Dat coconut sponge cake...
As for cakes to make, carrot cakes are surprisingly good, but I have always been predisposed to the more hearthy cakes.

It tasted pretty good straight off of the cooling rack :D I'd love to make carrot cake. I used to dislike it, but the taste has really grown on me after sampling some local ones.

I didn't add enough flour to that one (It's only for 3 people so it should be enough), but I think the quantities for the coconut sponge were just right for my size of baking tin :D I've just been doing the measurements by eyeballing it (we don't seem to have any scales at the moment.) I'll probably start following proper recipes if I cook anything more complicated than a sponge though :D I'll definitely add comments about the taste/texture etc.
|
I came into this thread thinking of "baking" otherwise...
The sponge cake looks sooo good, imo because of the beautiful crust you got going on there. I love sponge cakes for their crusts, more than the "interior" part, because the crust is always a zone of concentrated sweet goodness. And yours looks to die for.
|
Looks delicous. :D I wish I could bake.
|
Damn, that coconut sponge cake makes me drool. I'm a sucker for baked goods.
|
Mhmmmmmm that sponge cake..... Makes me hungry for some sweets.
5/5, both cakes look really delicious!
|
I actually read Baking as the name of a town. So I thought this was an epic blog about adventures in foreign countries. Instead it's a blog about nice cake. It's ok. :D
|
If you could name those cakes after progamers, who would they be and why?
I'm rather bored so I'm thinking up random questions that might result in something entertaining.

My god that peanut butter icing looks amazing
|
do we rate blog based on if we like the food? i hate peanut butter so maybe i only give 4/5

They look so good, since you're on a diet and I'm such a selfless person I guess I could help shoulder some of the burden if you mail them to me.
And for suggestions, well carrot cake is the shit and lemon cheesecake is pretty good too.
edit: Who needs an oven in Korea really? You can get all your quality traditional french style baked goods, like sweet potato garlic bread, from Paris Baguette lol.

It's not going to be just peanut butter. So I guess it's a rating for the concept, the photos, and whatever cakes you do fancy once I add more in the future. Someone rated it 1, so I guess they hate cake lol.

Not sure about the cakes, photos are great though, and I heard taking good pictures of food is pretty hard. 5/5 =)

Well they are pretty much my first experiments, so hopefully they'll improve in terms of taste, variety and looks. I'm just learning how to bake again now after five years >.>

Oh my god, chocolate cake with peanut butter topping *drool*
These are some amazingly good food photos. I wish I had that.

Try doing a cake soak, or tres leche (I think that's how you write it T_T). You make the cake, and then soak it in milk. Best thing I have ever eaten, and really easy to make. Good luck <3

I read the title as "Adventures in Banking"
Needless to say I was a little confused by the content, although not at all disappointed.

Mmmhhh... that sponge cake looks fucking delicious. But I know how you feel about cake and being on a diet

I read the title as "Adventures in Banking" and I read the entire thing waiting to see how it would all relate to banking..
Nice cakes though
|
One thing I've baked recently(Yesterday) is soft gingerbread. Essentially it's a sponge cake with ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and bicarbonate with sour milk instead of regular milk and brown sugar instead of regular sugar. It stays good for a couple of days (But everyone will probably eat it right away)
|
Very nice presentation for both cakes! I just ate, but now I find myself wanting dessert. I really love coconut, so that sponge cake looks great. I want to know how you made the topping for the chocolate cake, it looks so pretty.
|
Oh it looks so good! ~ My dad is a huge fan of peanuts and I love coconut so please share your recipe ^^
|
Mad props to you man! I love to cook, but cooking is much more "feel" whereas I find baking to be much more of an exact science. Never been great with baking
Everything looks delicious!!!
|
I read "banking". Oh god, baking is so much better than banking!

spongecake looks amazing wish i could have some

Why limit yourself to cakes? I personally like a good banana bread. Other breads I also find desirable include zuccini bread, pumpkin bread, and other similar varieties of bread. I also like it when nuts and or chocolate chips are included in said breads. Also, more normal breads, including honey-wheat, pumpernickel, rye and sourdough are also fantastic when homemade.

I can vouch for this, banana bread at least is AMAZING, when well made its one of the nicest things ever, and I've heard good things about zuccini bread as well.
Also good to see that I wasn't the only one to read banking ! baking>banking

Bread is kind of someone else's domain in our house, but once I've got a loaf tin then I'll definitely have a crack at it. I did make banana bread in the past, and I remember it being really good. I never quite branched out beyond that though ^_^;

Are you going to be taking pictures throughout the process or just the final product?

I suppose I could do some step by step stuff too, but at the moment the processes are really simple (Throw stuff into bowl, mix, put in cake tin, bake.) so I didn't think it'd be too interesting (hence the lack of recipes.)

Back at my old job, I think the consensus was that baking skills was at least a 1 point bonus on the hotness scale. After seeing these pictures, I definitely agree.

Do you happen to have a recipe? They sound intriguing.

After seeing the blog is from you my first thought was "the aperture seems to be too high", then I noticed this is about food in the first place. =P
That chocolate/peanut butter thing looks like a total killer in all kinds of ways tho. <33
|
If I were back in the UK and into baking / cakes, I would get myself to the Hummingbird bakery and get one of their red velvet cupcakes, my god they are so good. The recipe can be found too.
Other than than, lemon or lime drizzle type cakes are amazing. Looking forward to updates!

i like the design on your "tablecloth". carrot cakes i like with nuts. tbh, i think my all time fav is lemon pie.
|
Make a cherpumple! It requires a lot of time and love to make though

Caramel pineapple cake is beast mode, you should try it out

Very hungry now, should not have clicked on this link. Those cakes do look lovely though, will we be seeing any step-by-step blogs in the future? Great photos.

+ Show Spoiler + Potato Chip Cookies adapted from Taste of Home “Best Summer Desserts”
1 cup butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups crushed potato chips 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs. Combine the flour and baking soda and slowly add to the creamed sugars. Mix well. Stir in the potato chips and chocolate chips.
Drop by small spoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 1 minute before removing to a wire rack.
I try to use plain (salt) thick cut crinkle cut. As I find these give the best texture at the end. Usually its the cheapest pack on the shelf at Aldi. I also use White Choc Chips now. As i like the flavour more.
The problem I have the most is getting the mixture right to not make them go all flat and smooshy and to retain there shape as cookies. But I think thats just my inexperience and probably my ovens too hot.

I used to think this until I saw all the work that went into creating photoworthy food for magazines and the like. I believe people who do most of that are called food styalists and near 90% of what they make is inedible!
On topic. Cakes look delicious and as someone who loathes baking beyond all belief I would actually be interested in aquiring that coconut sponge cake recipe if you will let me have it. It looks delicious and I love almost universally all things coconut.
