How to go from low/mid masters to high masters/gm?

Not quite sure how to do this. My builds are pretty standard, and I do alright on the ladder but I can never seem to get past the rank 25 area. I always go on huge streaks, both winning and losing. I play quite a bit, but I don't seem to be getting any better. It just seems like I'm treading water, if that makes sense. I've been around this rank for 3 seasons now, I'm not quite sure how all these high masters players actually got there.

Think of ways to improve and play a LOT more. (with improvement in mind) Perhaps pick a strategy based on expanding early and trying to defend allins (and hence econ advantage to late game) but harass nonstop.

Or you can start cheesing and playing with some real build orders.

When you get that high, scouting really matters. Id say up to low masters, you get a lot of people who will just do a build regardless of what they scout or when they scout something. i would work on scouting and letting it guide your play.

less allining, more scouting / reactive macro play IMO

I get to a certain point in masters (generally against top 8 players) where all ins just stop working. you have to really be tricky / metagame to make an all in work (which is why most all ins in GSL incorporate some metagame etc). ie you can't just straight up 8 gate a good zerg and except him not to have roaches in time, or void ray all in a terran and expect him not to scout your lack of nexus + your extra gas and make turrets in time etc.

for me, I can't stand PvP. macro games are incredibly boring and annoying.thus as my mmr goes up, i lose a lot of PvPs compared to my PvT/PvZ where I play straight up macro because I try to all in, and it just doesn't work against good players =/

Mechanics, decision making and scouting. Also it depends how much you play, if you are only playing a few games a day it's hard to improve that way and get to that level.

But huge differences are those 3 (multi tasking to). If you tend to forget to macro or something when pressure is being put on, that is something that needs to be fixed, if when you are fighting you always forget to macro up until the battles almost over, that's a huge one. Just lots of tiny things that need to be fixed to go from that mid master to high.
When I think of something else, something will go here

I almost always do a 1 rax expo variant but I lose often to opponents cheesing me.

then you're doing something wrong because if you scout it's hard to lose to cheese with 1rax cc. what kind of allins are you losing to?

you should also use sc2gears and have a look at how many games you're actually losing to cheese... i feel like i've lost a ton to stupid protoss shit recently but when i actually looked at my winrate i was like +6 in my last 15 tvps. it can be pretty misleading because you just remember the really frustrating losses and don't remember the wins.

Well this was a helpful post wasn't it.

I think that others have mentioned that scouting is really important and I can't echo that enough. At the highest level of non-professional/semi-professional play which you've nearly breached getting constant information is really important. Moreover constantly readjusting to it is very important as well.

I know you've said your builds are standard but perhaps you should generate some more generic openings (as in as mentioned some extremely early expansions) that allow you to play more reactively. I.e. for a long while i was able to get away with early heavy tank production and extra orbitals because the metagame was all infestor ling, but now people throw in muta builds like was the metagame months before and I would like you have go on huge win/loss streaks depending on these shifts.

Your all in's (or whatever people like to call it these days) probably arn't refined enough or you lack the control/mechanics to execute them well enough if you cant get to GM with them

Practising 1/2 base builds forces you to work with what you got and what you're restricted to and makes you a really strong player for anything past that

I am a high masters terran on EU (ranked 1 in my division currently) I am not sure how I got here. Maybe it is the 7 hours a day I used to play warcraft, maybe it is my hatred for zerg and toss players. But it's a fact I am here, with 3 masters accounts, with 9 terrans in total in my division, with a burning dislike against zerg and tosses and with the conviction I am better than all of them and all of them, if they played terran, would be at most diamond.

So, be cocky, play a lot.

Blade nailed it. This is the Holy Trinity of good play.

Mentality is a huge thing, too. Don't expect to be good; you have to know that you're subpar and every aspect of your play needs work. Goals high, expectations low.

If it helps at all... everyone else is getting better along with you so keeping rank does mean you're improving... you're just not improving particularly quickly.

My "advice"? Second guess yourself in replays more. Learn to all in better, Axslav said he got to GM players fast on one of his other accounts by 7 gating in PvZ and PvT every game. (I'm guessing he just did whatever in PvP)
A time to live.

I think when you are at that level, and you have your build orders nailed down, and timings etc that it comes down to things like decision making in the game which can seperate a really good player from one just above average. This is something that cannot be memorized but instead needs to come from a vast amount of game experience.

Real talk: ignore everybody else in this thread and simply play 5 more games a day than you did before. No replay viewing, no focusing on different areas of your game, just play 5 more games a day. If you really want to supercharge your improvement, play 10 more games a day.
