Hey everyone.
So I'm at a "therapeutic working community" which is a ranch in Vermont that serves a semi-rehab, semi-mental health placement type place, but it's not really geared towards either. It's mostly just a place where recovering users (like myself) and people with mental health issues come to work and live and get clean for a while.
It's pretty boring here but there are a lot of tools and opportunities to take up side projects, and one of the counselors here whittled a chess set, so I figured I'd try to make a starcraft-themed chess set. I don't have any experience whittling or much artistic ability, so this is probably an overly ambitious project, but we'll see.
I'm a protoss player and I like PvZ, so I'm going to make protoss white and zerg black. I'm trying to assign the units such that they roughly correspond to strategic roles in the game. I'm interested in getting some feedback on deciding what to make the pieces. I'm pretty settled on some of the choices, like making special units the royalty, but I'll indicate below where I'm having trouble deciding.
If it goes well and I start making progress I'll definitely post pictures.
WHITE - PROTOSS:
King - Tassadar (big high templar, basically; HT as the king is a pretty appropriate PvZ dynamic) "Queen" - Zeratul Rook - Archon? Reaver? Bishop - Corsair Knight - Dragoon Pawn - Zealot
BLACK - ZERG
King - Overmind? a cerebrate? overmind is kind of a mess of a unit, but a cerebrate would just look like...a tongue, or something. Queen - Kerrigan obvi Rook - Lurker or ultralisk? Bishop - Mutalisk (nicely corresponds with corsair) Knight - Hydralisk Pawn - Zergling
Let me know what you guys think about the unit choices and your suggestions. Thanks.

For the Protoss queen, I might suggest the Dark Templar Matriarch Raszagal. But again, totally up to you

Exactly, The idea of zeratul being a queen..is a bit weird. The only female protoss unit in game is the shuttle right? or was that robotic(the portrait looks like a frog)?
Hmm..if the queen is raszagal, and the opposing queen is kerrigan, is it possible for kerrigan to mind control raszagal if they are close enough :p

I would go with
King - Tassadar Queen - Raszagal Rook - Archon Bishop - Corsair Knight - Dragoon Pawn - Zealot
King - Duran although he doesn't really fit in with the other zerg units (if you want to do a cerebrate try doing the Zasz portrait) Queen - Kerrigan Rook - Ultralisk Bishop - Mutalisk Knight - Hydralisk Pawn - Zergling

Make it the lurker rather than the ultralisk. Also, the Zerg king can be a defiler or an overlord. Or, ironically, a queen.

I havent played SC2 yet, so no plot spoilers please, but does raszagal really kick ass? The queen is the unit that kicks the most ass. I have to think zeratul fits that role for Protoss. Who cares if it isnt female.

^^ That bit I posted was from brood war, not sc2 :D, she's an npc in bw, so we dont really know if she could kick ass.

Err no spoiler, Raszagal is not in SC2 yet, she was in SC:BW, though.

I think the King should be Aldaris or something. He's still an important figure but he doesn't even fight, perfect for the king. Whereas Tassadar was an ass-kicking superhero. Tassadar for Queen perhaps.
Rook, I'm feeling Lurker because they both have a long-ranged linear attack, (although Rook has to stop after one kill) And the rook can control tight space well (1 square wide but a whole column), similar to the lurker.
EDIT: For Protoss, I feel Bishops should be high templar, both are religious figures. Similarly, bishops can only attack diagonally on one color, which is similar to the High Templar's specific role in fights. (since it is a spellcaster)
Knights definitely have to be Dragoons just because they both have herp derp pathing. Not to mention a real Dragoon is a horse mounted fighter anyways.

Brood War? Tassadar is dead in Brood War

Yeah but in Wings of Liberty, you find out he's actually still alive :O
Which would technically make him alive in Brood War.

He's telling the truth! But am I lying about his lying about him lying?!

Well, in french rook are called 'fou' which could be translated by 'crazy'. And for me, the craziest unit in protoss are templars! :D Zerg's rook would be an unborrowed lurker. All pawns shall be workers! Stop lying all of you ! Btw, Kerrigan is a dude. (sorry)

Uh how long are you in rehab that you're whittling an entire chess set? Also are you using wood, clay, marble, what? Some materials can't be formed into intricate shapes like SC units. Also this might take a very, very, very long time.
How about trying to do one figurine first of your favorite unit. That seems like a more reasonable starting point for this project especially if you've never tried it before.
