Well guys, Here is the background. When I was very young, I got Age Of Empires II and played the living crap out of it. My Dad played games for a while, mostly games like Earthsiege 2 (a predecessor to Tribes), Starsiege (its sucessor), and SC1 ( as one of the people who plays and by the end of the match 2 hours later has 8 SCVs and 20k mins against a very easy opponent). My time was always limited to about 1 hr per day, and then eventually they decided that I shouldn't have fighting games at all. That was when I was 7. For the next 5 years I only remember 2 games, Lego Racer and Flatout 2. I played the fun out of both of those, and eventually i was granted more and more freedom, starting with SC1, then SC2, then Tribes: Ascend (an amazing game that I only quit because the only people playing were way better than me) and Gears of war.
Now, I know what you are thinking. "I see little kid stuff, and then some good stuff, and then a hardcore M-rated shooter. WTF?" Their main guidelines are no magic (read- Diablo ect.) and no killing humans (read- battlefield, COD, ect). These guidelines were often used to discount any game that they just didn't like the look of.
Well, there is a happy ending and a question. I'm turning 18 soon, and after that happens they loosen control significantly. There are still certain things that don't come in the house period, but most games are free and open. I am starting to collect a list of all the games that I would like to get and play, and I would love suggestions from TL. Here is the list so far:
Games I already have: Dota 2 Half life 1 and 2 L4D 2 SC2
Games I'm getting: Borderlands 1 and 2 Just Cause 2 Far Cry 3 All the Bioshock and Mass Effect games
I know there are others. What do you guys recommend? Only PC please, That's all I have.
As far as the casual part goes, I'm not a huge fan of super intense games. I get huge adrenaline rushes that leave me drained after boss battles and such ( The Berserker from GoW was terrifying). This removes certain games like Amnesia, other horror ( I want to leave Dead Space for a while) and games with lots of super intense boss battles.
Thanks much.

I hear metro 2033 is worth trying even though it might be a bit too much on the horror side. You should also definitely try the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, all of them are really good.

i got metro 2033 for free off steam....check it maybe it is still there? found it pretty fun, just frustrating trying to take off the breathing mask once it is cracked and blocking vision if anyone knows what i am talking about >.<*

I'd highly recommend the original Knights of the Old Republic games (depending on your stance on Star Wars and RPGs in general) and the Deus Ex games (you could skip Invisible War without missing much). Both of those series had really good stories and gameplay.... Fallout 3 and New Vegas are rather good, too

Team fortress 2 is a great easy to pick up free team based fps, on steam. Crusader kings 2 is a fun complex strategy game. Ftl is a good indie rogue like game that's cheap and very fun. Saint's row 2 and 3 are a blast.

If you think you might like stealth-action games, Assassin's Creed is a fun series, Dishonored is good, and the first few Splinter Cell games are good. Assassin's Creed/Dishonored are based mainly around hand-to-hand combat and Splinter Cell is gun-based.

Metro 2033, cheap and amazing albeit a lil short. Play it on hardest difficulty for best experience.

i would skip the games and get the fuck out of the house where one of the ground rules is no games with magic. wtf??? what other crazy non gaming rules do you have

But other than that I would recommend Dragon age:Origins and Witcher 1/2, Dishonored and Hitman blood money. Don't take to long to finish nor to short, they are all top notch game in their genre in the respective years of launch and have decent graphics while also being able to run on relatively shitty computer.

The GTA games are pretty fun for the casual gamer. Open world and all that. Pretty cheap on PC as well.
