LoL's community might be bad, but Hon/DOTA 2/any other online multiplayer game are not much better. Personally I don't like LoL though (I prefer DOTA 2, which I barely play as well now).

I had heard horrible things about the community, but once I tried the game out itself I find that the people were either balanced on either side of manner(as in for every BM there was a GM) or just chatted to communicate for the game. From what I have seen of the higher levels it may get way more BM there? All in all, definitely give it a try. Hopefully some friends join you. If not, it's still all right.

I quite like it to be honest. Usually there might be one BM player in each team and that's about it, just make sure you don't BM back especially if you are new to the game. try to listen to what he is saying and learn instead.

I love it to pieces. I wasted so many glorious hours happily playing. I would never solo queue. ever. Find people you like playing with.

About the community, it has a wide spectre, going from nice players to trolls and BMs. It's pretty much the same as other mobas, unfortunately, so you'll have to either ignore the trolls and grow a thick skin or, even better, find some friends to play with.

NEVER take solo queue seriously. Even if your other four teammates are raging at you because you're feeding DO NOT take it/them seriously. It is not worth the time and stress. You will go down a deep, dark path if you put ANY importance, whatsoever, into your elo. Otherwise, Have fun! - enjoy learning 100+ characters...it's quite a ride.

Watevs, it happens to everyone eventually. Edit: To the guy below me, you can fill out 2 rune pages with T1 runes instead of Tier3. They're usually 1/10th the price or less and about 1/2 the effectiveness of T3 runes. If you're a die hard min maxer it hurts inside but really it doesn't matter that much.

If you have played dota, then there are some minor differences in certain mechanics e.g. tower priority is always hits enemy champs attacking allied champs, hit what comes in first, ignore you if there are creeps unless you attack champ and won't switch target until unit is dead or out of tower range No S spam last hit, you have to A move/ a click or right click the creep CC are less imba than dota Minus points IMO: You have to be at least level 30 summoner or you are basically useless i.e. cannot compete in spells (need level 12) and masteries. You don't have full pool of champs to play. I rather enjoy randoming in dota. Overall, it's kinda pay to win despite being free to play. Having better runes will almost always win the game (if skill are close) since tier 3 runes are freaking expensive and you have to fill 30 of them. Worse still if you want to play different roles, meaning almost impossible to fully optimise your champs without enormous time investment unless you buy RP or specialise in roles. Seems that there are some "OP" champs that are better than others that require a lot of IP/ RP to unlock. Anyway, it is still worth a try. At least there are champ rotation so you will get a chance to try out all champs (i think?). Some champ mechanics seem interesting so that's worth looking to as well. Overall.. still a pretty fun game.

The custom game community in league is usually pretty awesome (the only custom people take seriously is ARAM and that isn't guaranteed). I know when my friends started to get bored they would just go on to the custom games list and do a 5v5 where everyone played just for super fun tiems. Also, you can get people to play football sometimes (spawn fountain is touchdown line ^_^)

LoL on the other hand is a moba that is significantly easier than DotA 2 so it isn't a bad idea to get acquainted with the genre with training wheels on... DotA2 can be intimidating.

I really haven't run into that many douches on LoL. There's a handful, but they're easily ignored and you can always report them after. LoL was my first (and only) MOBA and I'm not sure I've ever gotten specifically harassed. But then again, I hate being incompetent in team game situations and so obsessively played against comps with one character so that I could be reasonably competent in team games. And then I slowly expanded to a handful of characters. I think it's better with friends on Teamspeak or RL. Especially with a friend that is better than you and is a good teacher/advisor. It's a fun, relaxing game if I don't want the stress of iCCup. edit. The only really irritating thing when I first started was there were a bunch of people that would leave in comp-stomps (easy mode.) I really haven't run into that for awhile, but it hardly matters anymore because they're comps. You can report them too. Dunno how fast they are with dealing with that stuff though.

Sure, no harm done in trying it. And if you like it, i'd recommend trying to get into DotA2 My opinion is that DotA2 is more fun, interesting and just overall a better game, but again, that's my opinion which is obviously just how i see it and i see no harm in you trying out LoL to see what you think of it.

Some stuff to note, which has already been mentioned over and over but I'll mention it again: * None of your friends play it, this is a big problem. MOBAs are generally not all that fun to play yourself, and LOL is IMO even worse than Dota 2 in this case. Try the game out and try to get your friends into it if you like it. It's free, they have no reason not to give it a try. * MOBAs in general are pretty harsh to beginners, there's a fuckton to learn. Make sure you give the game some time, don't just play one game and ragequit. Go to lolpro or mobafire, find a guide for a champion which looks interesting, then try that character for a few games. Read up on the roles and pick one which sounds fun to you (ADC, Support, APC, Bruiser, Jungler). I wouldn't recommend jungler though, it's very hard to play an effective jungler before Summoner lvl 20. * Don't take it seriously. When you start out, you're low summoner level and will play with other people in that situation. Many of them will suck, but some of them will probably be ridiculously good, because they are smurfing on new accounts. It's not ranked, it doesn't matter, just focus on improving and learning more.

Also, if you want to improve (a fun goal) don't pay that much attention to how your teammates screwed up - it would always be possible for you to do something better, so let that be your take-away lesson (unless of course you can analyze it calmly and rationally).

I've never played it, and I'm bored watching it (but that's because I'm not emotionally invested it... I love watching games that I'm familiar with), but there's no harm in giving yourself a solid two weeks or so of trying to get into the game. If you love it, great! If you don't, you haven't really lost anything. I have a bunch of friends who play LoL. They say it's pretty easy to learn, and pretty difficult to master. That sounds good to me. And I've heard that with MOBAs, it's preferable to play with your friends or find groups online that you repeatedly team up with, because playing alone isn't as fun an experience. "What competitive game isn't multiplayer, online, and takes on some sort of battle? The first three words apply to nearly every single online game that pits players against each other (obviously). The fourth word, arena, doesn't even describe the DotA genre. Using that word implies an all-hostile area that dismisses DotA's territorial control and lane-pushing among its many facets of gameplay. Even RTSRPG or ActionRTS would be better (yet still lacking) acronyms. If anything, use DotA as a genre of its own, or use its original form, AoS (Aeon of Strife from Starcraft). Please help stop the widespread use of the vague term " Aeon of Stryfe is where the game comes from, including that in the genre name already explains more than arena does and limits the gameplay idea massively. Fortress assault further explains what the entire goal of the game is. And honestly i don't see how it can be confused with other types of games. Then we have MOBA, SC2 is a MOBA by definition and so is counter strike, and hey so is quake and so on. It's a really bad acronym honestly. I don't agree with using ASSFAG either, but it's still better than MOBA. Edit: This isn't the right thread for this discussion though.
