Hey everyone.
So I'm at a "therapeutic working community" which is a ranch in Vermont that serves a semi-rehab, semi-mental health placement type place, but it's not really geared towards either. It's mostly just a place where recovering users (like myself) and people with mental health issues come to work and live and get clean for a while.
It's pretty boring here but there are a lot of tools and opportunities to take up side projects, and one of the counselors here whittled a chess set, so I figured I'd try to make a starcraft-themed chess set. I don't have any experience whittling or much artistic ability, so this is probably an overly ambitious project, but we'll see.
I'm a protoss player and I like PvZ, so I'm going to make protoss white and zerg black. I'm trying to assign the units such that they roughly correspond to strategic roles in the game. I'm interested in getting some feedback on deciding what to make the pieces. I'm pretty settled on some of the choices, like making special units the royalty, but I'll indicate below where I'm having trouble deciding.
If it goes well and I start making progress I'll definitely post pictures.
WHITE - PROTOSS:
King - Tassadar (big high templar, basically; HT as the king is a pretty appropriate PvZ dynamic) "Queen" - Zeratul Rook - Archon? Reaver? Bishop - Corsair Knight - Dragoon Pawn - Zealot
BLACK - ZERG
King - Overmind? a cerebrate? overmind is kind of a mess of a unit, but a cerebrate would just look like...a tongue, or something. Queen - Kerrigan obvi Rook - Lurker or ultralisk? Bishop - Mutalisk (nicely corresponds with corsair) Knight - Hydralisk Pawn - Zergling
Let me know what you guys think about the unit choices and your suggestions. Thanks.

For the Protoss queen, I might suggest the Dark Templar Matriarch Raszagal. But again, totally up to you

Exactly, The idea of zeratul being a queen..is a bit weird. The only female protoss unit in game is the shuttle right? or was that robotic(the portrait looks like a frog)?
Hmm..if the queen is raszagal, and the opposing queen is kerrigan, is it possible for kerrigan to mind control raszagal if they are close enough :p
|
I would go with
King - Tassadar Queen - Raszagal Rook - Archon Bishop - Corsair Knight - Dragoon Pawn - Zealot
King - Duran although he doesn't really fit in with the other zerg units (if you want to do a cerebrate try doing the Zasz portrait) Queen - Kerrigan Rook - Ultralisk Bishop - Mutalisk Knight - Hydralisk Pawn - Zergling
|
Make it the lurker rather than the ultralisk. Also, the Zerg king can be a defiler or an overlord. Or, ironically, a queen.

I havent played SC2 yet, so no plot spoilers please, but does raszagal really kick ass? The queen is the unit that kicks the most ass. I have to think zeratul fits that role for Protoss. Who cares if it isnt female.
|
^^ That bit I posted was from brood war, not sc2 :D, she's an npc in bw, so we dont really know if she could kick ass.

Err no spoiler, Raszagal is not in SC2 yet, she was in SC:BW, though.

I think the King should be Aldaris or something. He's still an important figure but he doesn't even fight, perfect for the king. Whereas Tassadar was an ass-kicking superhero. Tassadar for Queen perhaps.
Rook, I'm feeling Lurker because they both have a long-ranged linear attack, (although Rook has to stop after one kill) And the rook can control tight space well (1 square wide but a whole column), similar to the lurker.
EDIT: For Protoss, I feel Bishops should be high templar, both are religious figures. Similarly, bishops can only attack diagonally on one color, which is similar to the High Templar's specific role in fights. (since it is a spellcaster)
Knights definitely have to be Dragoons just because they both have herp derp pathing. Not to mention a real Dragoon is a horse mounted fighter anyways.

Brood War? Tassadar is dead in Brood War

Yeah but in Wings of Liberty, you find out he's actually still alive :O
Which would technically make him alive in Brood War.

He's telling the truth! But am I lying about his lying about him lying?!

Well, in french rook are called 'fou' which could be translated by 'crazy'. And for me, the craziest unit in protoss are templars! :D Zerg's rook would be an unborrowed lurker. All pawns shall be workers! Stop lying all of you ! Btw, Kerrigan is a dude. (sorry)
|
Uh how long are you in rehab that you're whittling an entire chess set? Also are you using wood, clay, marble, what? Some materials can't be formed into intricate shapes like SC units. Also this might take a very, very, very long time.
How about trying to do one figurine first of your favorite unit. That seems like a more reasonable starting point for this project especially if you've never tried it before.

marines as pawns

OT: I would make the kings tassadar and the overmind. Queens- Matriarch and Kerrigan Rooks- Carriers and ...ultralisks I suppose Bishops- DTs and Mutas Knights: Dragoons and hydras Pawns: Zealots and Lings!

Kerrigan is far too sexy to be a dude.

That's exactly the point ... It's a trap.

I would go like this king:tassadar (but I figure making units with distinctive characteristics would be hard, so if not arbitor) queen: rassagal (or carrier) bishop: corsair knight: dragoon rook: archon pawn: zealot
king: defiler queen: queen (duh) bishop: muta knight: hydra rook: ultra pawn: ling
This way you have a theme of pawn small unit, knight ground range unit (and the goon's movement resembles a knight), bishop is light air unit, rook is hulking mass of a ground unit, and king is the spell caster that isn't good on it's own.
That sounds very challenging to make detailed units small enough to be used as chess pieces, but with enough time and enough pieces of wood, it should be possible. GL, I'll be keeping an eye out for when you post pics of the finished products!

