Hey there,
this blog isn't for me personally but a friend of mine. She' currently studying to get her bachelor of science biology and applied for an year in the US at her university. She passed the tests and was accepted... so long story short. She needs to travel to Detroit from Germany and unfortunately, she cannot fly until the 9 August, since all of them are having exams.
Well August seems to be one of the most expensive month to fly into the US... and since here are a lot of people who travel a lot and have experience with flights, I might as well as here for my friend if you have any suggestions?
She can fly from 9 August until 15 August (needs to be there 19 though) and her goal is Detroit, but if there are any close airports which are cheaper in terms of traveling there, go ahead and make a suggestion !
We were already thinking about booking travel to canada and a flight to the US from there, but since I'm really unexperienced with booking travels/flights I prefer to ask here. She lives in Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf (DUS) Airport) but it should be no problem to fly from Frankfurt / Cologne or another German airport. Location in the end needs to be Detroit, but flying to a cheaper city and having an inland-flight there is no problem!
Please help us

U can look up prices for flint Bishop airport. It's about an hourand half outside of Detroit only alternative I can think of.

I've been looking up connection from Düsseldorf (DUS) to New York (JFK) for 530€ ... from New York to Detroit is ~100-150€ ... that should be cheapest I guess :x

If she's not altogether against driving, renting a subcompact or compact car and driving the distance should be quite cheap.

You need a Lotus Esprit for this particular trip

Frankfurt New York (one way) I see on Kayak for 500 euro.
I'd take that as a starting point and head over to https://flightfox.com/

Oh nooo detroit. She's probably going to hate the US after a year =[.

Detroit is 'The Wire' just in bigger scale
Sorry, can't help but still wishing u good luck for finding a cheap and comfortable way to Detroit.

You can check Flint or even Grand Rapids, but then you will have to rent a car and drive to Detroit. And I think flying into Flint would be even scarier than DTW. DTW is not in the city it's on 94 heading west so you don't have to worry about getting shot or anything.
I have found that flights from Boston to Grand Rapids can be cheaper than flights from BOS to DTW. Grand Rapids is about 3 hours from Detroit.
Try checking JetBlue they usually have cheap flights in the US. Also Delta Airlines has a hub in DTW so they are usually flying there from everywhere.

Have you tried expedia? I have found some really good deals there for years!

Is there no way for your friend to move up her exams? Flight prices are pretty cheap otherwise. Also, you can ask the university's international students office for additional help and maybe alternatives.
Renting a car isn't an option I don't think unless your friend is very comfortable driving in a foreign land.

JFK substitutable with any cheaper airport.

As people have already mentioned, Flint is an option. However, Toledo (Ohio) is actually closer to Detroit than Flint and might be another option. I'm not sure if there is a major airport in Ontario (Canada), but if there is, that would probably be worth checking into.

Toronto Pearson is in Ontario. It's Air Canada's hub and quite a busy airport overall.

If you're flying to an unknown city in another country to live there, in my opinion you should really just cut out the hassle and fly to Detroit. You might get a cheaper trip to Toledo or Flint, but it'll cause a lot of extra stress, on top of the already major stress from finding/living in a new place. You don't want to have to rent a car and drive around Detroit (learning to drive in a new country..., plus you have to be 25+ to rent) and the cab ride will be a lot more.
Where is she actually supposed to end up? There's Detroit the city and the Metro Detroit area. Detroit the city is what outsiders think of when they hear Detroit. There is some crime but the bigger problem is vacancy; it's literally at under half capacity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit
The Detroit Metro area is much larger and includes suburbs around Detroit, where people actually live. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Detroit
Is the school University of Detroit Mercy or Wayne State or something else?
EDIT: I agree, Dusseldorf or Frankfurt -> JFK and JFK -> DTW is probably best.

Don't worry Jibba, she's with 7 others from university, they got a place to stay for the year. She isn't going on their own and the studies are paid from her program. So the only concern is how to get to Detroit from Germany, cheapest way possible! Sorry for being unclear about that, but thats for the thoughts and time you put into your post!
Her university will be Michigan State University (MSU) , Detroit / Lansing is just the closest airport., She will be living in Lansing. No worries guys :D
