HELLO TEAMLIQUID!

I recently picked up the game Altitude (alt: ISL referral link) again and, upon rediscovering how great of a game it is I also found out how I don't have any friends to play with. *utter dismay* So therefore this blog since there are a great many reasons as to why to pick up this game!

Funtimes!

Altitude seems to be literally designed around fun. I'd compare the looks of the game to that of Worms, with cartoony airplanes shooting cartoony shit at eachother. I'm well aware that the SC community likes to torture itself by picking up a game for which you have to have actual knowledge like Build Orders and What Do These Units Even Do? but none of that is needed for Altitude. The controls are pretty much limited to 1 button for firing gun a, 1 button for firing gun b and 1 button for dropping the bomb. The goal of the game? You control a small fighterplane, pick up a bomb, fly it to enemy territory dodging flak all the while and you dump the bomb on top of the enemy's base. It has an entry level comparable to that of Pong. On top of that, the Free Demo now has all 5 planes available so even downloading the demo you'll get a very good sense of the full game.

Alti appeals to the SC crowd

The seeming easiness of the game doesn't take away from its tactical depth though. It's a teamgame that allows you and your fellow fliers to work together in strategic ways. The gravity mechanics and the variety in maps make sure every game is different and based on your playstyle and the big array of weapons to choose from you can really shape every game you play. Like mentioned above there are 5 different types of plane you can fly, and, like the different races in StarCraft, every plane has its upsides and downsides. Not only are these planes really well balanced among one another, they can also complement one another when you're putting together a team. The game was developed by old school BroodWar players and it shows.

Support the SC scene

TeamLiquid and Altitude share a history. Two of the major Altitude clans have their roots in the TL user base and back in 2009 there even was a TL Altitude League!. Since then, the game has sponsored both a TL Invitational and a TL Open on Teamliquid. Since then, they've sponsored more Starcraft events in the Altitude NationWars and they are the sponsor behind the currently ongoing Altitude ISL. These guys have continued to support the Starcraft scene and the least we can do is try out their game to show our appreciation.

Be cool like me :D

I recently picked this game up again after I noticed them coming out and throwing some money at my beloved Broodwar. I play often enough, usually at evening times (Europe) and it just feels great to get back to this again. There's literally about 4 or 5 gvideoames I actually play, and I'm proud Alti is one of them. Downside is, I need some people to hang out with. There's still a TLnet Altitude channel on Quakenet (#TL.altitude) that I frequent but it's become rather empty. If you do decide to give this game a try feel free to add me and we'll play some games: 7fdd8066-bfb8-4417-8dec-7860abd9042f

That's it from me, going back to playing now. Hope to see some of you around ^^

So I just downloaded this game, been having fun so far.

Is there any reason to spend the 10$ for the full game? Can you unlock everything from just playing?

I believe the current model of the demo is that you can reach level 60, which unlocks all of the perks within the game, but you can't actually use all the perks unless you buy the game.

As a demo, you can still play all five of the planes, but you can only use one of three red perks (weapon loadouts) per plane, and you can only use rubber hull or heavy armour for your green perk, and turbocharger (and maybe ultracapacitor?) for your blue perk.

You can actually be competitive with three of the planes as a demo player, but you miss out on some of the more fun weapon choices.

edit- I would highly recommend buying the game. I'd say it's worth it since I've sunk 923 hours into playing it.

Cool thanks, I may end up purchasing the game but I think I'll fool around with the demo a little more first.

10$ is totally worth it. I've put about 250 hours in since beta.

I usually play in Official #1 TBD or The Hideout. But yeah, there's so much football going on >_> If this thread is a bit of a success I'm gonna try and get tec to put the teamliquid server back up

No one has ever told me that they didn't enjoy/continue playing the game after trying it. I love the people who made the game happen, and the game itself. With that said, $10 for endless entertainment of ease is a small price to pay when compared to other lesser luxuries we enjoy every day.
SC is like sex. You should play often, but never too hard. And you should only try hard when it matters.

Unfortunately for me all the servers that have decent ping are empty. The only servers with action are always those with 300+ ping zzz. Would love to play it more though. If anyone wants to add me its fractalsonfire.

Is that serial number something you get when you buy it?

