Dungeons of Dredmor and Why You Should Play It

Dungeons of Dredmor is one of the best games I have ever played. I have spent at least 300 hours playing it, if Steam is to be believed. I don't regret it at all. It's a rogue-like, which means, if you happen to be unfamiliar or illiterate, basically a turn-based action-oriented role-playing door-smashing sort of thing. Essentially, you walk around a dungeon and beat mutant ducks to death with a club.

entirety of game summed up in one picture

What makes it different from other rogue-likes? IT HAS MOVING PICTURES. Also, it has a humorous fantasy theme and engaging gameplay. Every item, skill, and monster has some sort of silly description, so as you progress in the game, you get to see new jokes as well new areas and improve your character like in a typical game.

challenge accepted

Also it's $4.99 on Steam. The expansion pack is $0.99 and you should also get it because it has more areas and items and monsters and stuff.

You didn't mention how absurdly difficult this game is.

If you're a giant pussy, you probably won't enjoy this game. You are going to die. Probably in the first room, if its your first time playing. This is part of the fun. I recommend playing on Going Rogue difficulty with Permadeath enabled for the full experience. You will improve as you continue to play and learn what items do and various strategies.

Holy crap this game is hard. How do survive the first room?

I would recommend you try playing a Warrior type of character on your first few tries. The magic-type characters are much easier to die with on Floor 1. Take Maces, Master of Arms(very important) and Shield Bearer. Try to fight one monster at a time and not to walk over traps. Stay far away from Gargoyle Acid traps. A point or two in Burglary is very helpful and improves quality of life. Don't be afraid to use your consumable items. Well, be somewhat afraid.

I can't get out of the first floor.

Have you tried the stairs? Smithing is a great skill for the early levels because it lets you turn junk into gear, giving you a much better chance of wearing the right equipment. Level it up as quickly as possible to make powerful items early. Make a pair of Copper Boots and a Steel Cuirass as soon as you can. Steel is hard to find and best spent making the pieces to a Full Plate Mail. Alchemy is useful for making potions and gives helpful passive resistances for some annoying damage sources. Explore everywhere to get levels and more items.

This is why Smithing is good

I can't get past the second floor.
The knockback/stun skills in Maces/Shield/Psionics are absurdly useful. While a monster is knocked back/stunned, you can use a turn to eat or drink without taking damage. You'll want a skill tree with a heal, I recommend Psionics. Watch out for the Monster Zoo. Tentacle Wand or some other aoe item can deal with a Monster Zoo rather quickly. The Copper Ring is great to wear up until you're done with Floor 3.

I can't get past the third floor.

Basically there are three types of things that will murder you: melee attacks, magic attacks, and traps. It's simple to explain how to avoid or mitigate melee attacks but much harder to actually do. You want to wear big enough armor to absorb the damage or a method of not getting hit. For magic attacks, its helpful to know the terrain and type of damage. You'll want a Ring of Ash or two on you for the remainder of the game. The magic missile spell is Aethereal and Blasting damage, so your armor will resist part of it. For traps, level 10 Trap Affinity lets you disarm every trap in the game. You can get this by simply taking Tinkering. I usually end up taking Burglary and Archaeology instead. A point or two of Acid Resistance goes a long way when dealing with Acid traps.

My personal favorite tree.

Seriously? You beat this game on Going Rogue?

Several times. A successful build I would recommend: Maces, Master of Arms, Shield Bearer, Archaeology, Burglary, Assassination, Psionics.

I haven't gotten past Floor 10 since Realm of the Diggle Gods though haha. Haven't really been playing all that much since then.

Try the game out! Share your epic Dredmor stories!

DoD is an awesome game. I think the furthest I've gotten to date is level 5, maybe level 6. What I love about the game is the every time you die you try to fine tune your build, dropping a skill you found useless the previous time while taking something new.

The only story I have is about my first semi-successful run. I went for a blood mage with the fire spells and was kicking ass with the fire trap. What I didn't realise, however, was that you could place multiple traps on the same spot, so after clearing out a big monster room on level 4 I walked over one of my own traps (which usually don't do too much damage) and died instantly

Currently my favourite indie game that is kind of like this is Binding of Isaac. I've probably spent around 100 hours playing it, and I still need to do some things.

Not my favorite roguelike but very good nonetheless. Obviously the fact that it has graphics and -gasp- animation is a neat feature.

