the world I guess. Not everyone can have a knowledge of the glorious BW history unfortunately. :I
However it's nice to see these organizations expand their fanbases beyond the ol' BW fans.
5/5 and 4/5 to your students. Just need to learn about some history and they're set.
I would expect people to at least do a little research on the history of such a venerable team throughout e-Sports, regardless of whether they "can't play SC2". Guess this is just the way things progress, the legends of the past are now just legends which don't resonate with the newer generation of e-Sports.
Great blog, but the spoilers almost caused me to drop it ahaha.

Ah come on now, how are they going to know of this in the first place though? Do you automatically research every team that wins a tournament for their history from 10 years ago from a game that isn't even being played anymore professionally? (no disrespect to SOSPA ) To them it's probably just another Korean team that wrecks white guys.
I wonder how many SC2 EG fans could name their 2009 CS lineup. Just sayin'.
Eh. I'm sure same would have happened to me as well - stopped following SKT completely after that disastrous switch and naturally know nothing about SC2. Ironically it is LoL championships that actually put SKT back on my radar.
One time I swear I heard a group of koreans talking about Kang Min, Park Sung Joon, "ultralisk", etc etc. I listened for a little bit just to make sure I wasn't hearing things. So I thought they were talking about starcraft, walked up to them and asked if they were, and they said "nah, oh this guy plays starcraft though!" but I didn't stay around to talk to them
anyways moral of my story is that korean males know something about esports, no matter how small!

Brb telling NiP league fans that they must know the history of counter-strike. Also if you like EG in dota, SC2, FGC or league YOU'D BETTER START RECITING ME THE ROSTER HISTORY OF EG CS OR ELSE.
Not exactly my cup of tea, but LoL is just as worthy as a successor to BW as anything in the market right now. Wish BW would come back but I don't think it's gonna happen.

When it came out, it was kind of bad. I played other RTS games at the time. But it got really good in 2001, and has been getting better since.
I think it's the best RTS game that exists now, and that it has been for a while. What is hilarious about that opinion? Are you saying that LoL is going to get better in the future? I'm glad most people recognized that my intention for this blog was to note my disappointment in not being able to make a Starcraft connection with my students, rather than bash LoL Congrats to SKT for winning LoL by the way.
Also, what's wrong with nested spoilers? I find them useful when trying to set up a cliffhanger or a turn of events, as my peripheral vision tends to spoil punchlines (especially when the later paragraphs include bold or italicized font).

Yes, it's a freshman precalculus class. It's for STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) majors too, so they're somewhat more motivated to learn math since they'll be using it in their higher courses, rather than the *other* precalculus class for *other* majors. My students will be taking at least one more math course after this one.

No, I'm saying that it's funny that you're arguing about the merits of the "quality of the game", when BW was hardly the pinnacle of game quality when it was released. It's popularity had a lot to do with timing of release/packaged multiplayer/low system requirements, not because it was simply "the best game".

I was pleased to discover how easily and naturally my SKT fangirling in SC transitioned to SKT fangirling in League. I like cheering for winners, and of course it just so happened that SKT had the strongest team in Korea when I began watching Champions Summer. SKT dominates every game they touch, so i can always root for them and count on them. #1 esports franchise of all time. And theres always lots of cute, Korean boys. Although not Bisu, Piglet is still adorable <3
Anyway, even though the majority of new SKT LoL fans have little knowledge of its long history of Starcraft domination, I've found many are interested in learning about it. The article TL wrote for the Champions Summer finals detailing the SKT vs KT rivalry was pretty popular on Reddit. I'm always happy to share information about SKT to anyone interested and spread the fandom :D don't be so hard on them, just be willing to tell them more about this awesome team~

God dammit DPB, why aren't I in your math classes?! Being in the dorms+being 4-5 years older than everyone else, I tended to stay out of everyone's way. I was mostly naked and had never talked to this guy before, so it was pretty damn awkward. But I answered him anyway: "Oh, haha, sorry. That'd be Starcraft." To which he replied: "OH! I was mostly naked and had never talked to this guy before, so it was pretty damn awkward. But I answered him anyway: "Oh, haha, sorry. That'd be Starcraft." To which he replied: "OH! I thought it might of been League of Legends. My roommate and I play that all the time. Have you ever played it before? Isn't Starcraft like really old?"
"..." Ya, it got more awkward. "No, I haven't played LoL before, not really my style. I play mostly Starcraft 2, which isn't old. But I do play Starcraft: Broodwar from time to time, which is definitely old. 15 years old actually. And still fun to play and watch." "Oh, ok. Cool. Maybe I'll look into it." "Please do, it's the greatest game ever. Seriously. You ever want to play hit me up. A bunch of us here at school play all the time."
He never hit me up...
What school do you go to? Just wondering since I saw some guy watching some SC2 vods on GOM yesterday in the computer lab (or whatever it's called these days) but didn't say anything to them because I was short on time.
If you were Master or GM at mathematics, you wouldn't need to take my damn precalculus course -____-' You would have entered into college at the calculus level.

Then I would tell everyone else that I would kick the smurf out for ruining everyone else's grading curve... but in reality I wouldn't do anything and just give him whatever grade he wants.

if you only had those 5 ranks (below Masters), they'd still think you were talking about LoL
I know how you felt, the day after the LoL season 3 championship, everyone in the hallways was talking about SKT T1, it made me feel so sad, how they could talk about SKT not knowing the history, the fame, the glory.....truly are the end times upon us

Oh shit... I have an SKT jersey! Not that I'll be wearing it to class, but now I'll be fearing the worst instead of the best (or the bisu or the boxer) whenever I wear it x.x

(hell, I don't even play that game and I was watching because some of my friends were watching)

Isn't that better than them not talking about the organisation at all? Even if the majority of people don't go back and learn about the history of the team, there are going to be at least a handful that do that wouldn't have if they hadn't heard of the LoL team.
I had a very similar experience at my school. I'm in my third year at university, though I transferred to a new school, and this is my first year here. I have yet to make many friends, and it's hard for me to start conversation with people because not many people here seem to be in line with my interests or activities.
In my Asian culture class, I overheard a group of three friends talking about something familiar: pro gaming. And I heard team names like LGIM and SKT1 being thrown around, so I decided to be confident and approach them, asking who their favorite players were. Sure enough, they were discussing the LoL teams, and only one of them even knew what Starcraft was. I was sorely disappointed. I invited them to watch code S with me one night to show them, but I could tell they were a bit lost. I tried explaining, but they were annoyed at the concept of such a taxing game.
Let's just say i was really not too happy about that. I called them casuals.
My coworker next to me just put a SKT T1 Sign on his cubicle because they won in League. He never followed them before the finals and acts like he is their biggest fan. *I hate posers*.

Yeah, jumping on the bandwagon... oh well. At least they're not jumping on any KT bandwagon ^^