Hmmm, should this go to the Sports & Games section? =P

Anyhow, I had to insta-close after following the link because I'm still at work. Hopefully I'll remember to check it out when I go through the "subscribed threads" list later at home~

Most of the veteran/skilled players spend their time on the (fan-run) Ladder servers or (fan-run) Proleague servers. These servers all have passwords to prevent hapless noobs from accidentally stumbling into them. The passwords are publicly available along with the rules for these private servers on the Altitude forums (http://altitudegame.com/forums/index.php) but be warned: if you try to play ladder as a newbie, you will lose a lot and people on your teams will bitch you out for costing them ladder points. I'd suggest waiting until you're at least close to level 60 before you start playing ladder. The ladder page is available here: http://www.altitudeladder.com/

For public servers, I recommend the Official #1-4 servers. Those will usually fill up if you get a few people to start them out.

Lag/ping is a bit of an issue since the relatively small player base makes it hard to get full servers for each region. Everyone complains about lag every now and then, but we all just deal with it. Ping from NA to EU is about 100-150 and doesn't affect gameplay much. From NA to SEA is more like 250-300 and is definitely noticeable (sometimes frustrating when you die to a shot that you dodged on your screen) Anything over 300 ping just makes the game silly.

So what's the best way to get better? Is there a particular plane you'd recommend practicing with first? Are there planes that are considered OP or UP os is it totally a style thing? I see a lot of Mirandas is that pretty much the best plane?

In a public server, a good player can dominate with any plane (I just got seriously accused of hacking by some guy because I was like 30-1 with biplane). At the highest levels, miranda seems to be the best plane (certainly the most popular), probably because of its very flexible movement patterns, as well as explodet because its mines and rockets make it a great defensive area controller.

The only plane that doesn't have a well-defined and valued role in both BALL and TBD (the two main game modes; BALL is currently the biggest and most active but TBD is older and considered by most veteran players to be better) is biplane, the other four are all competitive in League play with at least one red perk. The only perks you really want to stay away from because they will mark you as a newbie are Tracker for Loopy, Bombs for Bomber, Rubber Hull for Green Perk, and Reverse Thrust for Blue Perk.

It's a good idea to practice all the planes, both so you have a better idea of what you are up against, and because being able to play multiple planes well will let you adapt to your team's plane composition. A team's composition is a huge factor at higher levels. For example, in a League game on any map, a team's composition will probably look something like this: TBD-Remote Explodet, Flak Bomber, Laser Miranda, bomb runner (usually Time Anchor Miranda but can be Trickster Miranda or Double-Fire Loopy) and a fifth plane based on the map; BALL-Thermobarics Explodet, Flak Bomber, Double-Fire Loopy, Time Anchor or Trickster Miranda, plus two more (probably another Thermo and Double-Fire). You'll see variations depending on team or map but that's the basic balance of heavy to light planes that's been found to work.

There are guides written by (mostly) very good players on the forums here: http://altitudegame.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17

I'll probably throw up another server in a bit, and hopefully fix the map rotation (I think the config on Pony Pasture right now is just using like all official maps). If need be and we get enough interest I can throw a password on those servers as well, but for now I'll just leave them open.

(And I'll probably be playing later tonight, according to altbouncer my vapor ID is: 1d6c0373-c83a-4a2b-9da0-55a096172922 )

I did not buy the game yet because I am playing alone and just wanted to get a feeling for it ..
Played 23 hours (got lvl 60 and now 21 again) so far but 22 of those are on a football server without obstacles and I have no idea about the real game, tactics or basic things like how the hell do I kill a miranda with my loopy.

Well, what I actually wanted to ask was if there are any europeans playing. I may get my headset back today or tomorrow, so I cannot use TS or ventrilo right now but I would be interested if anyone wants to play with me.

I read the OP and added Pholon (as he said) and lets see what is going to happen

Edit : And I saw `Drone some days ago.
And I added [TL] to my name. Maybe that will help my skill !

And after reading the rules for playing on ladder ...
Do I just join the server and that is it ? Not register anywhere e.t.c. ? Do they use teamspeak on ladder or could I start today.
Also, what am I allowed to choose.
10) Playing random, full or custom.
That pretty much covers all ... what am I allowed to play ?

And yes, I have to play tracker ... although on the public server everyone seems to play tracker so I am not the only one who gets angry words all the time
Where is my ACE flair

Have been playing since beta too, and I recently started wondering - why is there no TL clan/group in this game yet? There seems to be a lot of people on TL that plays it, but noone has taken the step to organize people like we see in other online games like Maplestory, Minecraft, GW, EVE, LoL, Dota ect. What do people think of making an official TL/Liquid clan and doing some real teamplay?
Go try StarBow on the Arcade. TL thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=440661

Well, in beta and early release two of the most prominent clans were TL based afaik, FLB and Ace. Some of those guys are still around. As far as organising something goes.. let's just add one another and try to get together for games. The more people you know the easier it is to start up teams to play in.