Realm of the Diggle Gods doesn't add much. I didn't feel an augmented difficulty in the last five floor.

I've put in it 80 hours and I feel it has nothing to offer me anymore. But 80 for that price is a no brainer.
Keep it basique.

I love the fire spells. Can't recall how many times I've gotten blinded and walked over a spell mine or just accidentally shot myself with a fireball. The last spell in the fire tree is basically a way to commit fiery suicide lol. The wand mastery tree or whatever it's called is pretty epic as well.

Great blog! I bought this game when it was on sale but have had difficulty getting into it. I just can't seem to play longer than 10mins. Maybe now I'll give it another try.

It's a great game, good example of the rogue-like genre, although simplified if you can believe it! Check out Nethack if you get a chance, it's terminal-based but one of the best games I've ever played.

I actually got this with one of the Humble Indy Bundles and then stopped playing it immediately when I realized it was just a roguelike with a 3d overlay. I honestly prefer the ASCII graphics of Nethack and [Z]Angband, which I've put hundreds of hours into and also have never beat.

I have been playing the binding of Isaac lately, very good. Perhaps not as hardcore. Not turn based. Have been enjoying that tons lately. Very dark game though. perhaps I should give this a try as well.

My memory of this game, I died on level 9 when walking up from level 10. I was surrounded by enemies so couldn't walk back down again (there was a bugged enemy on the stairs); and the only reason I walked up anyway is because I got in a rhythm of going up and down every staircase to mitigate the time lost playing from game crashes (it triggers an autosave). And the only reason I didn't clear that room originally was because every time I entered it the game crashed! Needless to say I uninstalled it right afterwards.

So I guess my question is, is the game still a buggy mess, or not?

I liked this game but the interface was pretty clunky for me and frankly clearing the first few levels gets pretty boring after a while. I just play spelunky now.

On my longest run to floor 13, the game crashed only once. So yes, much less buggy.

Fun game. Like most other rogue-like games I tend to get bored once I beat it, but looking at steam that was still good for 23 hours. Not bad for the price, especially if you like that type of game. And with the steam workshop up for the game now, modding may or may not become a good source of content.

Other people been mentioning the binding of isaac. I feel like Isaac has more longevity, and is more entertaining to play and to replay. Only game I've played more than it is Skyrim lol, which says a little something about it.

Hehe we have completely different builds Ghin. I would recommend: Staves, Dual Wield, Golemancy, Magic Training, Blood Mage, Perception and Burglary.

I found Blood Mage's potion creating skill to be quite broken and the tank you can create with golemancy make surviving a lot easier.

I think I enjoy Dredmor more than nethack, stonesoup, angband, etc, simply because I can't stand their graphics and I like how easy/simple Dredmor is. Those games have a more epic scale than Dredmor. And yes, much less clunky/buggy now.

As someone who has played other roguelikes alot I've found this game rather boring. The main reason was enemies, you keep seeing same guys all the time, except in different color and damage types.

Fun game, bought it a few weeks ago on sale, but haven't played much because I got distracted by other games/studying. It certainly is a good game with a lot of humour in it, if that's your cup of tea. Also I don't think it is that hard, I played with permadeath only and my 3th character is at the 5th floor I think without any big problems on the way. The build I like to use is centred around raw power, not sure if that is useful for the later floors. I'll definitely continue and finish it some day :p.

It's an easy game to get in to as it has pretty art and a simple ui. I view it as you're paying for increased production values, stuff like sprites, sound effects, fun item descriptions. The actual gameplay has some depth which is nice, though most of the new skills you get through mods are entirely broken. Veganism is a strong addition to the game but makes actual gameplay much more boring though :/

It's also more arcade-y than traditional roguelikes and you can move through stuff quicker.

My only problem with the game is how random the melee combat can be and how it compares to your life total (especially if you aren't wearing really heavy armor). My best character died by taking 400% monster damage in a single round of combat plus missing out on a large amount of life leech to regain hp. I attacked, was counter-attacked for a critical hit then attacked for a critical hit.

Dredmor has a lot of design issues, but it's still tons of fun. I sort of oscillate between Dredmor, Stone Soup, and Dwarf Fortress (not a roguelike I know I know). And how can you not play a game with a Horadric Lutefisk Cube?
My favorite build, not out of synergy but out of love, is Viking Magic, Mathemagic, and Smithing.

