I'm bored, and I want a new game to play. None of my friends play league of legends, although I hear it is amazing.

However, I have heard terrible things about LoL's community. Also, I dislike the moba games that I have tried before. Nevertheless, I want to hear people's opinions on weather or not it is worth playing, so...

Is it worth learning how to play LoL?

No harm in just downloading it and trying it out, since it's free. But since you mentioned none of your friends play it... "mobas" are usually much more fun if you team up with friends, so there's that.

LoL's community might be bad, but Hon/DOTA 2/any other online multiplayer game are not much better. Personally I don't like LoL though (I prefer DOTA 2, which I barely play as well now).

It's pretty fun to play, even solo. However, it's definitely much better with friends, not only for fun, but a bit of coaching when you're just getting started helps avoid a lot of trial and error.

I had heard horrible things about the community, but once I tried the game out itself I find that the people were either balanced on either side of manner(as in for every BM there was a GM) or just chatted to communicate for the game. From what I have seen of the higher levels it may get way more BM there?

All in all, definitely give it a try. Hopefully some friends join you. If not, it's still all right.
Can it be I stayed away too long? Did you miss these rhymes while I was gone?

There is no harm in trying it. I tried it and hated it personally it's just not my cup of tea, mobas are pretty boring to me. But since i twas F2P I did try it and yeah didn't like it, you might like it though but again no reason not to try it, it is free after all

If you like dota, you can try out LoL. It is basically a more relaxed version of dota coupled with some new mechanics like invis around the bush, 2 custom spells etc.
I quite like it to be honest.

Usually there might be one BM player in each team and that's about it, just make sure you don't BM back especially if you are new to the game. try to listen to what he is saying and learn instead.

you dont have to worry about the community if you have friends to play with.

I love it to pieces. I wasted so many glorious hours happily playing.

I would never solo queue. ever. Find people you like playing with.

LoL is fun to play I enjoy it a lot, BUT, understand that if you have access to DotA it might be better to play and learn DotA since the learning curve is much higher for it in the beginning. Skill ceiling stuff aside, it might be better for you to try DotA and see if you enjoy it. That said, no harm in play LoL, its an amazing game, but takes forever to get full masteries/runes/etc.

Even though you didn't like other moba games, you might want to give LoL a chance. It's fairly newbie-friendly, and the level and champion progression gives you something to work for (at least I know some people who like that). I have a ton of friends that weren't into mobas, or even into gaming, that got hooked with LoL.

About the community, it has a wide spectre, going from nice players to trolls and BMs. It's pretty much the same as other mobas, unfortunately, so you'll have to either ignore the trolls and grow a thick skin or, even better, find some friends to play with.

The thing I hated about LoL was the amount of people playing only to troll you. If there wasn't one guy intentionally feeding there was someone screaming shit at people making your team fall apart as they argue the entire game. Then when you get to ranked you best hope you don't dip into low elo because you will be stuck with those type of people forever. Basically I would avoid unless you have friends to queue with because the community is the worst I've ever played with.

Just don't play it too seriously unless you have 4 other good people/friends playing with you. The only thing I learned from the game is that you can't carry bads. Team is only strong as the weakest link.

I've followed MOBAs for over 1.5 years and one thing I would tell a newcomer is:

NEVER take solo queue seriously. Even if your other four teammates are raging at you because you're feeding DO NOT take it/them seriously. It is not worth the time and stress. You will go down a deep, dark path if you put ANY importance, whatsoever, into your elo.

Otherwise, Have fun! - enjoy learning 100+ characters...it's quite a ride.

Play to have fun and find champs you enjoy. People have bad games/rage/afk sometimes. Watevs, it happens to everyone eventually.

Edit: To the guy below me, you can fill out 2 rune pages with T1 runes instead of Tier3. They're usually 1/10th the price or less and about 1/2 the effectiveness of T3 runes. If you're a die hard min maxer it hurts inside but really it doesn't matter that much.

I am currently trying out LOL.

If you have played dota, then there are some minor differences in certain mechanics

e.g. tower priority is always hits enemy champs attacking allied champs, hit what comes in first, ignore you if there are creeps unless you attack champ and won't switch target until unit is dead or out of tower range
No S spam last hit, you have to A move/ a click or right click the creep
CC are less imba than dota

Minus points IMO:
You have to be at least level 30 summoner or you are basically useless i.e. cannot compete in spells (need level 12) and masteries.
You don't have full pool of champs to play. I rather enjoy randoming in dota.
Overall, it's kinda pay to win despite being free to play.
Having better runes will almost always win the game (if skill are close) since tier 3 runes are freaking expensive and you have to fill 30 of them. Worse still if you want to play different roles, meaning almost impossible to fully optimise your champs without enormous time investment unless you buy RP or specialise in roles.
Seems that there are some "OP" champs that are better than others that require a lot of IP/ RP to unlock.

Anyway, it is still worth a try. At least there are champ rotation so you will get a chance to try out all champs (i think?).
Some champ mechanics seem interesting so that's worth looking to as well. Overall.. still a pretty fun game.

The community is bad in all MOBAs, but it is getting better in League of Legends due to heavy Riot involvement in incentivizing good behavior. It's definitely not the best environment, but it's no worse than XBOX Live, for example. I would recommend you trying it because, as others have mentioned, it is free so you have nothing to lose. I find it quite relaxing at times because you can really play it at any level of seriousness based on your mood that day. Sometimes you can play bot games to unwind, normal games to pubstomp, or ranked games to compete and tryhard. Other MOBAs are fun as well, but LoL is worth a try.

Try it coz it's free.

The custom game community in league is usually pretty awesome (the only custom people take seriously is ARAM and that isn't guaranteed). I know when my friends started to get bored they would just go on to the custom games list and do a 5v5 where everyone played just for super fun tiems. Also, you can get people to play football sometimes (spawn fountain is touchdown line ^_^)

I don't understand why people constantly say "x community is bad/horrible". It's the internet. People are going to be assholes regardless what game you play. And usually shit starts because you actually took the bait and respond to the troll.
Without a paddle up shit creek.

If you've disliked the MOBA games you've played before you may find you just dislike the genre... I personally don't like country music so I don't listen to it.

LoL on the other hand is a moba that is significantly easier than DotA 2 so it isn't a bad idea to get acquainted with the genre with training wheels on... DotA2 can be intimidating.
Cynicism isn't wisdom; it's a lazy way to say that you've been burned. Seems if anything you'd be less certain after everything you ever learned.
