Hey guys earlier today I was able to head over to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C to see a rather unique exhibit that premiered this weekend, The Art of Video Games.
When I heard about this earlier in the week I thought, an exhibit in a Smithsonian museum all about video games wutttt?? must check this out opening weekend! It turned out to be quite interesting. I also met Billy Mitchell who is an interesting person. (anyone who has seen the King of Kong movie knows who this is, Donkey Kong legend/world record dude) He was there to do some interviews and make an appearance.
The actual exhibit was pretty awesome, there's an area where people can actually play some games too (super mario, pac man, myst, flower, and something else) there's a whole area that basically lets you travel through the different era's of gaming history over the past 30-40 years. Including all kinds of oldschool gaming consoles and videos/explanation of games and the impact they had on the industry. Lots of interesting little facts and stuff about games I was unaware of. Starcraft was also included in the exhibit as one of the most influential games in the windows 95 era. The video they have on Starcraft is awesome, footage from original starcraft terran mission three (survive for 30 minutes) with commentary about how Starcraft mimics real world struggles of dealing with fractured governments and genocide.
Never thought I'd see the day I'd walk into an Art Museum to watch Starcraft...
anyway not much more to say other than anyone in the D.C area should definitely go check this out! It'll be in D.C through September and then will tour the US.

fractured governments and genocide?
Oh yeah...Starcraft 1's plot was pretty decent.

that is awesome. Unfortunately I still see Billy Mitchell as a bad guy due to that movie xD was pretty unreal but loved it.

Hmm i wonder if this is really a comprehensive understanding of video games, on the other hand this is sick :D mad ups to the smithsonian.

Nice pics. And as a bit of an unrelated topic...holy sh#! a Sega Saturn! Been ages since I saw one! (since I lost mine while moving to a new house, to be accurate)

There's an article about this on BBC news website was well. Sounds pretty cool, but I find like it just barely touches the surface of this subject. Today's video game art is such a huge topic on its own and has taken such huge leaps and developed so much in the last few years. Still cool.
I 'd like to see them do a modern video game art exhibit, that would be very very cool.

they did have a fair amount of modern stuff as well, there was stuff on mass effect among other things. I didn't see it all though. and nothing on esports obviously lol this is purely about the technology and evolution of the design and history of games.
