One day iTzSnypah's watching SGDQ; MBM makes his way to the couch and starts running Pokemon Leaf Green. Awe struck iTzSnypah thinks 'man this looks fun I want to try'.

MISTAKE

So far in all of my runs (26, not including all of the resets to get a good decent Squirtle) I've only gotten past Cerulean City twice and both of those times I've gotten as far as I know (Rock Tunnel and then Koga). It's not that I am not capable of passing this test, or that I'm risking it for a few seconds. The game just wants to rick roll me.

For example the last two games have been:

1). Starmie is one mega punch away from death. Your Wartortle has 28HP. Guess what? Foe Starmie used Swift....Critical Hit. Take a dirt nap.

2). Bulbasaur is red-barred, your Wartortle has 43HP and is asleep. You use awakening. Foe Bulbasaur used Vine Whip. It's Super Effective...Critical Hit. You can take a dirt nap now.

I'm to the point where I'm about willing to pick up the Rare Candy in Mt.Moon, and take the ~30 second hit.

E: Fun Fact: From the entering Viridian Forest Screen to talking to Brock out of battle after defeating him is almost always 6 minutes for me.

E2: Here is my latest Run:
This Starmie wasn't using swift at all.

It`s the best one for speedruns. It handles the first gyms well and is strong enough to do the whole game by himself basically.

Slow strats may definatelly be an option. At least until you are more comfortable with the game. Pokemon is a very unforgiving game, and if you want a top time you will just have to handle the trollingless, but you may as well finish a few runs with marathon strats or something first. It beats having a good run wasted by mistakes on your part.

Isn't getting past Cerulean city as simple as grinding out levels or am I missing something here? Try beating the trainers on the S.S. Anne before facing Misty. That's what I did every time with Charmander o-o

You are kinda missing the point. He is doing a speedrun, so the goal is to finish the game as fast as possible. There is a specific route that basically hopes you don't get unlucky on several parts of the game, something that can be very annoying to the runner.

A lot of reasons:

Bubbles is super effective against ground types; that makes starting Pewter City's gym (Brock) at lvl 7 possible.
It can learn Dig, which you get from a Rocket Grunt. That makes Surge possible.
Can learn Surf (no need to get fishing pole/lapras) and Strength. It gets Bite (dark type) at lvl 19, which makes a lot of battles faster. The only pokemon you need to catch are Pidgey (fly) and Rattata (cut) (which you do at the start of the game) and Zapdos (it's OP) (with the master ball). You dont get Flash, as you do the Rock Tunnel Blind (it's actually pretty easy).

Most of all, Torrent it's ability. At under 1/3rd HP Water type moves deal 1/3rd more damage. That makes tons of battles 1 hit instead of 2 (saving all important PP) and a ton of time. For example the route to Mt. Moon takes 1 minute longer if you don't make use of torrent because it takes 8 more attacks.

There is probably a lot more reasons why...

I would've figured that Bulbasaur would be better due to being super effective against the first two gyms and resistant to Surge, but looking back it learns Vine Whip at level 7 instead of 10. :|

Though tbh I can't imagine getting Surf to be too much trouble with Bulba. All you need to do is talk to that guy in Sylph Co. and you have a Lapras.

It's also incredibly slow and has far bigger weakness later on in the game. It's not a good pokemon if you are underleved and forced to use it for the bigger part of the game. Charizard could be better than him, and picking a new pokemon like Nidoking should be even better. Squirtle's strenght is being able finish the whole game fairly easily.

All you have to do is talk to that guy, yes, that's why it is a back up strat. But being able to avoid talking to him saves a few seconds, and that matters in a speedrun.

Out of curiosity, how much time such speedrun takes ? :D I am finishing leaf green right now but I am playing normal like lvling my pokemon, catching as much as possible etc and I want to compare the time spent on it.

For FireRed/LeafGreen, around 2h for the first Elite Four and 4h if you go for the second round.
