When GW2 was released Friday night, I had just returned home from my normal workday (9 hours of working + 3 hours of travel). I had planned on taking a nap before playing, but the servers came up 3 hours ahead of time, so I hopped right into the game.
I was keeping myself hyped up on caffeine and played late into the night. Around 3 a.m. PST, while I was in an Eternal Battleground, I noticed my heart beating very rapidly, so much that it started hurting. I stopped and rested for a bit, then began to play again. This time my heartrate shot up so much that it felt like my heart was cramping. I laid down and attempted to rest, but my heart kept ranging from beating hard and fast to barely beating at all.
As I was resting, I started noticing additional symptoms, such as loss of sensitivity to heat, loss of blood to my extremities (my fingers and hands were turning purple), my vision dimming and numbness. After realizing my heart wasn't going to calm down, I called 911.
I was greeted first by the firemen. In fact, I was greeted with "Where are your parents," by a stern looking older man. I was so startled, I answered truthfully, "They are in Washington." To which he replied, "I need to see your ID, you don't look 18." Despite the fact my heart seemed intent on ripping itself out of my check, I couldn't help but laugh as I replied, "I'm 22, but thank you."
They hooked me up to their heartrate monitor and all gave extremely stern/worried faces at me until the ambulance arrived and carried me off.
At the hospital, they noted my heartrate was extremely fast and irregular, so I was given a sedative and laid there unsure what the hell was happening to me for a few hours. Finally, my heart decided to behave. Once my heartrate dropped back to below 100 bmp (my resting is 62 bmp), they finished up my paperwork and released me.
:D
And that was my experience with the GW2 release.

How high did the rate get? I have a really fucked up heart and its rate is absolutely insane (twice that of a normal person's resting heartrate a lot of the times). Was sent to emerg from school once because it was at 165bpm (60-100 is within normal range, though anything close to 100 is concerning)

Someone call Fox/CNN. We got another case of video game addiction almost taking a life

That's what I was thinking when I was reading this.
If Riku had died that's exactly what would have happened. We'd be hearing it all over the news. Good thing it didn't come to that.

I had something similiar, although that was from combining having just bought M&B:Warband and having the winter finals coming up at the end of the week. Over the seven days, I got something like 5 hours sleep total (but racked up 100 played hours in addition to reading!), something my heart didn't take kindly to.
Couple of nights of 16 hours sleep fixed it right up, but I've been pretty careful with ditching sleep since. You don't wanna piss your heart off too much.

dude why dont you just stop playing when you notice that?

some things are just too good
being american and going to the hospital wouldn't that have cost a shit ton of money?

Is it a one-time thing or an underlying heart condition? Any word on this?
Hope it's not the latter.....

Haha, I had really only been playing for 6 hours and I have often stayed up that late. I'm a night-owl, work just forces me to be up early.

Perhaps. I used to get very minor tachycardias from drinking too much soda when I was younger. Admittedly, I thought it was just one of those the first time (they were never serious and so rare I wasn't even diagnosed with an issue).

Perhaps. I do have health insurance, though. They wouldn't give me my bill when I was leaving, said it was "taken care of" for now. I assume I'll be getting it in the mail. My father said he wants to cover it, though. I graduated recently, so most of my income is going to student loans.

As mentioned above, I believe it is an underlying heart condition, as I have had minor tachycardias in the past. We shall see.

Maybe stop eating so many burgers and eat healthy, next time drink water instead of caffeine.

"I was riku's neighbor for 11 years. She never seemed like the kind of recluse who would spend too much time on those satanic video games. Always such a bright person with so much to offer the world."

There are two things that will make your heart race - caffeine and love. If you try to play GW2 while on caffeine, you are going to have a very bad time.

dont blame gw2 for your obvious health concerns.
perrrhaapppps gw2 is attempting to save you by saying, hey, you're too fat, you can't even play video games anymore.
just sayin'.

I eat extremely well. I was drinking caffeine to stay awake, I normally just drink water or milk.

The title was for hype, I'm well aware that it was my own poor choices that caused my issues, not a video game. Don't get all grouchy.
Also... lol, fat.

Damn, the amount of douche responses in this thread is totally Next Level.
Glad you're okay, I have had heart problems in the past so I'm always extremely paranoid about that sorta stuff though ;x

Exactly how many hours did you play for dolly?
Did you eat properly the entire time? You say you did, but too much caffeine can be very bad for you. That's why I don't even go near the stuff. Usually I have no problem when it comes to doing 32+ hours of a gaming marathon but I do stay refreshed.
The last one I did was the Tinker Race to 40 on the NA servers for DN.
That was good fun.

Exactly what I was thinking. Like I said, I never ever go near the stuff anymore. I will have tea sometimes, but usually I stick to lots and lots of water. Which she said she did too, but too much caffeine and you could put yourself at risk.

just sayin'. The title was for hype, I'm well aware that it was my own poor choices that caused my issues, not a video game. Don't get all grouchy. Also... lol, fat. not grouchy... im actually quite upset at how society treats obese people. it's almost like they cater too them instead of fixing them.
for example: you can call out smokers on smoking. its accepted. you call someone fat in a polite way, it's STILL bad. wtf is that. it's not like it's rude, it's an attempt to stop the smoker same as an attempt to stop you from killing yourself. aren't the risks of eating bad just as horrible for you as smoking?
i mean fuck me, we aren't even suppose to have sugar, it affects our brains like a joint or cocaine. wtf is that? and we have XXL cokes and 2L slushies and shit like that? are you serious?
i have to pay so much in taxes in healthcare because of fatties. people call an ambulance because their fat heart can't take it anymore. how pathetic is that?! honestly man, not a rude question, or hostile. its just, there should be attention to this issue, as it's ever growing in our world. and people just seem to keep stuffing their fat faces. whats even worse now, is that kids see it, and it's ok.
it's accepted to eat fast food more than once a week or drink pop everyday. dont even get me started on energy drinks, that's just even worse.
even tho im not vain, fatties are gross, like wtf? and im not talking about fat ass genetics. im talking about seeing a fatty order a big mac meal with a diet coke. jesus fuck.
anyway /rant off. im not cranky, im just really concerned. it's almost like, fat = it is what it is. wtf is that? its like pollution, it is what it is. or like the growing gap between rich and poor, it is what it is. sad world we are entering. and unfortunately, your example is a typical case. makes me angry to see my own kind do this to themselves.
have a good one man. i hope you change your lifestyle, it feels really good to be able to want to take the stairs, instead of having to. :\