Overlord should be the king IMO. It really fits, slow and lumbering. Then when you can make a rule then when you castle your king or are going for the stalemate you have to say "BWARRRRRGGHGHGGH!" as you move your king. I think lurkers fit in with the role of the rook than an ultralisk. I don't know where you'd put it in, but it's a shame there's no defiler
|
make an extra set for me
|
Rook for Protoss should be a Reaver IMO. Lurker for Zerg.
|
My suggestions would be:
Protoss King = Tassadar (In the Gantrithor) Queen = Zeratul Bishop = High Templar Knight = Dragoon Rook = Reaver Pawn = Zealot
Zerg King = Overmind (Maybe the Eye Only) Queen = Kerrigan Bishop = Defiler Knight = Hydralisk Rook = Lurker Pawn = Zergling
|
Zeratul as Bishop i think would be best, the cross board snipers if you dont have detection you will get owned, Maybe make knight to corsair and leave out the goon, but i would imagine the goon would be a bad ass looking chess piece.
|
When I think of rooks when I play chess I always think of Tanks. Terran would be cool too. Marines = Pawn Vulture = Knight Bishop = Science Vessel Rooks = Tanks Battleship = Queen Raynor = King Those would be alot harder because with those pieces two of them would be floating.

Some thoughts on the matter...
Protoss Bishop: Dragoon
Dragoons oftentimes move, and shoot, diagonally. With range upgrade they can hold space well. They remain mobile, but often times are blocked by other units or insufficient micro and AI mishaps.
Protoss Knight: Shuttle
Thinking of reaver drops and DT drops here.
The knight is most reminiscent of an air unit. It can fly over obstacles and drop down to kill units in a wide, sometimes unpredictable area.
Protoss Pawns: Pylons
I know the Zealot is probably your first choice here, but this just came to me. Pawns litter the chessboard, but form an important structure especially in the late game. Pylons, similarly, form an imporant backbone to the successful Protoss army.
The only significant issue I can see with this is that Pylons themselves don't actually have the ability to attack and kill enemy units.
Zerg Rook: Lurker
Rooks are often used for long-range column and file space control. Lurkers perform a similar space control mechanic.
Zerg Knight: Mutalisk
Same thinking as before in terms of the knight being an air unit. Think of the two knights on the field as two impeccably microed Mutalisk stacks attacking in two places at the same time. You are now Jaedong.
As a side note, have you considered the answer to the question as to which pieces shall be Black and which pieces shall be White?

Rooks should defiantly be lurkers.
|
Protoss King = Carrier (Tassadar/Gantrithor) Queen = Zeratul Bishop = High Templar Knight = Dragoon Rook = Reaver w/ Shuttle Pawn = Zealot
Zerg King = Overmind (the Eyeball thingie from the Overmind portrait) Queen = Kerrigan Bishop = Defiler Knight = Hydralisk Rook = Lurker Pawn = Zergling
Bishops are religious figures and HT serve that purpose for Protoss. Defilers are the Zerg counterpart to HT (even if they dont' serve a religious purpose in Zerg lore). Rook should be lurker 'cause they attack in a line; shuttle/reaver cause those buggers are quite mobile like the rook. Dragoon as knight since dragoons are basically zealots riding a robot; hydra as knight is fitting as counter to dragoon. Pawns are self-explanatory. Queen should be a unit that kicks ass so Kerrigan and Zeratul are the natural choices; I don't like Matriarch as Queen cause she was a sissy that didn't do anything but get herself mind-controlled and owned. King for Protoss should be Gantrithor to distinguish Tassadar from the HTs. For Zerg Overmind's the obvious choice; I think the Eye thing in the Overmind portrait would work quite well.

Wow, ambitious project, I'd say it'll be a lot of fun, do post progress

I don't have any suggestions, but look forward to the posting of the pictures of it. This is a nice creative idea you have here.

bump I would like to know how is this going. And if the op is still trying to make one. So we can make moar suggestions!!
Regards.

I'd do Terran/Zerg
Terran King = Battlecruiser Queen = Thor Bishop = Goliath Knight = Vulture Rook = Siege Tank Pawn = Marine
Zerg King = Ultralisk Queen = Queen Bishop = Defiler/Infestor Knight = Hydralisk Rook = Mutalisk Pawn = Zergling
|
If you did Terran/Zerg, what if the queen for Terran was Kerrigan, and the queen for Zerg was Infested Kerrigan? A bit anachronous, I suppose, hehe.

He said it was a BW chess set.

This would be awesome, but I also on top of it, it may take a long time, try making a black and white set for each race maybe? Each player could have choice of what race they would prefer to be? Just a suggestion. If you were to get a terran set, these are my suggestions.
King- James Raynor (Obviously xD) Queen- Nova or Sarah Kerrigan (not sure if that would make sense, having Sarah invested and non-invested) Rook- Thor or Siege Tank Bishop- Wraith Knight- Vulture or Goliath Pawn- Marine
-Thanks LemoN
Edit: I realised that those units may not be in BW lol, my bad but i'll leave them in because I never played BW and those are good ideas I think :3
|
You should make the two bishops different. Since the black and white bishops can never take each other, one should be air-to-air and the other should be ground-to-ground. Maybe a pair of scourge and the ultralisk for zerg and a corsair and dark templar for protoss?

I see the reasoning behind marines, zealots, and zerglings being pawns, However I also see the logic in the workers being the pawns, especially since drones "transform into other buildings" much as pawns transform into other pieces. As well as the fact that the workers build numerous structures making them both the most readily inexpensive unit but ultimately the most important in certain regards . Just a thought P.S I very much would like to see a picture of your set after completion, love the concept

I don't like this idea as much as you may have a nice point about the pawn trading thing.
Pawns are supposed to represent rank and file soldiers in chess. key word being soldier.
If you're going to make a Starcraft themed chess set. Marines, Zerglings and Zealots are the only way to go.