And the game is still quite buggy, yes. It's much improved, but for instance, sometimes the exits to the Mysterious Portal worlds never spawn, you can push items out of shops, you can push grates over all the stairs on a level, you can shove quest monsters into walls and never see them again, and so on.

because its only like $5 before steam sales and it's a very good introductory roguelike. Not only does it have nice visuals, but the lighthearted humor makes it more fun to learn than a cold srs bzns game.

I cant thank you enough for recommending this, was hard to get into at 1st, but man, played for 5 hrs straight just now, died a bunch, obviously, but right now running my lvl 6 character on the 2nd floor, about to hit up the 3rd floor, stupid amount of depth to this game, considering how big it is, and how simpled it seemed at 1st glance. I tried this game again, purely due to the recommendation by this blog. The first time I played it I was put off by something, I couldn't remember what, until I played the game again. There is a weird lag when attacking. Something is not right with the logic there. Sometimes enemies get attacks off on me when they shouldn't. And sometimes I attack and no attack triggers until I attack again. Sometimes between attacks enemies get multiple attacks when it feels like they shouldn't.

Now, don;t get me wrong, there may be some "Agility"-like stat which determines how fast enemies can attack, or if they get multiple attacks per turn or something, which I simply haven't discovered yet. Oh, and speaking of which, the tutorial sucks, or at least it doesn't explain some crucial aspects of the game, such as crafting. I understand that in roguelikes discovery is part of the game itself, but the UI definitely doesn't encourage "playing" it seems like you need to know how to use it to make it work.

All that being said, I've definitely taken a second look at the game, and I've had a lot more enjoyment out of it thanks to this blog. Actually, I might head off to play it right now, thanks again! <3 TL

Well, after reading this blog and since it was on sale for a mere $2.99 on Steam Summer Sales, I proceeded to get the game. I've played a couple of rogue-like RPGs before, never got too much into them though, but the game looked promising.
I've only played an hour or two into it, but I'm absolutely loving it! The game system looks great! I actually thought being it turn-based, it would move along a lot more slowly (not that it's necessarily bad). It also seems there's a nice variety of items to find.

I decided to go for a warrior-esque build: Swords, Master of Arms (might or might not have been influenced by the OP ), Perception, Smiting, Assassination, Crossbow. I totally forgot about tinkering, not too bad since I still found reagents, but the inventory was a mess of items. I actually passed through the first floor pretty easily. Start of the second floor looked promising too...till I found a monster zoo? Well...a room full of different monsters...not nice devs. Tried to run back to the stairs, but they surrounded me, haha. Went through 5 or 6 monsters, popped an invis pots but then I got surrounded again in a corridor...cuz *!$% u, that's why. And yeah, went down fighting.

I can definitely see myself sinking some hours into this <3

Oh, right, that's why I stopped playing. At the time there was a guaranteed monster zoo on every floor but the first. I imagine that didn't stay in the game, don't actually know though. Really made it a drag.

soooo satisfying.

Yeah, didn't think about the invis pot till it was too late. Actually the whole monster zoo thing came down on me a bit slowly. First I had this huge "wtf" moment, followed by a hearthly chuckle and then loud screams while I tried to came out of it alive. Next time, I'll know what to expect at least, ha!

I've only made it to like floor 8 so far but there has been a monster zoo every floor but first. I actually am glad when I find them because it is free xp. I throw my AoEs in and retreat back a little to place where I can't get surrounded or at most two things can attack me. Saving potions, bombs and other stuff helps a lot. Even if you don't have powerful AoE's, retreating back so you don't get surrounded and just killing them one by one is simple and easy (though slow).

Gave this a try today when my internet was down. Pretty fun, although it feels clunky and lacking compared to DCSS. Maybe I just need to take more time to understand all the stats/skills/controls. Can you pickup/manage items via the keyboard and is there a way to attack diagonally?

Dedicated mage builds are pretty damn strong if you're trying to beat the game on DLC. You just have to make it to like lvl 4, then try not to nuke yourself (my build usually involves necro / fire / blood magic)
I liked Dota before it was Mainstream.

So it just got fixed in the recent patch, but Mage's Mana Maille could be stacked. I wish I had saved a screenshot of my level 6 character taking on Dredmor...
