As the title suggests, I resigned yesterday from FXOpen, I decided to put my thoughts on paper but then found it best to vlog it rather than type it all out.

Pretty sad you had only realized now that players don't like to market themselves (some - if not most). Boss lead you into a trap lol.

Also, I think Alex Garfield complained about the difficulty of measuring and valuing the marketing of players in relation to product purchases and more. Or was that in relation to events, I can't recall (how they couldn't get the marketing viewership numbers from events to help bolster the marketability of teams). MLG, GOMTV and I think a few others don't release their viewing numbers (or exaggerate like fucking crazy).

Yes, your players are your marketing agents, but they don't want to do anything that delays or inhibits their practice, so you have to fight with their desire to achieve (which, in turn, also allows them to improve the team's reputation - so it's an investment of time) versus the demands of the team through a marketable standpoint (which is difficult to translate for sponsors [please correct me here]). Big shame to have learned that as you were on FXO, because I think most managers and people learn this very simple rule quite early on when they start. Makes it brutally hard and since most teams don't sanction their players for breaking contract, all hell breaks loose and shit goes down.

Brutal that you had to do the analytics and tweeting for the players. I know some teams do that regularly, especially for their own in-house stuff and cross-marketing (LoL to SC2 to Dota 2, etc.), but usually their players are so unique that they market themselves as well through outward communication.

In any case, I hope you start enjoying eSports more.

EDIT: lol that fxo idea, jesus

I've known the difficulties of players not wanting to market themselves since before I even joined FXOpen, It was more about creating a process to work around that issue, and it was starting to work and show good results, but ultimately shot in the foot by the new direction FXOpen wanted to go

Yeah, I just watched that bit, oh man!

No matter how easy you make streaming or how much you flex the expectations, some just don't grasp the importance of exposure beyond tournament play. You literally have to educate them and even then; they just don't have the responsible head to know when to do it.

I think back in the day when I managed, players like TheOgnis and Destiny were fucking amazing. Apocalypse would also stream if asked and reminded (Attero as well and even in early 2011, some players just grasp how good it was to get your name out there more than through brackets) and then there were players who refused to stream or would do it once in a blue moon if you really pushed for it.

Even interviews, just getting answers from the players was brutal.

do you think teams should look for players who are open minded/understand marketing themselves as opposed to just raw talent alone then in order to grow and develop an esports team?

A team like EG clearly chose the snd option, deliberatly, and you can't say that they aren't successful in term of financial success. Still the best is to get players who are both able to market themselves and talented, but those are freaking rare. It looks like KeSPA teams are quite decent at creating an environment around their best players, and it's imo, the best aim. Nobody gives a fk about your b teamer anyway.
Zest fanboy.

Nice vlog, was interesting to listen to. I think more organizations need to stop having their head up their asses really =/ It's kind of terrible how many people try to come and don't know how to market, and just won't listen to advice.

GLHF being a spectator yo.

It really depends on the teams and their priorities. They look for results (big achievements) as well as their workmanship with team (usually). Depends on the situation for the teams and what they're looking to fill (in terms of roles or expectancies)

Vlog is going to be viewed by a small number of people and taken seriously by fewer but is probably one of the most important blogs about operating a team and the innergoings on that we've had the privilege of being able to hear.

Very informative, thanks for all your hard work dude. Always enjoyed your presence in Esports.
